I am in Debtors Anonymous (DA) and the program has helped me pay off 35K in mostly unsecured debt over the last year. I still have a long way to go, and this book will help me take my recovery to the next level. The author is a trained psychologist who has worked with people having a variety of money problems, compulsions, and addictions. She clearly makes the case that these money problems qualify as legitimate addictions in severe cases, classifies the unhealthy patterns (as defined by her practice and research, including both indulges and hoarders), reviews underlying causes, and provides guidance and links to resources for recovery. I also love that she clearly describes what a healthy relationship with money looks like. Since I've never seen anyone demonstrate a health relationship with money, it gives me a clearer picture of what to strive for. This has helped me realize that I still have a lot of work to do to be fully healthy with money. Many other "get out of debt" books provide obvious information about why credit cards and overspending are bad. I am already well aware of this reality, and I am pretty good with making financial choices if I'm acting rationally. This author provides a much deeper explanation of the problem and provides tools and resources for recovery, which is what people with addictive/compulsive behavior will benefit from. For anyone in DA, her terminology and approach is consistent with DA principles as well. I highly recommend this book.

I have always been rather smug, almost proud, of my "ability" for "creative bookkeeping", "obsessive generosity" , and other "flattering excuses" for my money situations. I have never defaulted, overdrawn, missed payments, or asked for money from others, however, now that I am retired, I need to appreciate the changing, more expensive world I live in. I need to revise my "sliding, slippery slope" relationship with my money, and learn compliance with the budget I create every month. Compliance is my weakness, as all my "flattering excuses" are still ready to pop-up in every decision I make. Call it the evil twin analogy, and yes, I am a Gemini, another "financial excuse".This book, Spent, was written for me, as I am actually tired of my own money handling methods. (I can't imagine I am saying this). The author is respectful, but frank, open, realistic. She lays out plans that even I think are workable, simple and straightforward, plans-to-goals, not her goals, but goals the reader admits it is time to set for oneself. Please, wish me luck and wisdom. I wish you inspiration. Happy New Year. to goals

This is one of the best self-help books I have ever read. It has allowed me to see my issues with spending and tracking my money and offers excellent guidance on how to stop overshopping. I cannot recommend it more highly. I ordered the book on Kindle and have also ordered a paperback copy that I can pick up and read when I need help. Thank you, Sally Palaian.

Big help with my addictive spending personality. I also buy lots of cheap little things, and never save up for bigger nicer items. This book is a huge help in understanding my habits and personality a lot better. Which is helping me change how I spend. Item arrived in mint condition, easy to read, good product.

This is the best book I've seen on the problems people have with the use of money. The author points out all the psychological issues associated with problem spending, overspending, or even of depriving yourself. You can learn more about yourself and why you spend the way you do as well as ways to solve the problems. As is true with most problems, awareness is always the first step. So, if you think you don't have a problem and yet you don't know where your money goes or you spend to feel good or to achieve status, or deprive yourself of the pleasure of spending your own money, think again. It's not about judging yourself as bad but about empowering yourself to change your behavior, gain self knowledge and find meaning in your life. This is a welcome perspective on a pervasive problem.

I never even thought of myself as a compulsive buyer until I actually sat down and reviewed my debt and budget. I was out of control, and wanted to get out of the rut of living pay check to paycheck. I finally realized it was time to save. This book helped me identify reasons as to why I shop so much and gives great advice on how to beat this addiction ...bc that is exactly what it is...an addiction. This book taught me the strategies I needed to get ahead and start planning for a debt free future. Highly recommended to anyone who finds they are in debt bc of spending habits.

This is a very insightful book. The author truly understands spending disorders, I have related, identified my spending problems and look forward to reading on to learn the solutions. An optional free workbook is available at hazleden.com and is used beginning in chapter 4 I think

This is a wonderful book detailing psychological issues involving money and how to deal with them. Out of all of the financial books that I have read, this has been the most insightful and helpful. I have stopped stressing so much over money. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Anna-Marie McLemore’s When the Moon Was Ours is one of the most stunning novels I’ve ever read. It’s a short novel, but I found myself pausing every few pages because McLemore’s writing was so beautiful, I needed a moment to truly appreciate it. Taking inspiration from the folklore of La Llorona, McLemore weaves a tale about a boy and girl trying to discover who they are in a world that doesn’t quite understand them. Miel’s past is a mystery, from the moment she emerged from the water tower, her past has been locked up deep inside her. Most people aren’t sure what to make of her and the roses that grow from her wrist, but she’s always found a companion in Sam, a transgender boy who’s always felt like an outsider himself. Sam is trying to understand his own gender identity while also trying to appease those around him. Though it was hard to read when people tried to take advantage of Sam and “expose” him, it was an honest display of how many believe they have more of a right to determine someone’s identity than the person themselves does. McLemore’s characters are a mix of vulnerability and strength; her story is both dark and whimsical; and her words are moving and breathtaking. It’s novels like When the Moon Was Ours that make me love the genre of magical realism even more. If you haven’t picked up Anna-Marie McLemore’s novels yet, I strongly encourage you to do so.

This book has been on my TBR for quite a while now, and there's a reason for it. There are books out there that are so hyped and with concepts so painfully up my alley that utterly utterly let me down. Sometimes friends and writers and readers whose opinions I completely trust still love those books, and I have this almost visceral confusion over what I've missed or even what they missed. Was I too critical? Did I just not understand it? Why didn't I enjoy this book I hoped to love when so many people did?I've heard nothing but good things about this book, literally not a single negative review from anyone I know (as opposed to people down in the reviews below, I mean). Add in the fact that just the dedication alone had me tearing up, and I got almost terrified of reading this book and discovering I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. But y'all. This book. THIS FREAKING BOOK. I legitimately cried from about halfway through until the end of the book. I went through half a box of tissues in sheer 'oh my HEART' tears, and once I was finished with it, I sat on my bed just holding it closed to my chest for a good ten minutes in that book hangover paralysis. It was just stunning. I don't know what else to say besides that.

Content warnings: transphobia (challenged), incidents similar to self-harm, child abuseWhen I read a particularly beautiful or arresting passage of a book, I linger on it, letting the words roll around in my mouth to savor their texture and flavor. It doesn't happen with every book; when it does, it's usually not that often and only consists of a couple of sentences. To my shock and utter delight, though, When the Moon Was Ours was filled almost entirely with these kinds of passages, consisting of whole chapters that made me slow down and marvel at their otherworldly beauty. This is the story of Miel, a Latinx girl who washed out of a water tower one day and has roses growing out of her wrist, and Samir, a Pakistani boy who hangs the moon wherever he can. The whole town believes Miel is a fearsome witch because of her roses and her emergence from the water and the fact that she lives with a curandera named Aracely who cures the lovesick people of the town. The truly fearsome witches, however, may be the Bonner girls, las gringas bonitas, who beguile the boys and men of the town and take whatever they want for themselves...including Miel's roses.Anna-Marie McLemore's prose is shimmering and poetic, creating a dreamlike narrative that showcases the beauty and wistfulness of magical realism. Glass pumpkins grow out of the ground in jewel tones. Lovesickness takes physical form, flying out of a window once it's been wrenched from the body of a spurned lover. A mysterious woman emerges fully formed from a cloud of thousands of butterflies. McLemore's lyrical style breathes life into her delicate fairy tale, showing readers the possibility that lies within each of us to become who we are truly meant to be.The idea of becoming yourself and living your truth applies to all the characters in the book, but it would be an act of erasure on my part to pull focus from the story of Samir, the transgender boy who hangs the moon. For the most part, Samir's friends and family give him the time and space he needs to understand his true feelings and true self, and we get the privilege of seeing him work through the complicated thoughts and emotions that come with being a trans teen.I'm cisgender, so please take my opinions here with every grain of salt in existence, but Samir's depiction feels insightful and authentic to me. His characterization is empathetic and lovingly crafted — in the acknowledgments and the author's note, McLemore states that her relationship with her husband, who is trans, inspired much of the story. She also says that he helped her a great deal in writing Samir by answering questions about his experiences as a trans boy; that level of care and intimacy shines through in the book, which is one of the most touching coming out stories and one of the loveliest romances I've ever read. When the Moon Was Ours is a tale that will wrap you up and whisper to you, promising heartache and pain but assuring you that it will all be worth it in the end. It will tell you that who you are inside is who you really are; it will tell you that no one else has the right to decide what to do with your name or your body or your identity. It will tell you that magic exists, that hope exists, that possibility exists. And — especially for the brilliant, shining time that you spend lost in its pages — it will be right.

The Life of Mohammed: The Sira (A Taste of Islam), by Bill Warner

About the Author

Bill Warner holds a PhD in physics and math, NC State University, 1968. He has been a university professor, businessman, and applied physicist. He was a Member of the Technical Staff in solid-state physics at the Sarnoff Princeton Laboratories in the area of integrated circuit structures. During the energy crisis of the 80's he founded and ran a company that specialized in energy efficient homes. For eight years he was a professor at Tennessee State University in the Engineering School. Dr. Warner has had a life-long interest in religion and its effects on history. He has studied the source texts of the major religions for decades. Even before the destruction of the World Trade Center he had predicted the war between Islam and America. The day after 9/11 he decided to make the source texts of Islam available for the average person. Dr. Warner's training in scientific theory and mathematics shaped how he analyzed Islamic doctrine. The first step was realizing that the Islamic texts had been made deliberately difficult to read and comprehend. A program, the Trilogy Project (see below), was created to strip away the confusion in the texts. It became clear that Islam is not constructed on the same civilizational principles as the rest of the world. Simple statistical methods revealed that dualism and submission were the foundational principles of Islamic doctrine.

If you want to understand Islam, you must read and understand the life of Muhammad and the Koran. If you are a Muslim, the Koran is the Unaltered word of Allah as transmitted to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. If you are not a Muslim you should still know what the Sira and the Koran actually say. If you want to hold an informed opinion about Islam, terrorism, etc. knowing the Koran, Sira, and Hadith, is critical and the Center for Political Islam offers the easiest path to a solid understanding of Islam. The great thing about the Simplified Koran is that it has excerpts from the life of Muhammad, this Sira, so you know the context of what was going on in his life when he got these revelations, and every paragraph is referenced, so you can look it up online. The references are critical. You will find yourself with many WTF moments when reading. Going to Wiki Islam or other online sources may only compound your sense that the prophet was perhaps a crazy megalomaniac. Islam requires a certain cognitive dissidence where you have to hold as true multiple contradictory ideas. There are also just plain bizarre things that are not explained like the two giant transparent women in paradise.Know that most Muslims have a very sketchy understanding of Islam. Islam means submission and the only important thing is that Muslims all submit to Islam, and that we, non-Muslims, submit to Muslims.Islam is both the peaceful Islam of Mecca, and the violent Islam of Median. Islam is a series of tactics to gain supremacy over the world. 1) Be peaceful and gain acceptance and tolerance, 2) Gradually get concessions to Islam, bit by bit. 3) Take over 4) Eliminate the Heretics and Apostates. This is the program Muhammad followed first in Median and then later in Mecca. In this way Muhammad became the richest and most powerful man in the region, had 11 wives including 9 year old Aisha, while breaking every one of the 10 commandments.Know that Muhammad is the prophet of Allah, and the Ideal man, and you will be "The best of people". Rejecting this message makes you the "Worst of people", entitled to no rights under Islam. If you know little about Islam a good place to start is: InquiryIntoIslam (dot) comIf you really want to know about Islam read this Sira and read the Simplified Koran.

This book has done more for me to understand the controversy of Islam than anything else I've done. This is like a big elephant in the room that I think a lot of people have honest questions about but are afraid to ask. With all the things going on lately, I have felt more and more the need to understand. This book has answered my questions and shown me how to discuss this topic without feeling like I'm some sort of hate mongering bigot. I think all people who believe in the golden rule should read this book and do so now.

This very important but slender volume has more raw information packed into it than two full sized books. Author Bill Warner takes us through the life of the Prophet Mohammed in the words of the Holy books of Islam. I had only the most vague notion of any of the Islamic works besides the Koran. Now I feel much more confident in my thinking about Islam. Mohammed the person, Mohammed the leader, Mohammed the warrior all come into sharper focus. This book will be on my desk from not on. I will thumb through it often to find specific passages for referral. This little book has already helped me a lot.

In just over sixty pages, Bill Warner offers a summary of the life of Mohammed based on received Muslim sources. He explains that Islam has a scriptural "trilogy": the life or "Sira" of Mohammed (a continuous narrative), the "Hadith" or collected traditions (short anecdotes about Mohammed's deeds and reactions), and the Qur'an. Warner's _Life of Mohammed_ is thus a good starting point for understanding Islam because the "Sira" is the only part of the "trilogy" offered in chronological sequence. Warner's three versions of the Qur'an (_A Two-Hour Koran_, _An Abridged Koran_, and _A Simple Koran_) all seek to bring the chronology of the "Sira" to the Qur'an itself, a collection of Mohammed's pronouncements traditionally arranged purely by the length of the text.Warner's unique thesis, expressed in a final chapter of comments, is that Islam is primarily a political ideology rather than a religion. Warner supports this thesis by making a contrast between the few converts to Mohammed's peaceful preaching in Mecca and the coercive conversion of all of Arabia in the decade after Mohammed's turn to military tactics. Warner also underscores a repeated motif from Mohammed's life, the development of a dualistic ethical system, one requiring rectitude toward fellow Muslims but allowing many forms of deceit and violence toward non-Muslim "infidels".Compared to many critics of Islamic terrorism, Warner is restrained in his comments. Nonetheless, Warner's use of original Islamic sources raises troubling questions that cannot be brushed aside. Rather than speculating about the connection between present-day terrorists and the religion that they proclaim, this book shows the connection between religious violence and the words and deeds of the Prophet Mohammed himself.

This is one of the 3 parts of the sacred texts of Islam. The Quran is not sufficient to worship Allah exactly as Mohammed did, as required. Because the Quran is not written chronologically, one must read the Mecca (peaceful /tolerant) Versus Medina philosophy of Mohammed due to his situation. If you are trying to understand why differing groups of Muslims interpret the Quran & Islam's dictates so differently, this book will resolve the validity of the various beliefs about Islam by both Muslims & Non-Muslims. This with the author's analysis & explanation of the Quran & it's format will allow one to make fact-based judgements about the faith of Islam & the future of Islam's agenda in the Western World.
