I’ve been studying in this book for a couple months as of now. It is a wonderful tool when properly used. I was a guitarist that could play because I memorized all the patterns, and the locations of the tonic, 4th, and 5th in each key. I could not read proper notation. Now it is second nature for me to read music. Tablature is a thing of the past. I will say, it did not come easy, as it does require someone to truly study the book to get the full value out of it. Also, not everything is spoon fed to you. This book does require you to think for yourself in many cases. If you are disciplined in your studying this book, you cannot go wrong.

I used this when I transitioned from piano to guitar as a teenager under instruction from a Berklee graduate. Now I am using it again to teach my 14 year old son guitar in the same kind of transition. He was able to site read/play the first lessons immediately - first day - having never played guitar before. That is a tribute to how this book is structured - it is designed to teach you to read music and apply that to guitar - it is unmatched in that regard in my opinion. Many other options exist for learning techniques or theory or songs, but this is the best series for learning to read music with a guitar - and the foundations of site reading picked up here could be applied to any other instrument. That is very different than tablature based books and learning. There is a place for tablature of course - it makes life much easier and is more appropriate for stringed instruments in many circumstances - not just for popular music. That said, a foundation of knowing how to read and write music is demonstrated to have beneficial effects on spacial, mathematical, and creative development in multiple disciplines, even beyond music. This book is a great investment on that path - exceedingly easy to pick up from day one and progresses at the right pace from there.

In short this book requires work and long term commitment. It is not an overnight or a month long sojourn. This is because is lays a very solid foundation. I mention this simply because books are easy to purchase with good intent and motivation, but this one requires regular use and practice to yield its wealth. With commitment however, it will indeed make you a solid player in reading. I would also mention that it may or may not be appropriate for the novice. If youve never played , imho , you will need a teacher to help you. If youve been playing a bit , have basic technique and minimal background of knowing where some notes are, some chords, how to finger chords, etc, you may be able to use this on your own. This is THE book to use if you are serious and dedicated in deciding to learn to read music. I like because it is methodical in building the foundation of guitar and reading. Unfortunately for those of us that are impatient and busy, there is no quick and easy short cut. However, by using this method and practicing, you will, over your years of playing invest your practice time in something that will serve you the rest of your playing life, with no need to go-back, no gaps, no confusion.First, it starts with how to read notation, then the key of C, in first or open position, ie you need only remember where the notes are on a small portion of the fingerboard. The book presents effective exercises for reading notation, in different keys, and more importantly , imho, exercises in reading rhythm (always more difficult for me).I play a variety of music, including rock, and am proficient at reading tab. My continuing interest in jazz has prompted me to use this series, and the companion Melodic Rhythms for Guitar by the same author (worth its weight). In a way, this is something like sitting down with a dictionary or grammar primer, to learn music. It is satisfying and informative, and WILL ABSOLUTELY teach you to read music in many keys, knowing the scales and fret-board positioning, including closed positions.Like learning a language, you must work every day to become fluent. It is not entertaining, in the sense of including known pop or jazz tunes. This series of books are used at Berklee in Boston and are therefore, more academic and less 'quick and easy'. I would highly recommend all 3 volumes, and would tell the player to expect no less than a year to diligently work through them at about 30-60 minutes per day. The book also has some easily overlooked or easy to forget notes the review and to practice speed, which are very important. I highly recommend these books. As a note to interested readers, another tool I have found very useful for those wishing a faster track on reading and rhythm is another Berklee publication,a DVD, Accelerate your Guitar playing, by Tomo Fujitsu, which focuses more on technique and fingering but also has some excellent work on reading charts and rhythmic exercises. I have used this as well, and it is equally excellent, but focuses more , imho, on technique and speed, but is also important to the serious student.

Great book. Every aspect of the instrument is covered here. There isn't a great amount of text, there doesn't need to be. Play through the lessons and you'll have covered most nuances of playing. At first, the book seems a little simplistic. Don't let that fool you. It won't take long before you're challenged by the details. This book forces you to focus on the small things to polish your playing. Picking? Yes. Simply picking becomes important...I'm not a newbie. I've been playing for 25 years. And THAT is why this is good. It's forcing me to basically start over and focus on the stuff I should have perfected on day one. You know, the important stuff

My son's Guitar Teacher (she is also a music teacher) requires this, and teaches old school. Read the notes, sight reading, scales. So it is not just guitar, it is music in general.

I absolutely love this book. I've taught out of it for over a decade. It progresses much faster than other, more popular beginner books, and the emphasis on playing duets very early on can't be beat. I highly recommend this book for anyone learning or teaching guitar.

This is the method for the serious guitarist who wants to do it right. All the great players that have gone....and those that will be going to Berklee...have used and will use this method. If you're serious....get it....:~)

I studied with Bill Leavitt at Berklee in the 60's. I think this method book was written more for adults and people who play other instruments and want to learn guitar. None of the exercises, etudes and duets are derived from familiar or traditional songs ( no "Home on the Range" etc.). This method book has the student develop pure reading skills as they apply to guitar.
