Amazing book for the defense of Christ. Really helped solidify my faith back in the day, and would recommend to anyone, believer or skeptic or atheist. Great book to come back to for some apologetics learning.

Lee Strobel's "A Case for Christ" was highly instrumental in leading me to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior. Coming from a scientific background, I was also skeptical about this whole "religion thing". However, the methodical scientific approach and evidence he discovered in his search for the truth, convinced me it is far more logical to place my faith in Jesus than not. I can do nothing but highly recommend this book and the movie if you are searching for the truth about Jesus Christ.

Lee was an Atheist, and his wife, an Agnostic. What makes this book so interesting, even as a believer, is the fact that Lee, former legal editor for the Chicago Tribune, embarked on a 2 year investigation into the reality of Christ. Was Jesus who He said He was? Did He really exist in the flesh? Are the biblical accounts just made up? Were there eye witness testimonies to miracles that supposedly happened through Jesus? Can groups of people maintain eye witness accounts without those stories becoming totally altered after passing down through even the first 20 people let alone generations? The really great thing about Lee's "investigation" was that he set out to prove that his wife, who became a believer, and all the rest of us, were caught up in a huge scam. Experts in the fields where Lee's questions could be addressed were engaged in this quest. This book is not fiction! Also, the movie, if you see it, does a great job of summarizing the whole investigation, and you get to "meet" those who were called on to fully answer Lee's questions, and they are not actors.

It's hard to rate this book with only 5 stars. I was raised a Mormon. After leaving the cult due to the Mormon inconsistencies and contradictions I found myself in a state of limbo. I didn't know what to believe. I knew that a God existed but wasn't sure if it was the Christian God, the many many Hindu gods or maybe some deity that was unknown and impersonal. The Case for Christ was a critical look at Christianity from the perspective of an atheist. Lee Strobel left no stone unturned. He tackled the historicity of the person Jesus, the resurrection account, miricals and every objection to which I wanted answers.

Well written and logical. A must for anyone investigating the validity of the claims of the Gospel.

I am a christian. My parents were born again long before I was born. My father was immensely and I mean it, immensely transformed after receiving christ. We prayed three times a day, and I was a firm beleiver in Christ simply by reading the bible and listening to men of God. Mama always spoke vividly about the Kingdom yet to come. It is the happiest time of my parents lives, speaking about Christ. I therefore knew christ without reviewing the evidence. Reviewing the evidence in this book has given me a new drive and commitment to the cause and now I am altogether stronger and better grounded. I wish I had read this book years ago! I would definately have had better use of my time witnessing for christ.

Author Lee Strobel makes the statement quoted above at the end of this book. To him, the witness of the Spirit to us through an encounter with Christ is the ultimate confirmation of the truths proposed and taught by Christianity. Before this, he spends 14 chapters in the book looking at common objections some people present for why they do not believe that Jesus is truly God as Christians believe. Strobel--who was once himself a nonbeliever/atheist--refutes the objections and is convinced that the objections are baseless. His arguments convinced me, too, but not all of the chapters were as important to me as the others. We all come to acceptance or rejection of Jesus as God from different places, and unless we are set in our thinking against the truth of Christian revelation, it seems to me that at least some of Strobel's reasons should prove to be persuasive. I have known people, however, who are so set in their opposition to accepting the divinity of Christ that I doubt this book (or any others) will make a difference. (I had a friend in college who was so wounded by life while a child that he turned against God in anger and identified as an atheist. He refused to consider any arguments for Christ and the Church and had build up a wealth of reasons why he was correct.)This book should also be helpful to those who already believe in Christ because it presents many arguments and reservations by those opposed to belief in Christ. Knowing the arguments and sensible reasons against them can help Christians understand those opposing Christ and gives believers understanding of how to counter those arguments.I agree with Strobel about the importance of the Spirit revealing the truth to us. While I was somewhat catechized and taught about Christian truths as a child (as much as a post-Vatican II child could be!) and didn't have great objections to belief, my faith was not deep and wasn't really important to me. Confirmation of my belief came to me as I encountered Christ though Scripture, prayer, the Church and sacraments (especially the Eucharist), and the community of believers. My now long pilgrimage in seeking to know Christ and understand him has led to deeper faith and a more joyful experience of it. Over time, indifference and questions I once had melted away. At times the "melting" was quite rapid; at other times, quite slow. But I persevered and my pilgrimage continues and enriches my life more as time passes. And I think that through me, my faith is also enriching the lives of others too. As Sister Pat says, "Thank you, Jesus."

A must read for anyone with doubts.

Goblins and Snowflakes is the part charming, part creepy retelling of The Elves and the Shoemaker. The charming part is the actual fairy tale retelling. The creepy part pertains to the goblins who provide the magic to make the fairy tale. The novella length story is perfect for a couple hours of escape to the quaint village of Twickenham for a little adventure and a little romance. Every time I read another of Ms. Karsak’s steampunk fairy tales, I want to read more. Within Goblins and Snowflakes are some ties to other characters in Karsak’s steampunk stories, notably for me, the beginning of the Red Cape Society of the Steampunk Red Riding Hood series. Despite those ties, Goblins and Snowflakes is a standalone and can be enjoyed in all types of weather.

What a surprise gem I found in this novella. I was enchanted from the first chapter. I loved Scarlette and the steampunk aspect as well as the fairy tale aspect. I'm very pleased to have discovered this author and I'm looking forward to reading more!

A wonderful story, and the perfect timd of year to read it! I thought the characters were very enchanting! This is the first book I've read of Melanie's, and I shall definitely be purchasing more! If you love fairy tales and magic, this book is for you!

Melanie Karsak has created a steampunk universe where historical figures, like Horace Walpole, interact with fictional ones, and where — hallelujah! — women have career options and are treated with the same respect as men (at least by the men who matter.) It makes for a particularly delightful escape fantasy. This installment takes place a generation or so before the Clemeny (Little Red Riding Hood) series, and tells the story of how the Red Cape Society came into being, in a plot loosely based on the fairytale of the Elves and the Shoemaker, mashed up with Christina Rossetti’s poem, The Goblin Market. Our heroine, Scarlette Rossetti, the “niece” of Horace Walpole, is a natural tinker, and it is her work on the dolls at the local toy shop, to help out the proprietors, that drives the plot forward.Throw in some magic, goblins, a handsome young genius romantic interest, and the Rude Mechanicals, all in the few days leading up to Christmas, and the plot thickens and tension mounts. The best part is that Scarlette manages to save the day with only minimal help—it’s more of a team effort; no “damsel in distress” rescuing required. AND [SPOILER ALERT!] I love that the Red Cap Society owes its name to her!All in all, another delightful jaunt through Karsak’s magical steampunk universe. More! More!

I love these novellas from Melanie. Every time I read one I never want to leave. If you have read any of her other Steampunk Fairy Tales, you will love this. If you have not this is a great place to start as this happens before a lot of the other books. Scarlette is a great character with a big heart and a brilliant mind. Archie is a perfect match for her. It was also nice to get a pick inside R.M. as you only get a glimpse from the outside in the other books, you get more of inside look in this book. You also see how the Red Caps come to light.*I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.*

I really don't think you can get better then this author for amazing, safe, and fun reads. I loved this story based on the Elves and the Shoemaker. It was such a fun retelling. I loved the way the main character, Miss Scarlette Rossetti, was both intelligent, caring but also adventurous. Her heart was so big and it made the story that much more enjoyable. I loved the holiday spirit that was involved, but also the Goblins! It introduced the reader the the creation (in part) of the Red Cape Society, but only gave enough that I will need more. I also really enjoyed the town description and the hint of romance. I have never wanted to be a part of story as much as I am with this author works. Strong and fun characters makes this story worth reading.Any reader can start with this story and understand it without having read any previous stories. I look forward to reading more from Scarlette and Archie in the future. They could definitely keep me engaged for many more books to come (hint, hint...)! I received and ARC and am leaving an honest review.

I love Scarlette Rossetti, the heroine in Melanie Karsak’s Goblins and Snowflakes, and the marvelous steampunk universe that the novel inhabits. This is a wonderful holiday treat with a perfect plot and really beautifully crafted cast of characters. Truly enjoyable and just what any steampunk fan needs for the holiday season. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

Oh my! Talk about a walk on the wild side. I loved this little jewel. This is one exciting, action packed, fast paced, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning bombshell that's as riveting as it is captivating. All the twists and turns, unexpected circumstances and unpredictable surprises around every corner make for incredible experience. The drama, mystery, magic and suspense steadily increases and tension thickens keeping you frozen to your seat and sole focus on the pages. Melanie created a world around us until everything else ceases to exist. The characters are well developed, complex and believable with such depth you feel like your part of the tale instead of on the sidelines. Melanie has such a vast and varied insight as she graphically describes each scenario as they play off one another in a perfect balance. Melanie did a remarkable job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Incredible job Melanie, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.I received a review copy of this story.

#561,667 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

We learn from other readers' comments that it has been distilled from 800 pages down to 200. There are some significant flaws that could and should have been fixed in this heavy-handed editing. Despite all that, the gems of thought in this book are bright enough to shine through some plodding and repetitive prose.Zimmerman describes a universal progression of family organization from the "trustee family" through the "domestic family" and finally the "atomistic" family" in three separate eras: classical Greece, Rome, and contemporary Western civilization. In the broadest terms, in a "trustee family" the current generation is seen as only a trustee for an entity that exists for all time. The trustee family fills the roles that will be taken over by the church and state at higher levels of civilization. Specifically, the trustee family administers its own justice, fights its own wars, and keeps family members in line. Trustee families existed until recently in the feuding Kentucky hills, and they are our plague as America fights in Afghanistan and Iraq. The "domestic family" is the bedrock of traditional civilization, a mother, father, and children who view themselves as integral parts of a civilization: church, state, civil society, and a family structure. The key feature of a domestic family is a commitment to bearing and raising children. The motive may be somewhat economic -- children are certainly useful in an agricultural setting -- but it is equally religious. The parents of a domestic family feel an obligation, usually religious, to bear and her children, and the society reinforces the message that children should obey their parents. The church's call is to "proles, fides, sacramentum" or children, fidelity, and the sacred. Zimmerman goes on at length about the ways in which the Protestant Reformation, the counterreformation, the Enlightenment and then the English, French, and Russian revolutions undermined the domestic family. The "atomistic family"evolves when civilization reaches a high plateau, in which a wealthy, literate class emerges. These intellectuals are skeptical of received wisdom, especially religion, and dedicate themselves to the pursuit of individual pleasures. The morality which held the domestic family together comes to be held in contempt. The individual reigns supreme, and the traditional constraints on divorce, abortion, adultery, homosexuality, all forms of what is otherwise considered sexual but privately, and of course childlessness fall away. The worthier citizens feel they have better things to do with their time than raise children, and the society has to depend on immigration and the fertility of minorities to replenish itself. The move from country to city is part and parcel of the transition from the trustee family through the atomistic family. The apparatus of government works best in urban environments. Children are an outright burden -- they cannot help support the family, and they cost money to feed, clothes, and educate. Government in urban areas is able to promise to support people -- free bread in Rome, free health care in modern Western societies -- in exchange for their tax money and a surrender of freedom. In every exchange the government borrows against the future. When there are enough people without children, that is, with no stake in the future, the government promises are less subject to critical analysis.Zimmerman was well schooled in the classics, and I am grateful to him for several obscure sources. The Latin lawyer Modestius wrote that law's function is to "command, forbid, punish and allow." That sounds like a good synopsis of modern American government's attitude, whether Republican or Democrat. He provides interesting opinions on the writings of Plutarch, Erasmus, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Hume and others, from his unique perspective of family sociology. He provides some examples of retrogression. Progress got ahead of itself in the French and Russian revolutions, during which divorce at will became the standard, and after which the autocrats -- Napoleon and Stalin -- felt obliged to reinforce marriage so they would have some soldiers. Zimmerman was very pessimistic about the United States of 1947, failing to see the emerging baby-boom which would postpone his dire predictions by a quarter century.Still, however, after that quarter century the 1960s delivered every horror that he had predicted, and the ensuing decades have not diminished the plight of the family. The United States depends on massive immigration, legal and illegal, from the precise group that Zimmerman predicted -- Hispanics. Europe likewise depends on Muslims. Unlike our previous generations of immigrants, and those which populated Rome for five centuries, these appear unlikely to become assimilated into the dominant culture. They may indeed repopulate America and Europe, but they will not reproduce its culture.Zimmermann expressed a wan hope that his Harvard intellectuals would finally figure it out and embrace familism. We can say conclusively that that has not happened. Failing that, he projected that a religious revival would be necessary. We see something of a religious revival in the red state/blue state dichotomy. The one is somewhat Christian, the other scoffs at such primitive credulity. And there is mankind's problem. Thinking minds have difficulty embracing religion, but without religion we die out. A sweet dilemma.I'll close with a practical note on the book's shortcomings. For all that it is abridged to one fourth its original size, it is quite repetitive. The index is absolutely terrible -- most of the quoted authors and Latin terms to not appear in it. The essays by the conservatives do not add much. All that said, enough brilliance seeps through that I still give this book a very high rating.

Wonderful history, wow what an eye opener. Seems as though this should be a must ready for our representatives. Their policies, although with good intent continue to destroy the family.

Superb book - fast shipping. Very very nice.

It's amazing how far we as a sound country have drifty. This book is a well read type and enhances the importance of cherishing the value of family: between one man and one woman.

This book really gives you a great look into civilizations and how they would put family first to raise up their culture then when they are on top they allow for things like homosexuality and abortions into their civilizations and they collapse it has happened several times throughout history. We as western civilizations need to be cautious to this and not fall into the same pattern as past civilizations. Highly recommended read very informative.

This book captures what most all seem to fail to realize - that people NOT wanting to have children is the demarcation line for a civilization's demise. The history set forth in this magnum opus is so little spoken of. You will not be able to put the book down.

A superb survey of the family across history. I understand the full multi-volume edition is still out of print, but this abridged version is plenty scholarly, and very readable. It's important to remember while reading that this was written in the 1940s - and to realize how many of his predictions have come true!

Excellent.
