Review

“The Harvard professor's books are required reading for health care leaders tackling strategy.” — American Hospital Association“A book on understanding Porter is worthwhile because he's often misunderstood. He is widely and rightly regarded as the all-time greatest strategy guru, but that view gets the emphasis wrong.” — Fortune magazine“If you have always intended to read Michael Porter's groundbreaking management classics, but have never quite got around to doing so, Joan Magretta's Understanding Michael Porter does the hard work for you” – Financial Mail (South Africa)“Magretta’s book is a timely reminder that serves to put Porter’s thinking and concepts before us again—ideas that all firms and strategy practitioners would be well-advised to study and learn from…an excellent read.” — Quality Digest“Summing Up: Highly recommended” — CHOICE“Joan Magretta lays out Porter’s ideas on competition in a concise, easy-to-read volume.” — Business Day (South Africa)“The book is a great read even for those who are looking to get initiated into the Michael Porter way of thinking” — The Economic Times (India)“Magretta adds value through fresh case studies showing how companies such as Zara, Ikea and In-N-Out Burger deploy Porter’s ideas. Written in a very accessible style, this is a book for managers rather than academics.” — The Irish Times“Ms. Magretta does a superb job of clearly and logically explaining Prof. Porter’s concepts, with lots of helpful examples. This is a distillation, but it never feels sparse, with ample time for the reader to learn a concept and sufficient reinforcement of the ideas as you are guided through the Porter oeuvre. Reading it brings you up-to-date on his ideas and, more importantly, helps you to understand your own business and the strategic elements you may have missed.” — The Globe & Mail“200 pages of simple, non-faddish common sense for business.” — Anna Farmery, TheEngagingBrand.com“Book of the Month. Michael Porter is considered one of the most important scholars in the field of strategy, and Ms. Magretta's book presents his ideas clearly and concisely. As a professor of strategy who has been teaching Porter's ideas to executives and students for more than 10 years, I enjoyed the book, even though I have read Porter's books and articles themselves. The book can be thought of as a more detailed yet accessible versions of two of his seminal articles, The Five Forces That Shape Competitive Strategy and What is Strategy. If you have not read any of Porter's work before, this book is probably the best vehicle to get introduced to his ideas, and you will gain valuable insights. Even if you have read the above articles however, the book will still be useful, because Ms. Magretta updates the examples, integrates material from other works by Porter and makes the material more accessible without watering it down. The last chapter on Continuity is quite fresh for example. The case study examples have been updated, which was important for me. The discussion of how the desire to grow detracts from strategy is especially insightful and eye-opening. The Q&A with Michael Porter is also unique to this book. Finally, Ms. Magretta presents a list of additional readings case studies for those who are interested in pursuing the material further. In short, there is enough material to satisfy even avid readers of Porter's ideas. One could of course point to some weaknesses as well. The strategy field has advanced quite a lot since Porter's ideas have been presented, and a full understanding of his concepts and views requires relating them to alternative views of strategy. For example, his 1996 article, What is Strategy, was written partly as a defense of his views vis-a-vis some of the alternative views. Furthermore, Porter's ideas are controversial and not universally accepted. Finally, one could argue that examples were picked conveniently to support Porter's views. However, these are more critiques of Professor Porter's views, rather than of the book itself. One word of caution: Porter's ideas are wide-ranging. He has written about diverse topics such as competitive advantage of nations, clusters and global strategy and health care. Those are not in this book. This book focuses on his ideas on the field of business strategy, which is where he made his biggest mark. The book will be most relevant and useful for practicing managers, especially senior managers or those who are part of the strategy formation process in their organizations. However, the general reader can also gain valuable insights. As someone who teaches and studies business strategy, I highly recommend this book.

If you are a fan of Michael Porter's work, or you simply want to get a deeper understanding of competitive strategy – I cannot possibly recommend this book highly enough. I underlined page after page of great ideas and then created a summary which I would consider some of the best information I have been able to put together on truly understanding strategy. I have been teaching strategic thinking at the Wharton School of Business as a guest lecturer for more than 15 years and I found this book truly valuable.

Great book to understand Porter 5 forces and test if you have good strategy. Magretta summarizes Porter's work into an easy and clear book to read. I have researched on Porter's concepts but found this book to have the most material on his theories.

This is a well researched, well written book, unlike what I have read in management literature in some time. Yes, it draws must (if not all) its ideas from the great Michael Porter. However, the book's delivery is superb. I will read it again, as it is a fresh reminder of all that I learnt at my MBA at London Business School. If you want to read a great management book, look for no further than Understanding Michael Porter by Joan Magretta. The other book I would highly recommend, if you have the time, is From Zero to One: Notes on Startups and how to Build the Future.

Concise and actionable, though based on broad topics that can sometimes be overwhelming or bland. I run a small marketing agency of 9 people and was interested in learning more about "Harvard MBA style concepts" that might help me develop further as an entrepreneur. This was a GREAT resource and something I really enjoyed. Highly recommended if you're looking to learn more about "big CEO" type of stuff you can apply to your small business. Note there are no "silver bullets" or aw ha moments - I would say this book just gives you a broader perspective and frameworks for how to understand and plan.

Reading Michael Porter can be very tedious but understanding Michael Porter as written by Joan Magretta makes Michael Porter is the title of the book says extremely understandable. Top-notch book for understanding strategic marketing and product positioning

I enjoyed the book. I have both Porter’s key books on my shelf and never read them completely through. I read this one and it kept my attention, hit the core of Porter’s frameworks and used a lot of supplemental material from Porter to fill in gaps. Had a nice flow and writing style is good. Porter’s work stands the test of time for business strategy. If you want a good distillation of Porter’s timeless principles it’s worth’s a read.

Makes his concepts much more accessible...regular business people who don't want to wade through the original texts will find this very useful. Also, there are updates and expansions to the models. The author was authorized by Porter to write the book...there's even an interview with Dr Porter at the end. Incredibly helpful!

My middle-schooler actually liked this book!!!My son and I struggled partway through some incredibly boring books on the middle school reading list. When it became apparent that he wouldn't finish on time, I desperately looked for something else on the list, knowing that whatever we picked would have to be read morning, noon, and night for him to finish on time. Thank goodness for this book! The story is fascinating and well told, and we thoroughly enjoyed a weekend of binge-reading it.Even little brother read and enjoyed it with us - voluntarily. This a great read for young and old, which I plan to pass on to their older sister and my parents.

William's world was not my world. His life was filled with ancient magic and mystery, security was having sacks of corn and not having them was death. A delicious treat wasn't got at the local ice cream shop, but by catching delicious flying ants or trapping birds between a slingshot and a stack of homemade Adobe bricks. Going to school was far from guaranteed, and when famine meant the teachers and students were starving to death, in the schools, it also wasn't a place to find food or shelter. The more William lost, the more he craved. He wanted to learn and when he was blocked from school by his inability to pay the fees, he found the free library, and a book about energy. He figured out how a windmill worked, and "I tried and I made it" barely covers the amazing fact that he built it from recycled trash, only after building the tools he needed, no drill? Heat a nail to red hot and insert it in a corn cob for a handle. The windmill was only one step in his understanding. He had to figure out AC/DC and voltage and insulation, he had to figure out how to make a generator and switches and a circuit breaker to keep his created electricity from burning down the grass roofed hut they lived in, and when his wires collapsed the termite riddled supports of the roof he had to call in the chickens to get the termites out of his bedding. He blended science with hard work and creativity to bring light and a water pump to his village, and to make the world realize that even the starving kids in Malawi have much to offer.

This was a gift for my 10 year old grandson. He reads a lot and above his grade level. When he saw the title he wasn't impressed and thought he wouldn't like it, but once he started reading it he couldn't stop. He apologized later because he had said he wouldn't like it, but really loved it.

My 10 year old loved this book. He said it was a very easy read and thought his 8 year old brother could easily read it. He found the story fascinating and inspiring. The main character and their community go through many hardships. It was eye opening to my son, reading about a life so different from his own, yet it was also much the same. Inspiring because a kid was able to take spare bike parts and make a windmill. It was a very “kids can do big things” message for my son. He loved retelling the story over dinner. At the end, my son declared this to be his new favorite book.

This story is a factual account of a young boy's search for a way to help his village. His interest in windmills to generate electricity led him to his community llibrary where he researched the idea. I liked the way the story leads the reader from problem, to idea, to research, to solution, and finally extension. In education, teachers want young students to be able to do all of these steps: recognize, define, apply, evaluate, design, extend. All the lessons are incorporated in one story! The fact that this inventor was so young also helps students to realize that you don't have to be famous, rich, highly educated, or an adult to do something of great importance. The cultural part of the story suggests to students that not everyone has the advantages that we, as Americans, are able to enjoy, such as having water on demand. The book's mixture of illustration and authenic photos make the story more realistic, so students can realize that this event actually occurred and that the boy in the story is real. This makes it easier to identify with the boy...his life, his interests, his actions, his dreams. I bought this book for my eight-year-old grandson, but it could be read to a younger audience, and I would greatly recommend it to all age groups.

Young reader edition has almost the same number of pages but print is larger and vocabulary is a little more accessible (though not "dumbed down"). My 3rd grade son enjoys reading so he chose it for a non-fiction book report and loved it. Then I read it and loved it too. Of course the famine is very difficult and sad, but the can-do attitude of author William is remarkable. He's an admirable, inspiring problem solver. My son could look at the world through a very different perspective which I think is priceless. We're now getting the rest of the family to read it too. Highly recommended. (FYI...The first chapter tells of witch doctors and magic which may require some explanation for very literal young readers, and I think the book improves quickly after this early section.)

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind This is a story of a young man’s thirst for knowledge and an indomitable spirit. Among the hardships of his local village, poverty, and devastating famine, William Kamkwamba endured and succeeded. The author’s spirit and determination carries him through all of these challenges. Along the way we get a picture of the crushing poverty of this region in Africa. There is a picture here that points the way for the promise of new technology. Implementing these new technologies in the creation of wind driven electricity, creative means in the pumping of fresh water and the utilization of biogas production for fuel points the way for a brighter future for the impoverished people in Africa and elsewhere I would like to point out that, perhaps, the donor nations should reconsider some of their project requirements. It may be that small scale projects down at the village level might bring promising results without all of the waste and corruption of large scale development projects that promise so much and often deliver so little. This book is an inspiring read.

Yen Press did a great job re-releasing the Kingdom Hearts Mangas. The translation is completely redone, and each volume this time around contains two of the volumes you could buy back in the day. So even though these books are more expensive than the individual original ones, they're technically the same price as before, or even a little less depending on where you buy them. My only complaint is that this new version erases a lot of the Japanese sound effects, which I always enjoyed reading to practice Japanese sound effects in the original Tokyopop ones! It wasn't a deal breaker for me, though, so I wasn't that disappointed. As for the story, if you've never played the games, it's not the worst entry into the series ever, but the pace is a little odd, so without any prior knowledge everything might seem a little sudden and random. For someone like me who's played all the games, though, this manga is a great way to revisit everything from the first game! I highly recommend these Mangas for anyone who is interested in Kingdom Hearts!

This volume continues right off from where the first volume leaves off. Exactly like the first game in the series. It was wonderful to see Winnie the Pooh, Atlantica, Neverland, and many more in the book. I thought it was cool to even see Roxas in the book and the artist does a wonderful job of making all the characters look like themselves. A really good buy for any Kingdom Hearts fan both young and the young at heart.

I bought these because I also have the original Tokyopop versions and the Yen Press rerelease is a much higher quality. For anyone looking to understand the series better, or just fans of the series in general, these make a fantastic addition to your collection.

I do like how it contains a lot more chapters and it’s reprinted now, I like the art in there too.Too bad this volume doesn’t have Beauty and the Beast chapter, it’s why I bought this ;_;It has Aladdin, Classic Black and White, Mulan, Hercules, and Miney’s castle chapters, Twilight Town, Kairi’s chapter, but no Beauty and the Beast.

This "Kingdom Hearts" volume is much thicker (take three of any earlier "Kingdom Hearts" manga and that is about how thick this volume is). Maybe that's because it's now printed by Yen Press and not Tokyo Pop? As for the story, it is still goofy and playful. However, I do think Shiro Amano's artwork has matured quite a bit. I am very pleased with this purchase.

A fun and delightful read. Reading it makes you want to play the game again!

Great artwork makes up for short action sequences and sometimes questionable pacing. A decent read for those looking for a fun retelling of the first game.

In really glad that the game was released in comic format, since I haven't been able to play the game in awhile 👍 thank you Shiro Amano!!!

This is an absolutely delightful anthology! Xi Xi is a wonderfully original poet and Feeley a skillful translator who has a sharp sense for the original language. The translations are extremely readable, and the notes at the back help to understand even the linguistic subtleties that cannot easily be rendered. The collection is bilingual, which is an extra bonus. Loved it!

This book is too cute.

This collection of poems is a hidden gem. Xi Xi's eclectic sense of childlike wonder about an array of curiosities, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to clouds hovering over an emissions plant planning a strike, are exquisitely captured in this translation. The added notes are an extra bonus and one can appreciate the challenges of translating numerous onomatopoeias, inanimate entities expressing human affect, and the intricacies of the original author's personal surroundings. The translations flow so naturally, that they often invoke a false sense of simplicity and ease. I got this book as a Christmas gift and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an affinity for the sometimes forgotten art of poetry-a truly refreshing read!
