Muhammad Ali: The King of the Ring (Campfire Graphic Novels)

Review

"The graphic format is an ideal way to present the life of a real life 'superhero' who went from being a diligent young boxer to achieve immortality through his undoubted sporting prowess and powers as a communicator who challenged the status quo following being stripped of his title for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War.  His life straddles a period of major social change in America which culminated only recently in the [election] of the first black president.  Campfire is an impressive imprint and watching boys in particular devour the[ir books] reminds me of my own childhood love of Classics Illustrated.  Intelligently written from the perspective of sports journalists , recounting  [Ali's] exploits inside and outside the ring with really dynamic illustrations, it shows that graphic novels are not just for reluctant readers although book averse boys in particular will find it hard not to pick this up." —School Librarian Magazine"Campfire manages to capture children’s attention in stories that talk up, rather than down, to their readers." — John Hogan, Graphicnovelreporter.com"I highly recommend Campfire’s comics. They do what they are intended to do and do it in  a way that excites kids about classic literature."— Chris Wilson, The Graphic Classroom (a resource for teachers and librarians)

Lately I have read numerous graphic novels and this one (Muhammad Ali: the king of the ring written by Lewis Helfand and illustrated by Lalit Kumar Sharma) is one of the best graphic novels I have read the last few months. I am always on the lookout for books on great people and anything to do with combat sports like boxing. The writer and illustrator really did a fantastic job of telling the story of one of the greatest boxers in history, Muhammad Ali.This 92 page volume begins when a young Cassius Clay back in Louisville, Kentucky got his bicycle stolen. He approached an officer to report the incident and the officer also taught boxing in a gym. This began his introduction to what has been called “the sweet science.” Even though many trainers at that time did not think young Cassius had much of a future in boxing; nevertheless, he had a work ethic and determination that would never give up. He trained longer and harder than any other boxer in the gym. After winning numerous amateur matches he went on the win a Gold Medal for boxing at the Olympics. After that Cassius Clay began his pro-boxing career. This book not only goes into his boxing career but also covers his personal life and his adoption of the Black Muslim religion when he changed his name to Muhammad Ali.If you are seeking a concise and fully illustrated biography of a great American and worth heavy weight champion of the world, you should check out this excellent graphic novel.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

It's not only that Ali's life is vibrant and full of exciting material, but it's also that Lewis Helfand and Lalit Kumar Sharma, script writer and illustrator, respectively, have done a magnificent job in presenting the life of Ali matching the same vibrancy and excitement that characterized his life. This comprehensive story includes his childhood, his early training as a boxer, winning the gold medal in the 1960 Olympics, his struggle with racism, his ascendency toward professional boxing champ, his controversial decision to become a member of the Nation of Islam, his refusal to go to Viet Nam, his comeback, all his exciting fights with Liston, Norton, and Foreman, and the years after his retirement. Helfand also does a nice job in including the race issue and the Nation of Islam decision while still focusing on Ali the boxer. This is not an ordinary graphic text just showing a string of events. The narrative is communicated with poignancy; there is feeling to the story of Ali as it is managed by Helfand. The illustrator doesn't stay behind. I particularly liked the different headlines incorporated into the story on a few occasions, condensing important information in one panel. The text also stresses on the positive, Ali's contributions not only to boxing, but also out of the realm of boxing. Even though I belong to the period when Ali was at the peak of his career, I certainly learned a lot of new things about his life during every one of its crucial and poignant moments. This graphic biography certainly deserves a 5 thumbs up.

Great book learned a few things about this guy would by more from Campfire books.

you cant go wrong by buying this Ali novel. Was looking for this at the local comic store was not in found it on the net.

My favorite sport to watch is boxing. Muhammad Ali is a icon to all generation. You should purchase this book if you love boxing. I also wrote a graphic novel about boxing titled The Ring King. Ali is one of the greatest boxers in sports history.

Native American History for Kids: With 21 Activities (For Kids series), by Karen Bush Gibson

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-8-In an attractive format containing eight chapters, the text of this comprehensive look at Native tribes covers origin theories, Southwestern tribes, East Coast tribes, participation in Anglo wars, the Plains Indians, the destruction of the Native American cultures, and the resurgence of tribal rights and cultural pride. Each chapter contains a lucid summation of the topic under consideration, augmented with black-and-white illustrations and a craft or project tied into the subject matter. For example, "Fighting the White Man's Wars" discusses the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the war history of the nations of the Southeast. Sidebars cover the origin of scalping, Native American slavery, and brief biographies of notable individuals. The project for this chapter gives step-by-step instructions for constructing a model trading post. The background and instructions for all projects are admirably clear and well laid out for either students working alone or for class projects. This title is particularly well suited for classroom use. It is an excellent introduction to a vast and often ignored history.-Ann Welton, Helen B. From Booklist

Although it is part of the For Kids series, this gripping, highly readable overview will draw teens and even some adults into the history of Native Americans, from early times and the arrival of European settlers up to the present. The examples of racism are horrifying, including the early-twentieth-century Supreme Court ruling that Christian people had to govern “an ignorant and dependent race. Also horrifying are the accounts of forced assimilation, including the cruel boarding schools for American Indian children. Throughout, Gibson spotlights important individuals, from Geronimo and Sitting Bull to World War II heroes, athletes, the founders of American Indian Movement (AIM), writers, and political leaders. And she details American Indians continuing, contemporary struggle for cultural preservation and civil rights. Accompanying the historical chapters are challenging activities, such as “Decipher a WWII Navaho military code” and “Write a journal entry as a student in an Indian boarding school.” The lack of documentation for direct quotes is unfortunate, but a glossary, bibliography, and annotated lists of up-to-date Web sites are included in this useful resource. Bought this for my grandson. It is important that we don't lose the history about our country and the first American's. Having activities included in the book also helps make this book even more special

This book includes some solid details that would be useful for upper elementary and maybe middle grades. It's pretty wordy, so kids may get bored of the reading, but it's great for teaching and the projects are interesting.

My 9 year old is very interested in history and this is a great book to read together to learn about some Native American History.

Each of these books in the Harry Potter series is a 'cover to cover read', as soon as I can buy them. Each is a gift to world literature.

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences. The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*

My husband tried to surprise me with this order, but we share the amazon account ;)I WAS surprised though, because I didn’t realize it would be textbook size with all these amazing scenes drawn out. They’re AH-MAY-ZING drawings!! If you love Harry Potter, you will love these books. For some reason, hubs couldn’t find the first and second of the series (I did ;p) so he bought the third first, but we know the stories by heart so it doesn’t matter to me. I hope they put out all of them! It almost feels like how I felt waiting for the actual series to come out.
