It's not a horrible product, but the shift to savage worlds has taken a bit of the life out of it. Instead of the various mystical types having individual powers they are all lumped together with various powers only available to certain mystic types.. The mad scientist rules are sparse, hard to understand, and lead to insanity just from learning a new power. The good news is it still has all the classic flavor of Deadlands. Also the hucksters are now able cast a fair number of spells before they resort to gambling with evil spirits. (In older editions you tended to either not get your spell off or get backlash.) The book brings together a lot of the setting which required 3-4 books in the past. Note that you will need to own a copy the core savage lands rule book. Also note that this is a really good book, but it's just not as good as 1st edition.

Great book, well produced.

Tons of background stuff for people wanting to use it as a sourcebook. Savage system is a bit lacking for this game, however functions decent enough for a light horror game. One of the core rule additions for the system is the use of poker cards to potentially enhance/inhibit magical effects as well as determine initiative for a gunslinger showdown at high noon. Interesting concepts but could be easily translated into say... FATE Core.

First off you need the basic SAVAGE WORLDS to play this game. The book does a good job of updating the Deadlands franchise keeping some of the original content yet blending it with the Savage Worlds model. By the way, you should like Savage Worlds (which has several similarities to Deadlands like dice exploding, poker initiative, etc) or this game won't fly for you. Think of the Wild West with a twist in History and then toss in steampunk, horror, monsters and all types of Western cliches. I really like the poker method for initiative, the poker chips (which are like the Fate/Action Points in other games), the dueling, and, of course, the world of Deadlands, especially the extended American Civil War as I'm a big time enthusiast. Deadlands purists may not like this as its condensed down into one hardback (the original Deadlands was books upon books). CONCEPT: A minus; MECHANICS: B plus to A minus; PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER: B to B plus; ARTWORK: B to B plus; THE EXTRA TOUCHES: B to B plus; WHEN READ: November to December 2011; OVERALL GRADE: B plus.

This is simply a notification that this particular version of Deadlands has been split and replaced by the Player's Guide and the Marshall's Guide. I bring it to your attention because I was misled for a moment. After some quick research I discovered this, and I'm saving you the trouble. (your welcome!)At any rate, the game itself is really fun, but I subtracted a star because it is not the most current version of this Savage World. (bad joke, sorry...)Seriously, unless you want a more... original... version of the text, search for the Deadlands Reloaded Player's Guide (S2P10204) and you will be good to go until you need details from the Deadlands: Marshal's Handbook. (note: links are examples, only, and may be obsolete or products replaced by future versions of the game)Reference:[...]Thanks for your time!

I have been playing Deadlands since it first launched and I own, in print, just about every deadlands book to come out. This is re-launch of the game with a new rules set that is slimmer and faster than pervious versions of the game, making it faster and more story intensive than prior versions of the game.To be fair the older version has much more story content than this version of the game, if you need details on a particular part of the country there is piles of details you can use if you just go looking. My point on the story is that with lighter rules the stories you are telling tend to be more intensive and engaging. The older rules system was very complicated to learn, once you learned how to run the game it was much more intuitive but it never quite became invisiable. At the time games were experementing with differant types of systems, for example L5R intorduced a roll and keep system that was differant than anything else around at the time. Deadlands original system had you asiging dice types and then rolling a certain number based on traits or skills (wording in the first edition was a little confusing) and then keeping the highest. It also used Cards for initive and chips for damage mitigation as well as experience.Savage Worlds refined the system dropping the extra dice for skills and traits. Before you would roll 3d12 for shooting, now you roll d12 to shoot. Combat resolution was refined by giving players only one card for initive instead of a dice roll and then multiple cards. Chips were dropped in favor of Bennies that do much of the same thing. With Deadlands the chips are back adding back the poker flavor of the system. Metaphysics also re-intorduces the Poker hand for spell resolution, other than that the game is very similar in feel to previous editions while keeping most of the feel of Savage Worlds. In short the game reinvents itself in the relm of Savage Worlds very effectively, old and new players will find much in common with this system. The writing remains effective, easily conveying the feel of the era. A great game all round.

Interesting to hear Ozzy 's side of things, such as him biting the head off of a dove, and a bat, and shooting his chickens. His retelling of stories will make you laugh out loud. Accidentally woke my husband up a few times while reading. The story of the thermometer had me rolling, as did the banana story. He talks about his different jobs, his family, his addictions, the music, and basically how he is just a normal man who happens to be the prince of darkness. Just because he's rich and famous doesn't mean he doesn't take a s*** like the rest of us lolI ordered the book used, and it came in great condition considering how it was a library book in its previous life, which means it has that awesome old book smell that I love so much. All in all, an awesome purchase!

I owned the first 2 Black Sabbath albums. I watched all the Ozzy show episodes on VH1. I knew there was an incidence he admitted to biting the head off of a dove, but he had said publicly he was in a drug black-out at the time and basically regretted it. So I thought he’d changed, had become a lot more lovable and rational off the drugs. In the description of the book he says these things “haunted me.” Yet in the actual book, he turns the cruel things he’s done into a big joke.I got past the fish-killing episode in grade school early on in the book, thinking that was a very strange, ugly thing for a child to do. Then I got to the fire episode where he claimed his mother’s false teeth flew out of her mouth so hard after she coughed that they smashed through a window. At that point I thought, oh no, is this going to be another Stephen Tyler hallucinogenic rambling where he just makes up outrageous stories? Not hardly a page later I come to the part where he says “I got a job I enjoyed…. I was a natural at killing animals.” He goes on for 7 pages about how he enjoyed his job at a slaughterhouse where he worked for a year and a half. The way he jokes all the way through it is absolutely sickening. He goes into detail about the killing, calling it his favorite job, and how he loved to play “his favorite practical joke” using the eyeballs of dead cows. Another fun thing to do was play with stomachs of “crippled old sheep.” He jokes about how the cows struggled to live, “at one point I thought I’d be the one who’d end up in a bun, covered with ketchup.” About his job killing pigs he says “they say the only thing wasted on a pig is the squeal,” and how what he did to the pigs was worth it for a good meal, etc. One story sounds like a joke with a punchline he made up, where he claims he was barbecuing steaks one day when some cows came over from the next field and he told them “I’m sure it’s no relation.” Hilarious, right? It was definitely not the words of someone looking back and wondering how they could have ever thought and acted like that. It’s like he’s bragging about how insanely cruel he was. And there was no drugs to blame for any of this either. What kind of psychopath would enjoy killing animals and give no indication of feeling bad about it? At that point I put the book down in disgust.I don’t understand the 700 almost-all 5-star ratings, except to simply say Ozzy is rich and rich people can buy things. Not a single 1-star rating – yet. How anybody could realistically give this 5 stars after reading those 7 pages of jokes about killing animals is unfathomable. We really need to stop making heroes out of these twisted “celebrities” in society who think animal cruelty is funny or acceptable just because we admire their sportsmanship (Michael Vick) or their musicianship (Ozzy). (And yes, I’m a long-time vegan, for anyone asking, and no, I’m not a member of PETA.)

Ozzy paints his life, from his poor childhood, to the early days of rock-n-roll, to the height of fame and fortune. All in his hilarious style that made me laugh my 'arse' off - the most funny book I've read period, but also full of real-life wisdom. Since childhood, he had ADHD and dyslexia (he could not read), but from the beginning of Black Sabbath though his solo career, most of his albums hit top-10 in both England and America, and millions of fans to this day. An incredibly gifted man, Ozzy is.

Well written amazing tales of an iconic rock and roll musician. Ozzy is hilarious (as most people know) and the stories here are tales of excess and overindulgence. There is another side of Ozzy that comes to light while reading the book: he is truly a nice guy who avoids confrontation at all costs. The early Black Sabbath years are insightful and allows the reader to step into the creative process. Some of the tales of sin and debauchery drag on but the amount of drugs and booze consumed by Ozzy is legendary. All in all I highly recommend this book to those who can't get enough of the backstage, up close and personal views of old time rock and rollers.

Great story for fans of this genre. However some of his most hard-core disciples may be disappointed by a component of it that I won't reveal, and the meek might be mortified by others. All the usual rock bio sex, drugs and general craziness & irresponsibility, etc. but very humorously and sensitively embellished and as well. Often at his own expense. I found myself almost daily sharing parts of it with friends. One of those enlightening books that I looked forward to reading from every day and where in the end the subject became someone who I think I'd like to know personally although before I couldn't have cared less...

Who but the Prince of Darkness could have given us this humorous, brutally honest and darkly compelling autobiography. Reading it brought out a rollercoaster of emotions. I was in turns amused, fascinated and saddened by Ozzy's stories of his bizarre adventures. As he himself admitted, by all reckoning he missed dying upon a number of occasions. Somehow he survived, grew up and faced down his demons.A cautionary tale, but also one about the enduring love of his wife and family who were with him during his darkest hours.
