Mary Crow Dog is a Sioux Lakota Native American woman. The book was copyrighted in the year 1990. It tells the turmoil that Native Americans endure to understand and keep their Indian traditions and to also live in a white man's world. Some are full blood but many are half bloods trying to find their place in life. The book describes life on the reservation and talks about the conflict at Wounded Knee between the FBI, local police and the Native American Indians. The reader will learn a lot about Indian religion and the different ways of practicing it such as the Sun Dance, Ghost Dance, Sweat Lodge, etc.

I remember the 1973 Wounded Knee stand, but never knew the real details. I am grateful that Mary Crow Dog wrote her account of this defining time. I have always felt a certain sadness of Anna May Aquash's life and murder, so Mary Crow Dog's remembrance of her friend was poignant indeed. Life is short and precious, it is difficult to believe that Mary Crow Dog has passed and her life and time is now part of the great Lakota Sioux Nation's turbulent history. Invaluable historical record written by a woman who was there.

We think the native americans suffered injustice in the XIX century; but the harassment continuous today. This is a story of the second part of the XX century. Sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes heartwarming, Lakota Women is not extraordinarily well written, but it is written with honesty and love. I would recommend it to the people that like social history. All Americans should know the real stories of the Native Americans and what they went through.

Mary I want to thank you for taking me back to 1970 my husband and I were stationed at ellsworthair base and I saw first hand how the so called towns folk treated the lakota nation,,,there was sucha struggle...and to read how brave you and your people were...IT upset me all over again to see thatsouth dakota was settled by the first americans the indian...my ancesters came from Italy and Ireland... I had a friend that was stationed with us Quintan LaGrande...one night he put his native clothes on and showed us briefly a dance his people did at the pow wows...i could see how such pride went into the sybolic feathers and animal hide and everything ...I have since gone to a pow wowand when I entered and heard and felt the beat of the drums and the singing I felt it was important and came from the earth ....bless you for your book

A very good story, and an important one to read. It does not flow well, and jumps around in timelines, however, so at times it was difficult to follow. The story is that of the life of a woman born into very difficult circumstances, as a "half-breed" Lakota. Her family lives in abject poverty on a reservation, and even when she is sent to be educated in a Catholic school, she is punished for her heritage. She grows to embrace her tribal customs and rituals, and joins in the movement to better the lives of the American Indians, risking her life to make a difference. It was worth the effort to read.

I have native American heritage and know quite a bit about how the Indians were slaughtered and disgraced in the early daysof the white invasions. I also had read about and have known some of the participants in the AIM and Wounded Knee siege. With this book I learned so much more. The courage and heart of Mary Crow Dog and her family and the others who took up thecause and fought so hard to bring attention and some justice to the Native American people is awe inspiring. Too many had tosuffer and die for this recognition and we are fortunate to have the real story of these events.

I give the content of the book 5 stars as I think anyone who is not Native American should know how these people have been treated by our esteemed government officials. It is totally disgusting and inexcusable. My eyes were certainly opened as I did not know of many of the atrocities that Mary cited in her book. This lady is definitely a survivor and my heart goes out to her.I give it 4 stars as the organization of some of the material made we wonder if I was on the wrong page as some of the content was repeated. Mr Erdoes should have been a better job of editing and arranging,

Mary Crow Dog gives an in depth insight into the life of the American Indian woman. Telling of the abuse and degradation of trying to preserve there heritage by leading the life of their forefathers. All the while being forced to the ways of the "white man" and punished for the ways of their heritage. The story is an eye opening view into the cover ups by the people and the government as to what was done then to the Indian nations and what is still happening today on the reservations.

This book is an excellent resource for engaged couples/couples on the path to engagement in the near future. My boyfriend and I are planning to be engaged by spring, and we wanted to find a book to go through to get us covering all of the bases. We're not religious, and it was sort of difficult to find a marriage prep book that wasn't faith-based. This one seemed like a good fit, so I tried it out, and I'm so glad I did.It takes some of the usual topics -- like finances, children, religion, family dynamics etc -- but goes into great detail, thinking of hypothetical scenarios and requiring each person to name their expectations, intentions, desires going forward. My almost fiance and I have had very engaging conversations, and I feel more prepared for marriage as a result of this book. The questions tend to be time-consuming, so we typically only do one or two chapters at a time. 1001 questions, some requiring more thought and others more straightforward, is an awesome resource for couples looking to take the next step. I highly recommend it.

This book is FANTASTIC and I buy a copy for any friend who is thinking about getting engaged. Some folks complained this book has logical basic questions you should know about your spouse before agreeing to walk down the aisle - but that's exactly the point! I really do think far too many people getting married nowadays assume once they know the very basics (Do you want kids? Do you want to be rich? Will we share a bank account?) and they love the person, they're set! I think the "logical" things aren't all that common anymore and there is nothing to hurt in prepping yourself and your future spouse as much as possible beforehand - you WANT to stay together right? So take some time and go through this. My fiancé and I sat around, going through the questions together, a few day while lounging about after work - it's not hard and can even be fun. We knew far more than it seems many couples knew going into the book, but still found good topics to cover! And we've been happily married for six years. This book walks couples through a lot of the LOGICAL (sorry, no, they're not all fun and whimsy - but fun and whimsy doesn't build a marriage, those are the perks!), solid questions you should cover before committing your life to someone. Beyond having kids, it walks through what you might each do in a situation during their upbringing. On finances, you go from basics about banking to taxes to how to handle situations regarding layoffs and other woes. From defining each version of "cheating" (this really does vary person to person, oddly enough, as so many couples forget about lines coworkers may try to cross or emotional cheating), etc.If you can't sit down and go through this book with the person you plan to marry because you find it boring or the questions obsolete - frankly, you probably shouldn't be getting married. You'll only gain healthy insight and good, open discussions on any possible disagreements - no losses, here. And if you make it to the very end of the book and find that you gained nothing new and had already come to agreement on every single question posed, then be GLAD you were able to spend $10 to find out that you really DO know what you're in for.

We've had friends hit points in their relationships where they realize they're at an impasse with their partners about major issues (or seemingly minor points in them that become major) like finances, family, careers, or religion, and say that they wish they had talked about it before it became major. It seems so much more difficult to discuss these things once they become points of contention, and we hoped to try to avoid at least some of that by discussing what we can early on.We didn't go through every single question in this book – some we had already discussed, for example, and some didn't seem applicable to us – but the sheer variety and depth of the questions was wonderful. Though we'd already talked about a lot of the big ticket items, there were definitely things in here that we hadn't discussed, both in terms of details on those items and other topics we hadn't thought about. The questions also helped to clarify or solidify where we, as a couple (and in some cases as individuals), stand on certain topics, and we find ourselves still referencing what we discussed using the questions in this book when making decisions years later.Of course one book or set of conversations won't address every possible thing that could come up in the course of a lifetime, of course some impasses are going to be reached no matter how much you talk, and of course marriage involves an ongoing conversation, but something like this can help with the start.

I have not personally read The Black Tattoo, however I purchased this for my son as a Christmas present. He literally wore out his paperback copy of the book from reading it so many times and from loaning it to his friends. He was absolutely thrilled to receive the Hardcover book and even happier when he realized that the cover was also a poster. The condition was as described. I am very happy with my purchase.

I really am scratching my head. The premise of the book sounded fascinating - The Scourge, an evil entity is released to awaken a dragon in Hell to destroy the universe. I started reading and must say that the book captured you and kept you reading. But do the characters make you like them? Do you want to read its sequel? This is one dark book - most of the action takes place in Hell. Charlie has been duped by the Scourge into thinking he will rule Hell, and goes with him into the realm, Jack, his best mate, follows to rescue him, and then Esme, the last member of an ancient organization to imprison the Scourge, follows them to contain the Scourge and place him back in his prison.I didn't like the varied demons. I didn't like that God joined Hell because he was bored with things. I didn't like the French secret group how were supposed to 'save' Esme. The trio of Esme, Jack and Charlie have the potential to create an interesting series, but I do not think I will be reading them. This is not Hogwarts. This is not Harry, Ron and Hermione. I do not see any comparisons other than there are 3 young people. As a fan of sci-fi, thrillers, I can tell you this is one heck of a book. (sorry I had to do that) But it did not click for me.Well written, good cover and poster. You may really like the book - it has potential and you may like this struggle between light and dark. But I did not, and cannot see a young person reading this without being disturbed by the beings and the action in Hell. Why am I giving the book 5 stars? It is an excellent read, and many will like it, but I am honest in telling you this was not my kind of book.

This is the first novel my 13 child has read, after years of me trying to get her to read. She loved this book and wanted one for her own! It's not a romance, it's age appropriate, it inspires creativity. My only concern would be the religious aspect, if you are set in your ways and unable to embrace imagination, then don't read this book! Otherwise, it's very good.

It took me weeks to read this bookMuch longer than it shouldIt's long and sometimes rambles, thoughIt's basically quite goodFor several thousand years or moreEntrapped beneath a treeThere lies the evil demon ScourgeWho's yearning to get freeHe snares an unsuspecting hostTo help with his escapeThe Black Tattoo's his trademarkAnd it's always changing shapeA battle with the BrotherhoodSoon puts them to the testCan Esme and the loyal JackDerail the Scourge's quest?A tale of evil and of goodWith other stuff as wellA floating shark, a bat andGladiators down in hellThe dialogue is sometimes weakThe plot may be confusingBut though this novel is quite darkYou'll find some parts amusingFor readers who are 9 and upAnd know what they're aboutIt isn't Harry PotterBut it's well worth checking outAmanda Richards, March 8, 2007

A light, enjoyable read
