I purchased this book because I wanted to learn more about using C# for scripting in Unity. However, in the very first chapter the author makes an egregious error. Explaining how to define a class, he declares several member variables and member methods as private. So far not a problem. Then he declares an object of the class and accesses the private members with a dot operation. You absolutely can not do this. It is why you make the members private to begin with is to make this type of behavior impossible. I normally do not write reviews, but I felt I needed to write this to warn absolute beginners that you will be led astray from chapter 1. I am going to complete the book and possibly update this review. However, just be warned the the author either does not know what he is doing or he had a terrible technical editor.

Numerous typos along with a couple of missing steps makes it hard to follow. The file you download for the examples is going to be from an older version of Unity, which will give you some issues in regards to older code. You can still use it, but be aware your console log will be showing it all the time.It would have been nice if it also showed C# along with Javascript. Translating it is not that difficult though.Issues with Kindle version on images in where you can't really see it (no way to enlarge). Environment Ambient Lighting has been renamed in newer versions, and the Bake option is now a tab.

I found this to be a good quick read to learn some of the basics of the Unity API/UI, and how to use the scripting API to accomplish many different basic tasks.I did see that other reviews mentioned an issues with the first chapter discussing C#, which I unfortunately skipped, though I agree throughout the book there seems to be a misunderstanding of member access levels (and naming conventions). There are other various practices in Unity I did question, like duplicating initialized objects, lack of prefabs/interfaces, or dynamically finding GameObjects instead of assigning via public members, but this may be from the author trying not to go to deep too quick. Either way, these are all very minor criticisms which can be overlooked and remedied with some minor doc research, it doesn't take away from the overall mission of the book.If you are learning game development with C#, you are going to learn many different coding styles over your career, and it will be up to you and your understanding to pick the best practice. As long as you make sure to make it a habit to visit the API documentation (which the author even mentions), you will learn proficiently. For the money, it's not a bad purchase, especially since it's not an extremely UI-heavy book like many others.

This series of books has step by step instructions that are easy to follow. There are lots of pictures to verify you are doing things correctly. I have done three books in this series so far (Foundations, Beginner, and Platform). Before starting the books, I had some coding background, but no experience with Unity. Each book covers a manageable amount of information. There is so much to learn, but the author does well to stick to key points to not make the reader feel overwhelmed.

I'm an adjunct instructor for several institutions where I teach adults how to design and develop software using various IDEs and languages. As a former military officer, I've come to appreciate the idea of ensuring my troops have all the training and gear they'll need to get the job done. Patrick exemplifies that spirit in his series, "From Zero to Proficiency." After reading his first two books in the series, I've decided that I'll use them in the Fall term to teach my students game development with Unity. The lessons are easy to follow, yet provide powerful impact upon game development. I've never come across any other author who continues to provide weekly support to his readers and Patrick Felicia does. He even solicits us to learn what we'd like for him to teach next. If you want to learn Unity from someone who actually knows how to teach it, I recommend his books. I read a lot of technical books, so I seriously appreciate it when an author can clearly convey knowledge in an easy-going manner that is technically correct. I'm very happy with these books and am sure my students will be too.

I learned allot from his tutorials. But it is not polished. So expect to wrestle through some of the lessons. His Web site can be frustrating. For example, i registered there and it said it would send me am email with a direct link to download the source files. No link is included in his email and you are forced to contact him to get the link and password.

I would recommend for people who want to study unity generally, to take a quick basic programming course before starting with this book because i am not sure if this book was easy for me because i have a basic knowledge about programming, or it's just easy.One thing is for sure, it makes things way easier.There are many websites for free online basic courses like Codeacademy and Sololearn which give free basic introduction tutorial for JavaScript and more.Since i am familiar with programming, i didn't need to start focusing on how programming works (which is explained in this book) but only on how programming with unity work.Highly recommended book nonetheless.

Thirty Days in Quito, by Kris Loomis, is a breezy, easy-to-read, lighthearted, journal-style memoir of a couple and their cat moving from the US to Ecuador.I had fun discovering Quito with Kris and comparing and contrasting lifestyle differences between South America and the United States. This is a great read if you are considering a move to a completely different land, or even if you're planning a lengthy visit somewhere new and different. I think you could take Kris's lessons and advice and warnings and apply them in similar situations.This memoir will have you laughing and sympathizing at the same time. Based on Kris's vivid accounts, if you go to Ecuador, be sure to experience a heladeria and Old Town, but beware of Frankenstein showers and marinated cuy!

This book is a short, sweet, easy read. Reads more like a blog than a novel and since it's only 150 pages I literally finished it in an hour. It feels not quite up to par with other travel books I've been reading lately, but I still enjoyed the story. I'm planning on moving to South America myself and I really enjoyed the author's point of view and the little day by day tales of their move abroad.

I love travelogues. My wife and I have both spent time abroad and therefore I was looking forward to receiving my print copy of Thirty Days In Quito. I was not disappointed. This is an interesting, funny read that gets you invested in the people they meet and the places they go.Kris Loomis writes in a conversational style and takes you along on the journey as she and her husband adjust to life in Ecuador. From their one bedroom, fully furnished apartment (only, not so much), they set out on buses to explore Quito. Anyone who has spent time in countries that are 'basics only' can relate to spotty phone service, makeshift plumbing, and the absolute luxury that is hot water. The small victories such as ground coffee (testify, sister), an oven, or a helpful local can feel like major, major victories when you are living on manana time. The people of Ecuador come across as friendly and gracious. You feel as though they become your friends as well reading, and I think I need to resume my Spanish lessons so we can take a visit!I can't wait for the next book in what I hope is a series from the author, as I need to see how Triplet adjusted to Cuenca!

When someone has many interests it is difficult to become master of one. Ms Loomis talks about chess, yoga, music and origami, but writing is not a craft mastered. I had to put the book down a mere three days into Thirty Days in Quito. Having lived abroad myself (or even if you haven't) I wanted descriptors of the people, of the culture, of the sounds and smells. Ms Loomis describes her best friend by having short hair and an A-line skirt - not a lot to envision. A joke comparing the local market name to American feminine hygiene products falls flat. Challenges are overcome on the very same page. And every other sentence ends with ! Instead of spending any days in Quito, go spend "A Week at the Airport" with Alain de Botton or any Italian getaway by Frances Mayes.

Clearly a self-published, poorly written book. Mildly entertaining.

I loved this book!! I don't know if I will ever go to Ecuador but thanks to Kris, I feel like I have a taste of what it would be like. I really enjoyed reading about the adventures of Kris, Hugh, and Triplet. All told with a great sense of humour. A very enjoyable read!

Thirty Days in Quito offers a chance to experience the transition to a developing country with honesty and humor. I greatly enjoyed the style of writing and honesty about the experience. I have considered a move to Ecuador in the past and this book greatly helped me to better understand the challenges and rewards. Ecuador is a country which will give some culture shock, and this book allows the reader to better understand what is to be expected and assist in the adjustment. Nice read completed in a couple of hours on an ebook.

Lots of humorous stories that we, too, have lived in our travels in Central and South America. Actually, their experiences were somewhat mild but completely believable. Their plumbing stories really ring true!

After everything, I have to say I was disappointed with this book. I did enjoy the story, overall. But, based on the book blurb, I had much higher expectations. For fans of Libba Bray's The Diviners, this is far from that level.My biggest problem: I felt like I was thrown into the middle of a series and the world-building was just skipped.The whole book is built around a society divided between hemopaths and regs (regulars). Hemopaths have afflicted blood that gives them artistic gifts - wordsmiths, songsmiths, thespians, artists, etc. And for some reason this affliction gives them a serious aversion to iron, and apparently several other metals to a lesser degree? The reader gets a lot of information about what wordsmiths and songsmiths (and other talents) can do, but there is absolutely no link between these gifts and the blood affliction or iron aversion. The reader is told the "affliction" manifests during teenage years, that it is very painful, and then you have a gift and a metal aversion, but that's all you get. There is no other information about why the blood disorder causes the metal aversion or how the gifts are linked. It was almost like the author had an idea about characters with a blood issue and it segregating them from society, and an idea about cool magical talents, and just decided to use both. There was not enough world building to relate these things together. When I read the book blurb, I had envisioned hemopathy being something magic in the blood of these people and the controversy behind it was going to be trying to obtain and use hemopath blood. Almost like a Prohibition dealing with magic blood instead of alcohol? And the reference to an infamous gangster made me think there was going to be a lot more about gangsters... But actually it's nothing like that.The reader is told that scientists don't know a lot about hemopathy, there's an asylum where they are doing all kinds of secret experiments to "cure" hemopaths, but you get no information as to whether this is a worldwide new disorder, or where hemopathy came from, or how it manifests. The two sides of hemopathy just don't link together well.Furthermore, I got the impression there would be more gangster and Prohibition/speakeasy action, but actually this book is set before the beginning of Prohibition, which was a big disappointment to me. The clubs were kind of underground clubs, and there were raids, but the raids were about performing illegal hemopath shows, not about serving illegal booze. It was like the author liked the era, the clothes, and the idea of the secretive clubs, but didn't feel like bothering with the rest of the 1920s. And the club that was the focus of the book was the Cast Iron Club - having read the book I'm not really sure why the title is Iron Cast.The story is not bad, I just kept waiting for information and world-building that never came. I had been excited about this book for months, and it just didn't deliver.

Iron Cast is set in an alternate 1919 version of Boston, where a subset of society have an affliction called hemopathy, which allows them to create illusions via different art forms.The premise of Iron Cast is intriguing, but the book doesn't provide enough world building to really expand on hemopathy. We see Corinne create illusions for people - she can make them think they see a building burning or that their hat has turned into a rabbit - while Ada manipulates people's emotions through music. There's some background on hemopathy as a blood condition, how it manifests, and its side effects, but very little else. The historical setting also feels very vague, and it often felt as though Soria set the novel in 1919 merely because it was right before Prohibition. There are some callouts to the late 1910s, but not enough to really feel like a firm setting. The novel could have been set in the modern era and not much would have changed. I appreciate a good historical fantasy novel, but if you're looking for a lot about the time period, you won't find that here.Soria provides a wonderful female friendship between Ada and Corinne, though Corinne is incredibly grating. There's been a trend in YA fiction for the past decade of having a sarcastic, feisty female character and this is apparently meant to be funny and refreshing, but often comes off as rude and mean. Corinne is definitely rude and mean. Most of her interactions have her judging someone before they even do anything, and being oblivious to the plight of others. I spent most of the book wondering why Ada was even friends with her. Ada, on the other hand, is well-balanced between worry and collectedness, though her characterization seems less nuanced than Corinne's. All the other characters are fairly one-note, to the detriment of the story. They're there for the ride and as supporting players, but aren't fleshed out enough that you grow to care for them.Despite the intriguing premise, the plot itself can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a fantasy adventure or a gangster prohibition caper. The plot starts off as primarily about hemopathy and the capture, imprisonment, and torture of hemopaths and then veers wildly into a story about prohibition where hemopathy is almost an afterthought. The last third of the novel feels very rushed, almost to the point that I wonder if Soria had to meet her deadline and just pushed everything out at once. Almost all of the "twists" and betrayals are expected, and having so many of these twists and betrayals happen in the last third of the novel was exhausting.Overall, Iron Cast had potential, but too much world building, character development, and plot development fell by the wayside. It's an okay read if you have a few hours, and while the aspect of hemopathy is memorable, not much else is, which is unfortunate.

The friendship between Ada and Corinne is really the key relationship between two people in this book. I wouldn't say we really see it evolve, but it's the core relationship that helps Ada and Corinne individually navigate the changes in Boston and in the Cast Iron. They're so very different (different ethics and talents and desires), but they're there for each other, always wanting to be on each other's side and by each other's side.They also both have important familial relationships, and those do have arcs. I like where Ada's goes (her mother, Nyah, is amazing), but I love Corinne's family arc. It fits so strongly with what Corinne is learning personally in this book.I appreciated how little of world history was changed here because of hemopathy. Ada's point of view, in particular, brings up a lot about race and histories of slavery and colonialism. A lesser book might have minimized racism because of the large amounts of anti-hemopathy in the story here, but Iron Cast doesn't.There was one thing about when the HPA came into existence that I thought caused a continuity error?One instance of "just a friend."

That was the first-hand, sensitively wrought narrative of a man surviving 76 days at sea alone in a life raft. This story, as the unimaginative title suggests, is about the longest documented survival of someone adrift at sea. That someone happened to be a wily but illiterate fisherman from Mexico, whose tale is reconstructed retrospectively by a journalist. There is a tangible loss to time and translation. The author tries hard to paint a sympathetic portrait of the survivor, Salvador Alvarenga. But the elephant in the life boat is that he didn’t start his journey alone. Somewhere along the way, his young, inexperienced mate Ezequiel perished.I vividly recall the day in 2014 Alvarenga appeared on television to the world, looking surprisingly well-nourished. It is explained in detail here how he was able to sustain himself, but the obvious spectre of cannibalism is never directly confronted nor convincingly dismissed. In fact, the author goes out of his way to repeatedly stress that Alvarenga would eat anything to survive. Aside from this lingering morbidity, I was disturbed by how respect for the mate’s memory was sacrificed at the expense making Alvarenga seem heroic. He is sometimes portrayed as a cowardly burden for his captain to bear, rather than a terrified, unlucky kid. In a phrase of breathtaking callousness, Alvarenga is said to discover “the benefits of solo travel” after the death of his mate. His story is never fully developed, and will be forever unknown.There are some randomly inserted commentaries by survival experts to pad the story. It ends with Alvarenga motivated by his experience to try to redeem himself for being a deadbeat dad. Despite the reconstruction, this is still an amazing story. But to have some firsthand insight into the soul of a man lost at sea, you can’t beat Adrift.

This is the story of Salvadore Alvarenga who survived 438 days at sea, in which he drifted 6,000 miles over the Pacific Ocean. Overall I rated this book four and a half stars out of five. This was a truly amazing story, it is a one of a kind story. The kind you will only hear once in your lifetime. It is one of those stories that you have trouble believing that it's true. I really liked how this book included relevant information/facts and opinions coming from specialists, in that they backed up as well as enriched Salvadore Alvarenga's remarkable survival at sea. I am in awe of Salvadore, in his humility and his optimism, in how he never gave up. Just close your eyes for a moment, and imagine that you are stranded at sea. What would you do? I encourage any reader with a hint of curiousity about the story to read this book! It was intriguing to understand not only how he did it but how the experience changed him. Truly fascinating.

On November 17, 2012 Salvador Alvarenga and an inexperienced assistant Ezequiel Cordoba set out on a twenty-five-foot fishing boat from a small Mexican village. 438 days (and approximately 6,000 miles) later… Salvador washed up… alone… a “Wild Man”… “ashore on Tile Islet, a small island that is part of the larger atoll. Ebon is the southern tip of the 1,156 islands that make up the Republic of the Marshall Islands and one of the most remote spots on earth.”I remember seeing on TV the news a few days later reporting *ever-so-briefly* the “claim” that Alvarenga was lost at sea for fourteen months. The reports on two different stations were extremely short… and they hinted that this had to be a hoax. The image of the “supposed” historic survivor… with crazy hair and unkempt beard… and what looked like a generous belly… was never brought to my attention again…UNTIL… this UNEQUIVOCALLY… mesmerizing… hypnotic… empathy… inducing book. The author does an unbelievable job… start to finish. Jonathon Franklin first indoctrinates the reader… as to not only what type of individual Alvarenga was throughout his life… which included fleeing El Salvador… in fear of his life… after a brutal bar room brawl… but explains the entire life style of the Mexican village Alvarenga subsequently lived and worked in. There are no punches pulled in describing the day after day of drinking and drugs… followed by day after day of life threatening fishing for among other things sharks. The awful weather conditions that the area was famous for… and as if to prove the reputation was well earned… such a massive storm… is what started this whole fourteen-month odyssey.The impression the author makes on the reader… regarding the rough physical labor imbedded in these fishing trips… even before the small boat is taken out to parts of the ocean so dreaded and desolate… that even astronauts viewing it from space while orbiting the earth… make statements as to its… gloomy… dismal… isolation… is excruciating. As an example… in that tiny boat they carry “2-mile-long line studded with up to seven hundred hooks and hope the tuna, mahimahi, marlin and sharks are biting. Sharks are their preferred catch.” Two men alone bait the hooks… throw out the line… pull in the fish… by hand!After the boat is taken deep out to sea… with the motor non-operational… no paddles… no anchor (which would be worthless anyway)… a phone that no longer is usable… and weather that ranged from pouring storms… to day after day of unbearable heat… that literally bubbled the skin. The men’s faith and knowledge were tested minute to minute. They would run out of drinking water… run out of food… and soon only Salvador would remain. The reader is literally dragged into the hell on earth… that is… the tiny boat Salvador is in… you start feeling his hunger… his thirst… his success at times in catching with his bare hands… turtles… sharks… and then birds. The nauseating repulsion of what he has to eat… when he is “blessed” with the opportunity to… is palpitating. Covering himself with a cooler (ice) box that was meant to store the fish they went out to catch on the original trip… is used to protect him from the merciless sun… and to protect him from the cold at night. It’s claustrophobic to the reader… so imagine what it was to him.What takes this book to an even higher level… are the interspersed *expert* educational verification to facts that any doubter as to the time and space… and physical… AND… emotional… toll and situations… that were actually faced… might bring up. The author takes the offensive… in making sure… that anyone even off-handedly attempting to cast stones as to any of this being a fraud… are shot down… before they can even get any proverbial guns out of their holster. There are quotes from psychologists… biologists… ship captains… even astronauts. The author has truly done his homework.This awe-inspiring book doesn’t end when Salvador makes it to shore… think how you would be mentally and physically if you went not only fourteen months without being able to move twenty-five feet… fearing every moment for your life… starving and dying of thirst… but if you did not have the ability to talk to even one human being for a year? So… it wasn’t only muscles that atrophied so bad… that Salvador could barely walk ten feet… but his personality… and cognitive skills had almost totally deteriorated. The author professionally and humanly covers that also.This book will obviously be made into a movie one day… but with all the reading I’ve done over the years… I have never found a movie as good as a good book. There is no way on the Lord’s green earth… that a movie will be able to capture this entire story the way the author has.

About the Author

Winner of the 2016 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American PoetsSHARON OLDS was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University and Columbia University. The winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and England’s T. S. Eliot Prize for her 2012 collection, Stag’s Leap, she is the author of ten previous books of poetry and the winner of many other awards and honors, including the Wallace Stevens Award, the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award for her first book, Satan Says (1980), and the National Book Critics Circle Award for her second, The Dead and the Living, which was also the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1983. The Father was short-listed for the T. S. Eliot Prize, and The Unswept Room was a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Olds teaches in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at New York University and helped to found the NYU outreach programs, among them the writing workshop for residents of Goldwater Hospital on Roosevelt Island, and for the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. She lives in New York City.

I love Sharon Olds. This book has less of a narrative theme than her other books of poetry. It praises, in her incomparable way, the everyday items that make up our lives. You might think writing about menstruation or birth control would be boring or even distasteful, but Olds is always minutely descriptive and shockingly enthusiastic. Even when some of these poems seem less polished, there are so many original odes that you will find much to admire here. And it is on the verge of daring--like so much of her poetry.

Totally over the top poet. She includes the most personal details (!).

Very clever poet with great sense of humor ...a real "women's" poet!!

I can't really describe how much I love the way that Sharon Olds writes her odes but this book is worth buying.

Sharon Olds is awesome as usual.

I have loved many Sharon Olds poems for decades. However, this collection feels a little too heady and lacks the appeal and power that have appealed to me over the years.
