Review

"This book is an absolute must for anyone who wants to understand how Love Makes Sense. Sue Johnson covers all the new science, and she has led the scientific field in helping us all understand love and how to repair an ailing relationship. The book is a real page-turner, an easy read that will enlighten all of us who want to build a lasting and secure bond filled with romance and passion. We need no longer wander around in the darkness, stumbling from one disastrous relationship to another. Read this book and learn how to create a life that is a safe haven for love." --John M. Gottman, PhD, author of What Makes Love Last?"A life-changing book! Dr. Johnson elucidates the science of love, convincingly demonstrating the underlying emotional logic of relationships. In an entertaining way, she gives us practical, down-to-earth examples and exercises to help us develop our 'love sense.' It will enrich the lives of all who read it." --Richard Lannon, MD, coauthor of A General Theory of Love"You won't find a better book combining wonderful insight, practical wisdom, and the latest science of relationships. Plus the passion of a psychologist intent on making the world safe for the kind of intimacy we all long for." --William J. Doherty, PhD, author of Take Back Your Marriage"Sue Johnson, the developer of Emotion Focused Couple Therapy, has written a powerful book on the science of securely bonded marriages. Dr. Johnson's very human and inspiring approach to relationships will keep the reader mesmerized." --Barry McCarthy, PhD, author of Rekindling Desire"Sue Johnson sees no contradiction in viewing love as biology and poetry, physiology and romance. For her, love is the hard won endowment of our evolutionary history and a source of hope a world of uncertainty and danger. With this book, Sue reveals that love is scientifically understandable. She emerges not only as a world authority on love's repair, but also on its underlying, neural, physiological and psychological structure."--James Coan, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Virginia Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Virginia."In Love Sense, Dr. Sue Johnson creates fascinating and enlightening connections between cutting-edge research, professional applications of research in marital therapy, and scores of apt case examples and engaging exercises for people who struggle with relationship difficulties. Besides being an excellent researcher, theorist, and clinician, Johnson has a unique gift for inspiring and motivating other therapists and nonprofessional readers. With genuine enthusiasm and admirable clarity, she shows how emotion-focused therapy, guided by attachment theory and research, can heal troubled relationships while benefiting society more generally. This is a wonderful, uplifting, energizing book."--Phillip R. Shaver, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, University of California, Davis; Past President, International Association for Relationship Research

I started with reading her first book "Hold Me Tight." Absolutely loved it! Then I went on to this book, loved it again. The way she frames couple interactions as attachment bonds completely opened up my mind and heart to understand love and how we get stuck in patterns that veil and close the door or love. Reading through the various examples of couple breakthroughs using EFT helped me realize that we have alternate choices in communication besides the usual criticize-attack mode or the withdraw go-cold mode that we all too often get caught up in when relationships get stressed. This cuts down to the core of relationships issues and distress, and gives awesome tools for "changing the dance" as she likes to say. I'm reading her book for therapists now, "The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy," because I find this information so valuable and transformative. I also highly recommend it to my colleagues, patients, and anyone suffering from relationship distress, or just wants to better understand this unique and special human bond at a deeper level.

Sue Johnson has a gift for presenting science with such delight and joy that it's like opening an extra special birthday present that the giver is as excited about as the receiver. In Love Sense, Sue opens up the science of love for all of us. She begins by pointing out that our first instinct is to seek contact and comforting connection rather than sex or aggression. This idea opens up a whole new arena for understanding behavior and interactions. The idea that we must stand alone and strive for independence falls away for the idea that what we all really need is closeness and comfort. We worry that if we are "too soft" that we will raise self centered people but, in fact, we are mostly driven to be empathic rather than competitive. Sue reveals the science of her ideas in much the same way that Richard Feynman reveals physics - with joy and engagement. Sue discusses emotion, the brain, sex, monogamy. She addresses many issues couples struggle with over a lifetime of partnership such as making a commitment, parenthood, coping with the empty nest, retirement. Along this journey, Sue explains the common cycles couples get into and the emotion that is underneath those cycles that drives them. She uses examples from her work with couples to demonstrate what happens in these dynamics and how attachment styles and needs affect each person. She slows down the dynamics and digs deep into the emotion and attachment needs to expose what reassurance or support is needed to circumvent the cycle. In chapter nine Sue tells a love story and describes a betrayal between a couple, the opening up, understanding what was happening between them that created the environment for this fracture to happen and then the repair. This will be a wonderful piece for our clients to read to begin to understand the opening that needs to happen when people have hurt each other. Sue moves on to expose many of the challenges we have in our ability to be present with those we love. Throughout this book, the conversational style Sue has, her deep understanding of her subject and her passion for this topic are palpable. This book will be a best seller and I believe that it will create the revolution Sue talks about. We will begin to find each other, open up to each other, expose our vulnerability, understand our emotions and heal our interpersonal fractures. Thank you Sue for caring enough to bring forward these important messages. This is a lovely, mesmerizing book.

Sue Johnson's perspective on relationship dynamics is core to our current scientific understanding of love. She writes well and persuasively makes her point that the need for bonding comes from deep instinctual roots, and when our bond with our beloved is threatened we respond typically with either a fight or flight response. This is probably the most useful book I can recommend to my clients to help them understand the basic dynamics of loving relationships. This, and Dr. Johnson's previous book, - Seven Conversations - which is extremely helpful for couples who are working through distress. These two books are essential reading to anyone who wants to understand how love works and what often makes it go sour. Still, both these books can be difficult for the layperson to follow in places; and somewhat frustrating for the practitioner/scientist who wants really clear links to the research base she claims to depend on for her many assertions. The book has a set of references for each chapter, but these are unfortunately for the entire chapter and are difficult to link with the many individual assertions she makes in each chapter. Thus it is unfortunately extremely difficult to follow how her "research-based" arguments and conclusions are really linked to research. This is particularly vexing in her chapter which asserts monogamy is essential to human bonding, which is a controversial issue.Attachment Theory does not, of course, explain the whole mystery of love - as if anything really can. Readers who are looking for the "single silver bullet" to understanding their relationships and resolving relationship differences will be disappointed, although Johnson's work goes a long way toward this understanding. A convergence of contemporary theories on relationship goes further to this end. For example Harville Hendrix's work on Imago theory (based on Jung's Imago theory) is still essential to understanding how opposites attract (but you have to sort of subtract some of the rigid psychosexual developmental theory of Freud that Hendrix's work also hinges upon). Also, the work by John and Julie Gottman on what is needed to "Build a relationship house" is extremely helpful for couples who often lack a sense of basic direction and basic relationship skills - but of course the Gottmans' work is really a collection of useful observations rather than a cohesive theory about relationship and bonding. Sue John's work, and John Bowlby's work before her, prove a clear theoretical foundation for understanding relationships. You might think Sue Johnson's writings on attachment theory as providing the FOUNDATION upon which the work of Hendricks and the Gottman's can stand. Without the foundational understanding of attachment theory provided by Johnson the edifices built by Hendrix and the Gottmans can not stand firm.

Quite the eye opening scientific study of why we are who we are and what we can do about it. I have already recommended the book to friends and family members in order for them to see themselves through this view of how the mind develops though the actions of those we care about the most. The creation on attachment styles through the actions of others is a phenomenon that awakes our realization of why we act the way we do under certain conditions. If this was required reading in every K-12 curriculum, it would do the world a huge favor.Read it and pass it along!

Rotten Pumpkin

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-4–Schwartz meticulously tracks the life cycle of a pumpkin/jack-o'-lantern as it decays and eventually gives birth to new pumpkins. The gross-out factor is high, as each of the rodents, insects, molds, fungi, etc., do their respective jobs. For example, the fly states: “You're gonna love hearing how I eat. I vomit on the pumpkin flesh. My vomit dissolves pumpkin nutrients so I can lap them up.” Fifteen different organisms describe their role in the eventual demise of this jack-o'-lantern. The photography is sharp and clear, and effectively ramps up the “eww” element. A few concerns might be the occasional use of the vernacular, as in the aforementioned “gonna,” and some younger children could be upset about the fate of their carefully carved pumpkins. Jack's plaintive voice is heard now and then: “Where once I smiled and winked, now fungi ring my mouth and eyes. A cheerful jack I am no more.” Schwartz includes some suggestions for classroom investigations, and they would be a wonderful vehicle for scientific explorations. Those wishing for a gentler look at this process might go to Wendy Pfeffer's A Log's Life (S & S, 1997).–Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJα(c) Copyright 2013. "Grossly interesting!! Schwartz takes us on another fascinating journey in science."— Penny Glackman, Excellence in Science Teaching Award Winner"An enlightening tale of nature's recycling process. It's amazing how much life a rotting pumpkin supports—and how many children will be delighted and disgusted!"— Vicki Cobb, author of more than 80 science books for kids“A quick and icky guide to decomposition and the organisms that actually do the "dirty" work. This is a simple, fun, yet informative book that would be handy in any science classroom! The photos are absolutely beautiful!"— Mrs. Readerpants, review"Rotten Pumpkin is not for the faint of heart and I suspect that kids will love it! It has lots of colorful photographs showing the different types of animals that feed on the pumpkin as well as the various molds that can appear as the pumpkin begins to disintegrate. In addition to the photos, there are detailed (yet easy-to-understand) descriptions of how the molds grow and how the pumpkin eventually turns into a new green shoot!Rotten Pumpkin really is an educational look at decomposition and I think teachers might appreciate this book. I can certainly see how valuable it would be in explaining some science concepts and there is even a glossary in the back of the book along with some ideas for classroom investigations.I can't think of another book quite like Rotten Pumpkin, but I do appreciate the subject matter and how it's presented. I can pretty much guarantee that this picture book will keep the kids' interest!"— Booking MamaKirkus Reviews Starred Review:Carving a pumpkin for Halloween is a beloved tradition, but all too soon, that gourd falls prey to a host of scary, gross and unbelievably fascinating creatures.Leave it to Schwartz and Kuhn (What in the Wild: Mysteries of Nature Concealed and Revealed, 2010) to combine their considerable talents again to create a page-turning title on decomposition. The author boldly chooses to give voice to the various decomposers that visit old Jack. Readers hear from animals, mold, fungi, rot, bacteria and, periodically, from the pumpkin itself. The photographs zoom in for close-ups of the characters in this slightly horrific performance. Fuzzy Penicillium, slime mold and spore cases “that look like tiny red balloons” all gruesomely impress. Readers learn more than just how slugs, flies, worms and sow bugs feast on the former jack-o’-lantern. Time and weather play their parts, too. One seed waits as “the animals came, the molds grew, the pumpkin collapsed into a heap of goo….” When the spring rains come, it begins “pushing roots downward and stem upward. If all goes well, my flowers will form fruit.” A glossary follows, further describing the unfamiliar terms introduced in the text, and a page devoted to “Classroom Investigations” suggests ways to engage in the scientific method and conduct experiments with pumpkins. An ecology lesson, an inspiration for readers’ theater—or a compelling read all on its own. (Nonfiction. 5-12)— Kirkus Reviews Starred ReviewWhat’s scarier than a grinning jack-o’-lantern? How about what happens to it after Halloween? . . . The inventive concept combines a Halloween theme with science that readers can easily replicate—if they have the stomach for it. Ages 4–12. — Publishers WeeklyFrom the opening disclaimer of “No animals, molds, or fungi were harmed in the making of this book, but some pumpkins got pretty mushy,” the tone is set for a decompositional journey so fun, kids won’t realize they are being educated about consumer-resource systems!. . . Never did I think I would read a book containing the word “plasmodium” and have such a blast! Librarians and teachers, know this: the yucky images will have the kids yelling “gross” while they rapidly devour the book and have you grinning like a jack-o’-lantern because you slipped in an ecological food chain lesson! Highly and rottenly recommended for ages 8 to 11.— Becky Walton, MLIS, Collection Development, Ingram Library Services: News and Reviews“This is the perfect book to introduce an ecosystem that is self contained, or to explain how nature is dependent on various life forms.. . This is a quick recycling story that kids will love because it is so icky! Children will be disgusted and grossed out and read it again and again.”— Jennifer Szoch, Reviewer“Icky Gross Fun! As a school librarian, I have learned that gross out factor can have great appeal for a book and this one does not disappoint. . .This book was wonderfully informative and excellently grotesque at the same time. Then at the back it even includes a glossary and classroom investigation suggestions that you can try. 5/5 stars.”— Melissa Williams, school librarian“ I loved the photos and the idea of telling the story through the viewpoints of different decomposers. This is a topic our third graders study and I can just imagine my boys loving the "gross" photos. I can see a teacher easily using this with a group of students in a variety of ways. They could create a KWL chart about what happens to a pumpkin after Halloween. The end of the book suggests science experiments students can work on themselves using pumpkins. This text offers new vocabulary and provides the right amount of picture support to illustrate the concepts. The book includes a glossary for additional vocabulary support. Thanks for sharing this book with me.”— Gale Lewis, elementary school teacher“Our 7th grade science standards include understanding decomposers, and this is the simplest, most beautifully visual book on this topic I've ever seen."— Monique German, middle school teacher"A gorgeous, colorful picture book perfect for elementary or middle school science classes, especially post-Halloween. The photos are absolutely beautiful!"— Leigh Collazo, school librarian“Wow! Loved how David Schwartz made rotting pumpkin flesh informative bad fun. Kids will love the Ick factor. Teachers will appreciate the opportunity for science investigation and discussion. Well-done!”— Susan Thacker-Gwaltney, Educator"A dynamic mix of story and nonfiction, this book follows the life of a pumpkin. He has his shining moment as a jack-o-lantern lit for Halloween, but then is put into the compost. That is where the story gets interesting. First he is chewed on by mice, squirrels, slugs and vomited on by flies. Now he looks a lot different and has fungi growing. The various molds introduce themselves, explaining what they do, including the fascinating Penicillium. Sow bugs, earthworms, slime mold and yeast work on the pumpkin too. It is left as just a pile of seeds and little else. Until spring arrives!Schwartz shows readers just how fascinating science is with his in-depth descriptions of the decomposition process. Children will adore the explanation of how flies taste and eat, the process of earthworm poop, and all of the molds seen up close. But this book goes far beyond the gross and takes the reader right through the entire process, detailing it with interesting moments throughout. The photographs by Kuhn are particularly useful in a book like this. Capturing the changing face of the pumpkin as it molds over adds real interest visually to the title. At the same time, the close up images of yeasts and slime mold are grossly gripping.Perfect for autumn and Halloween, this book will have kids looking at their slumping pumpkins with new eyes. Appropriate for ages 6-9."— Waking Brain Cells ReviewYou’ve got to love a book that grosses you out as much as this one does. . . Award-winning author David Schwartz matches his nerdy science know-how with his keen sense of humor to create this very educational and entertaining book, while science and nature photographer, Dwight Kuhn works magic on the spectacular close-up images. . . What a brilliant and inventive idea for a book!— SmartBooksforSmartKids reviews"I bought Rotten Pumpkin - gave it to one of the librarians and haven't seen it since. Have a feeling it is the best science book for kids to come out in quite a while."— Kathleen West, retired elementary school principal"Who says the scariest Halloween books for kids are strictly fictional? With Rotten Pumpkin you’ve all the thrills of a typical horror story, laden with facts along the way. The hero at the top of his game. The downfall. The insidious, frankly disgusting, forces that eat away at him until he’s nothing left but a blackened husk of his former self. Oh, it’s thrilling stuff. With applications in the classroom, in the home, and on the stage, there’s nowhere this rotting corpse of a pumpkin doesn’t belong. So this holiday season don’t bother handing the kids yet another copy of Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark when they beg you for child-friendly horror fare. Just load them down with a little Rotten Pumpkin. Guaranteed to make hypochondriacs out of even the stiffest souls."— Fuse #8 Review, School Library JournalEach photo in the book is simply amazing. A great title for those interested in the processes of decomposition/composting and food chains.— Review, One Book, Two Books, Old Books, New BooksThis is a perfect example of how the Common Core State Standards open up reading and learning. It is not just about reading and experimenting. Skills are developed when a child shares what s/he learns with others through speaking and writing themselves. And these are just the literacy skills. The demise of the pumpkin is an opportunity for kids to learn how other living things use it for sustenance . . .Kids have strong feelings about Halloween. A teachable moment takes advantage of strong emotions to lead a child into real learning. It is something every great teacher recognizes and relishes, dropping whatever else is going on at that time to produce some profound learning. Rotten Pumpkin is a real-life look at the natural processes of degradation and decay that transforms the initial feelings of disgust and abhorrence into fascination and intrigue. --Huffington PostKuhn’s astonishing, intimate photography brings the reader deep into the realm of decomposers. Schwartz’ text gives voice and clarity to a non-fiction book that in turn reads like a funny, gross and exciting tale. A concise glossary and a page of classroom investigations are included, teaching the scientific method and suggesting experiments. This one’s a winner.-- Parenting on the PeninsulaBrilliant photos accompany this fascinating, well-written, concise journey through the different phases of a rotting pumpkin. Author Schwartz’s approach is super-friendly and the book is written much more like a story than a science book.--Greatest Books for Kids"A shining example of what we can hope to expect from other offerings supportive of the new Common Core standards."-- ACL 2013 Distinguished Book (Association of the Children's Librarians of Northern California"UnCommon Core at its best!"--Carol Simon Levin, librarian and blogger"Of all the strange things growing on this pumpkin, I am the strangest. I am a slime mold. I started as a single cell, tumbling through the soil. Every once in a while I divided in half so there were two of 'me.' Soon there were lots and lots of us. Then we did the oddest thing: we joined to become one living creature that spread out in squiggly yellow arms like a net." — from the book

I wish I had found this book last year for our study of soils and decomposers! I really enjoyed reading it myself - David Schwartz has such an engaging way of presenting information! Last year's 2nd and 3rd graders would have "gotten" the message. I'm planning to use it as a read-aloud with this year's class.

My daughter LOVES this book. We are now hunting for various molds every time we walk in the woods. She knows it by heart. When I went to her class to read it, she ripped it out of my hands and took over reading. We checked it out of the library once, then had to buy our own copy.

David Schwartz is great at making the real life decay of a pumpkin into a compelling and interesting tale, to help kids (and possibly grown ups) understand how things decay. I love his photography!

K-3 classes were appropriately grossed out by this book. I did skip a few of the pages about mold.

This book was a great addition to my Pumpkin Science unit where we were studying decaying pumpkins!! Very gross pictures. The kids loved it!!

My kids check out this book every year from the library. It's one of their favorites. It reads well, it's full of information, and it has a gross out factor.

The book has so much real scientific content and language. 4th graders loved the details. Even 1st graders were into the great photos. It's the life cycle of a pumpkin stretched out to the nth degree!

This is an excellent book that explains the life and decay cycle. The kids like the 'gross' aspects and it uses biology and ecology to explain the carbon cycle of decay. Very good for all ages.

I'm going to sum up this book as succinctly as possible:I'm a professional bartender that has remodeled his kitchen to be as much a chemistry lab as it is a place of cooking. I have a HUGE library dedicated to bartending books... in addition to cooking, gastro, flavor-profiling, pairing, etc. I love the food and beverage industry, and I believe that a bartender is as responsible for creating an enjoyable meal as a chef. My personality is front-of-house while my mentality and drive (and sometimes my personality, too) is back-of-house.This book is perfect for people like me that are always on the look-out for ways to bring new techniques to their libations, not to mention a thorough explanation for why things work they way they do... which is wonderful for inspiration. However, this book is also perfect for someone that simply wants to know how to make the magic happen at home.1) Dave Arnold is a genius. Certifiably, not hyperbole. It takes a unique and gifted soul to bring this level of thoughtfulness to his trade, and a generous spirit to pass along just enough of that information to make someone incredibly dangerous if they're on a first-name basis with their welding shop (like me: former iron-worker). What he has to say about everything is worth paying attention to... especially the giant chapter on ice. It's funny to say it, but embracing 25 pages on solid water has made me a much better bartender than the hundred of other pages detailing elevated techniques.2) Outside of understanding how ice and dilution actually work to make or break a cocktail, there is very little in this book that pertains to bringing an extra bit of flair and wonder to your bar. Tossing bottles is for kids that work at TGI Fridays. Real flair is about making the creation of something that's liquid unforgettable look effortless. This book is all about preparation. The first part is education. The second part is experimentation. The third part is learning how to set everything up in advance so that the actual mixing, building and shaking is as smooth and consistent as possible.3) This book will force you to be a better bartender. I don't care if you're a professional or home-based booze-hound: this book will force you to elevate your knowledge and ability just from the kind of humble enthusiasm Arnold communicates for the bartending trade. Not only am I a better, more educated bartender capable of applying the various techniques and technologies discussed in Liquid Intelligence to the recipes bound within it, I've also gained the confidence to seek out my own individuality using these lessons.I have a ten-pound bottle of liquid nitrogen in my kitchen, now... and I'm sourcing a carbonator. And then there's the red-hot poker I know just enough about electrical engineering and fabrication to injure myself perfecting.4) This book has made such an impact on me that I've begun carrying my own tools to my job. I refuse to use pint glasses for shaking cocktails, I refuse to use their muddlers, I refuse to use their strainers. Just like when I worked on steel fifteen years ago, I pack in my own tools every day I go to work, and when I take over a new bar in three months, all of the bartenders that work for me will do the same.Chefs pack their knives.Carpenters pack their saws.Real bartenders pack their shakers, clarify their juices, and analyze every bottle with a Brix meter to make sure each cocktail they craft is consistently delicious.THAT'S how good Liquid Intelligence is.

Shortly after I finished reading my first alcohol book (The Drunken Botanist), I found myself desperately searching for something that could measure up to it and could teach me the things I needed to know.  Upon receiving many recommendations for Liquid Intelligence, I decided to purchase it for Kindle, since I couldn't wait for it to be shipped.  About halfway through I vowed never again to buy a cocktail book (or any reference book) without being able to hold it in my hands.  I did not abandon the book, but in electronic form it was of little use to me in my average references.  Recently while discussing books with a regular, she mentioned that she had purchased a cocktail book that proved to be wildly over her head and far more than she had ever needed... I immediately knew which one she was talking about and she was gracious enough to give me her copy.  I am a more fulfilled woman today, with this book in my hands. In every aspect of Liquid Intelligence, Dave Arnold's character is clear.  He is a scientist who puts on the garb of bartender.  He is a perfectionist in an artists game.  In my mind, there is a range of cocktail artists... on one end you have the artist, someone who pours until the cocktail is 'right', someone who makes a different cocktail every time.  On the other end of the spectrum is the scientist, people like Dave Arnold who practice that the 'right' cocktail is the perfectly balanced one, a blend that can be found through practice and repetition.  People like this create as much consistency as can every be had in the cocktail industry.  On both ends of the spectrum boundaries are pushed in ways the average person could never anticipate.Liquid Intelligence begins you with over 30 pages on measurements, units and equipment.  He then has 25 pages on Ice.  Part 3: New Techniques and Ideas involves things like nitro-muddling, pokers, iSi Whipper, and fat washing.  This is not a beginners cocktail book.  This is not a home-bar cocktail book.  This book is by a professional, for professionals.  While Dave Arnold's writing style is extremely accessible and he does not delve into too much scary molecular science, if read as a beginner or an average home enthusiast, one of two things will happen: 1. you will fall in love with it and but entirely too many things you don't need and constantly be asking for more than the average bar can supply or 2.  you will think cocktail making is some inaccessible science, bordering on wizardry and that you could never hope to be a part of it.  I fall into the first category and freely declare myself to be an impractical person when it comes to the things I want for my bar.  My friend falls into the second category and while I am glad that it led this book to me, I am also saddened by the fact that she felt she was unable to continue on a cocktail journey.  Her husband is a chef and she is a bookworm with a great deal of spirit... there is no reason she cannot explore complex cocktails at home and I have no alternative but to believe that it is this book that deterred her.I am not driven the way Dave Arnold is. His focus and consistency are not my style, but I still found this book incredibly interesting.  It also was extremely helpful for establishing 'Best Practices' in my opinion.  There are many people out there who will be happy to tell you that shaken is better or stirred is better but Dave Arnold took the time to break it down to what is actually happening in the glass.  For those things that we can do at our limited bars, it is best to do them as well as is possible.  Many of the small things I do throughout the day are with his advice in mind, such as icing a drink after all ingredients have been added or slapping mint instead of tearing it.  This book is also jam-packed with pictures for reference.  Arnold ensures that every explanation is as thorough as if you were sitting in a classroom.  He explains why he does everything, which is incredibly helpful for the bartender who is looking to bring a new elevation to their cocktails.Overall, I love this book.  I dream enthusiastically about the day I get to go to Booker & Dax and less enthusiastically about the morning afterwards.  If you are thoroughly entrenched in the alcohol business, either as a home enthusiast or as a bartender/mixologist I recommend it with passion.  If you are not thoroughly entrenched, if you are still hesitant when walking down the liquor isle or nervous when going on shift... maybe wait a while.  Read some other books first, talk to some other bartenders and do your own research.  This is an experience that is best done at the right time, not the closest time.
