 Marvel started me on these "Art of" books with their excellent, high quality line. While I don't buy art books for every film (not even the ones I really enjoy) I immediately preordered Crimson Peak when it was announced. I loved Pan's Labyrinth and El Orfanato, so I new Guillermo Del Toro's imagery and designs would be unique, creative and macabre. Happily, I wasn't wrong.While the film has some issues, I still enjoyed it. The book is the same. It has stunning photography throughout from the film, including images from the posters, but there are also a handful of "curiosities" tucked into the pages. These include replica photos featured in the film, letters, biographies, and more tacked onto the pages (they can be removed easily), plus a pocket built into the back cover which holds a poster. The book has beautiful production values: thick, glossy pages, full color and a heaviness to it.Further, the text is brilliant - enriching the mythology of the film to a whole new level. I cannot wait to watch it again to see some of what I missed and look at other things with new insight. There are chapters on each of the four main characters, including some of their biography to help provide additional perspective into their motivations. But the best sections are easily the house and the ghosts. Simply seeing the house in the film, you marvel at the level of detail and sumptuousness of the set. Del Toro's process for designing it is engrossing. The ghosts, which were my favorite part of the film, also have backstories and purpose. I love how the first and last ghosts we see are black, with the 3 red ones haunting the house and then one, lone, white ghost. The use of color and texture truly sets the film apart from others. Everything here enriches the film experience.I do have a couple minor criticisms. If you watch my video, you'll hear a slight peeling sound. The book arrives tightly sealed in plastic to keep the extras enclosed. But it is VERY tight so that some of the pages stick together upon opening. Unfortunately, this results in a ghosting effect where ink is transferred to the opposite page - which is very noticeable since almost all the pages are black with white text. Plus, one of the inserts has staples in it that caused an indentation in several pages. Second, this book really needs a slipcase to protect those curiosities from falling out after you've opened it. The Marvel books are sold at the same price point, and include a case, so I'm not sure why one wasn't included. I would have happily paid a bit more to get one, just to ensure nothing is lost.Overall, the book is beautiful and I do not regret the purchase at all, despite these minor negatives. If you are a fan of Del Toro, Gothic imagery, or art books in general, this is a great purchase. Highly recommended.

Upon opening the book I knew this was a book was a labor of love.The book is put together like one of Del Toro's film itself with deliberate intention to serve a specific purpose. There are "newspaper clippings" of in depth detailed biographies of each of the characters in the film. There are costume sketches from Kate Hawley the custom designer. There are several behind the scene pages dedicated to building the magnificent Allerdale Hall itself. There are fun little pull outs like the Thomas Sharpe letter to Edith Cushing featured in the film. On the back cover there is an envelope that contains a beautiful promotional poster for the movie itself. For the money I say you are getting a bargin. It is easily a $50 book. I have included photos so that you can see what I am talking about

Although the book is beautiful, I was very disappointed in the print quality. Many of the pages were stuck together when I received it, and there are also creases on some of the pages from the inserts. The silver ink used for the printing transferred over to the opposite pages, and in some places when I separated the pages it left white marks.

I had been eagerly awaiting this since I pre-ordered. Literally within the hour of hearing this book would be produced, I hit the *order* button.(Unfortunately, the first copy I got was ruined by poor delivery handling. Just as fortunately, Amazon's fantastic customer service policy ensured I received a pristine copy the next day).And the hype? Totally warranted. This is perhaps the most gorgeous "coffee table book" I've ever seen. Each turning of a page reveals even more sumptuous, gorgeously rendered and detailed visual art: photos, drawings, pull-out items - all. And the written descriptions are detailed and eloquent, providing real insight to production design decisions. As I'm typing this, my son, not exactly a Gothic Romance fan, is turning the pages and exclaiming: "oooh.... oh, look at that contrast!" and "wow, pretty!" and "I want his workshop." and "spooky!".This is a treasure trove.

As much as I love "Crimson Peak," reading through all the details and techniques and symbols placed inside each niche of the film; in sound and architecture and costume among others; really made me think of what went wrong. When Del Toro had such rich backstories for each character, when the House itself was meant to be a living character, what happened? Why did the scenes that were supposed to show the grandness of all the talent poured into the movie end up having a thin main male character, a Mary Sue protagonist, and a borderline just odd female villain accompanied by some great visuals? Compared to what this book says the movie was supposed to be, the end result falls so short. So was it the script? Was it dialogue or direction or editing? Honestly I am sitting here thinking "Crimson Peak" should have been done in a different way with all the care that went into a story that was not even quarterly told: 1) With Thomas as the leading character or 2) as a limited television series.That goes to show how amazing this art book was. There is so much more to the heartbeat of the film than what the camera showed us a year ago.

We found this book to be very, very helpful in planning side trips from our stay in Brussels. Also, going home via Amsterdam for only one night and it gave us an idea of what we can and cannot see that evening.

Daytrips has everything you need to be a do-it-yourself tourguide. Trips are based on major cities in each country with estimated distances and times, so you can see what you want on your schedule. Each trip has at least one, and more often several, walking tours all of which begin at the train station (or bus stop if the area doesn't have one). The maps are detailed and clear; although I would recommend stopping at the local tourist information center and acquiring a map-locations for information centers are always highlighted. Each tour has some historic background on the area, places to visit and some dining suggestions. As a previous reviewer has noted, take prices and opening times with a grain of salt-they can and do change. I was a tour guide in this region (including Germany) for three years, and this book was always in my backpack. Without a doubt, Luxembourg, Belgium, and rural Holland are under visited by tourists. Luxembourg is probably the best-kept secret in Western Europe. The people in Benelux are friendly, especially towards Americans, prices are not outlandish and the scenery is excellent. HIGHLY Recommended.

This book rocked! We made last-minute travel plans to Brussles with no idea of what we would find once we got there. The book contains practical and interesting walking tour maps of plenty of towns worth visiting. This came in quite handy when we began taking the trains throughout Benelux using Brussels as our hub.Of all the books we brought with us on the trip (Frommers, Fodor, Time Out and others), This book turned out to be the most useful of all and was the most dog-eared by the end of our two weeks.We only used one of the restaurant reccomendations -- no great shakes, but then again, that was not what the book was for.

This story, told in graphic format with simple, but expressive, black-and-white illustrations, combines the normal rebelliousness of an intelligent adolescent with the horrors of war and totalitarianism. Marji's parents, especially her freethinking mother, modeled a strong belief in freedom and equality, while her French education gave her a strong faith in God. Her Marxist-inclined family initially favored the overthrow of the Shah, but soon realized that the new regime was more restrictive and unfair than the last. The girl's independence, which made her parents both proud and fearful, caused them to send her to Austria. With bold lines and deceptively uncomplicated scenes, Satrapi conveys her story. From it, teens will learn much of the history of this important area and will identify with young Marji and her friends. This is a graphic novel of immense power and importance for Westerners of all ages. It will speak to the same audience as Art Spiegelman's Maus (Pantheon, 1993).Susan H. This book or comic is already pretty popular, and already a highly recommend book so what can I offer that these others haven't mentioned? I don't know, I honestly don't think I can but maybe someone can take away something about what I say. Now there not a lot of books dealing with Iran or the Iranian revolution and if their is I haven't found them yet. Now this book is about a young girl going through Iran cultural revolution and how people change and how her whole family had to change or adjust to their surroundings. Eventually she goes to Europe or France (if I remember correctly) and having to deal with love, liberals or hippies, and racism and mean nuns. I don't think story is the first of its kind but that doesn't mean that it should be undermined. The story has great illustrations and how the author deals with this struggles. In a way you see her loose her innocents through a child's eyes till adulthood. There are plenty of stories of young woman having to deal with change, and their countries sexist views and using their religion to justify their actions. Even some American states do it, so calling us nothing or better than Iran is hypocritical. If your intrested in Iran, or the story of a young girl having the deal with change or racism, or the struggles of living in a very conservative/ religious country I would highly recommend this book. Thank you for reading my review. Now if your looking for another Iran comic book that deals with serious issues like Persepolis then look no further than Zahra's paradise.

This is part 1 of a 2 part story. Ms. Satrapi's masterpiece is one of my favorite works in all of comics. I read this when it came out and foisted it upon all of my comic reading friends. I gave a copy to a niece several years ago, and then recently bought another copy for another niece for her 11th birthday (I'll hold off on part 2 for her until she is 14). Because I had given it to both nieces, my 76 year old mother decided to read it. She is a retired English teacher, and she was floored at how good the story was and how powerful the medium of comics are in telling a story. Persepolis ended up jumpstarting my mother's interest in comics, and in the following weeks she read all three volumes of March, both volumes of Maus, the Story of My Tits, Chicken with Plums, and Two Brothers (this last one confused her, but she loved everything else).So, there you have it. This floored my 11 year niece and my 76 year old mother. It's brilliant and timeless.

A long time ago my high school history teacher put the movie version on in class, much to the dismay on my classmates. A lot of people began complaining about it so my teacher turned it off. I remember being so fascinated by Marjane Satrapi's story and finally picked myself up a copy of her book. What a wonderful story. I think what I love most about the book (which is made up of comic strips) is how different the emotions can be and change. One story/comic strip will have you laughing, another furious, and another heartbroken. It was truly inspiring to see how Ms. Satrapi moved about her life and the trials and tribulations that came with it. Loved it and would highly recommend.

Finally, in the early 21st century do we receive a woman's view of life in Iran. Persepolis deserves to sit among Hirsi Ali's Infidel and Husseini's Murder in the Name of Honor. Perhaps because he parents were not overly devout Muslims, Marjane was permitted to read to her heart's content. She assimilated copious quantities of political dogma at a young age, which enabled her to see things from several perspectives.We are shown life through Marjane's eyes from her days in elementary school (even then she is a bit of a rebel, unwilling to wear the burka in the desert, though she is not alone here). Growing up in a society where social class and gender matter more than anything else, she feels genuine grief for her maid, who is doomed never to marry the neighbour she loves. Fortunate enough to evade the bullets through serendipity before the Shah's overthrow, she is forced to mature rapidly and learns that she must not blame children for the atrocities of their parents. Perhaps the most profound moral of her childhood tribulations is the price of freedom and the tragedy for those left behind, hoping, worrying and fearing for the fate of their loved ones who were imprisoned for being enemies of the state. Everyone living in the democracy must be grateful they are not suffering the fate of North Koreans.Always, regrettably, the dark puppet-masters are omnipresent. Willing to aid despots in their quest for power, the common people are often forgotten and seen as expendable. With no means to resist armed police (or escape from a barricaded cinema), their insurrections are often easy to quell. Recurrent themes are the deadly chains of hatred, vengeance and bitter grief. Forgiveness is a laudable goal, and though Gandhi succeeded in his endeavours, one is always left wondering whether the cost in human lives was worthwhile. Was there a better way? Could the soldiers have been convinced or coerced to turn against their own oppressive regime if necessary?Although told from Majane's perspective, the stories of her uncles, friends and extended families also receive their fair share of space. Each chapter of the first half reveals more of the history and culture of Iran in the 70s and 80s. No detail is omitted and the harsh realities of a country in the throes of anarchy are laid bare for readers to vicariously experience.Her secondary education in Vienna enabled her to learn more about the world beyond Iran's narrow and artificial borders. Like Anne Frank's diary, as Marjane matures, so too does her writing style and vocabulary. Despite being a comic book, the latter half is full of text and can be quite vexing to slog through. The most poignant and tragic moment comes when Marjane rejects her homeland and chooses freedom over a patriarchal dictatorship.

I am a huge Supernatural fan and having been watching it from the beginning. So, of course, I bought this book as soon as I could. I have to say, I'm a little bummed. On the one hand, most of it is very well done and I enjoy that it's "written" by Sam and Dean. However, they really should have fact checked better. Some of the stuff they have is just not correct. For instance, in the Wendigo section, it says that they first encountered one in Rhode Island and that Dean took it out with a flare gun. In the season 1 episode Wendigo they did first encounter one and Dean took it out with a flare gun...in Black Water Ridge, Colorado. There are a few other places where they have similar information that just isn't correct. Most of the illustrations are phenomenal. However, the ones that are supposed to be of people we've met are really not very good likenesses. I was very disappointed in that. It could have been a truly wonderful tie-in...if they had edited and fact checked better.

This book didn't meet my full expectations. First off, it's a nice "creative/artistic" book with some information, but its coming from "Sam" and "Dean" which is cool, you would think. The disappointment is, not every monster/supernatural being they dealt with is in this book. There's some information, but its as if the writer was only trying to match what Sam/Dean would say and not reveal full knowledge of each. Also, a few errors here and there.I was expecting this book to contain every (every) single monster/ghost/being from each episode of Supernatural. I'd also prefer a full "index" type book, like how in the show, where they'd talk about searching through the "lore" about, like the creatures weaknesses, strengths, and how to kill it. Also, it would be nice to know what season and maybe what episode it was in. Now, that would be a decent Supernatural Monster book.Again, its a great art book, but that was its main priority - the art.

It is a good book but some of the information on it is wrong. For example when they are talking about Lucifer they mention that Michael got stuck in the cage with him when Lucifer was first cast out which is not true. Michael is dragged into the cage with Sam and Lucifer at the end of season 5. Also the illustrations of some of the characters that we have met dont match the actor. But it was a good book.

Oh my gosh - I am in the process of reading it, and I totally love it. The comments on the various creatures are written as though it is either Sam (typing) or Dean (handwriting) themselves who are providing the info. It is a fun book and I'm sure that anyone who is a bigtime Supernatural fan, like me, will love this book.

The art in this is DISMAL. The characters look like starved, furious cartoons of themselves. If you looked at a drawing with no written context you would not be able to identify them. Not even Sam or Dean. Very disappointed in this book. Bought as a gift early fall and didn’t open until Christmas so the return window is closed.

If you know someone that loves this show and has any sort of collection with items from the franchise, this is likely to be the new centerpiece.

The book is great, however mine arrived damaged and I had to get a replacement.

Adult/High School-There is a perception that during the Holocaust, the Jews rarely physically fought back against the Nazis. The most avid readers of World War II books know that resistance did occur (the best known is the Warsaw Ghetto uprising), but it was not enough to change the course of the genocide. The Brigade tells a different story. A 5000-man "Jewish Brigade" was formed from settlers in Palestine, but it was not until the waning days of the war, in November 1944, that the British sent it to fight. This account is told from the perspective of three soldiers and relies heavily on interviews the author conducted with them. It takes readers from the early days of the brigade, through the frustration of the soldiers who were sitting out the war, to the combat operations of the closing days of the war in Italy. The Jewish Brigade had little impact on the outcome of World War II, but its existence was critical to the future state of Israel. Almost from the very beginning, it was involved in smuggling Jewish refugees out of Europe and into Palestine. This book is not a standard military history, but is written more like a novel. I loved this book...totally riveting and the fact that it is a true story of some of the original "Inglorious Bastards" made it even more interesting. The courage of the Jewish soldiers and their fight to get in on the fight was inspiring. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in this part of history. The books is really well written. An untold story that is really worth a read.

I have read many books about WWII but was not familiar with the Jewish fighters that were finally allowed to go into Italy with the Allies. This book gives a lot of background about the political forces that were at work behind the scenes, first keeping them out of the war, and then allowing this unique group of soldiers to be formed and deployed near the end of the war. That was interesting, but what happened after the war is where the story gets even more intense as these men come to see what was happening to their people, the Jewish people, throughout Europe. I was so pleased they ended the book meeting up with these same men many decades later and telling the rest of the stories of their lives. Very well worth the time for readers wanting to get a wider picture of that terrible time in history.

This is not a historical fiction novel, although it may read like one. Blum has done the almost impossible task of digging out even the storylines from revealing sources. He has cobbled one excellent story from the stories of three separate real men, and the story appears to be of one thread. These very men and hundreds more just like them were responsible for the birth of the modern nation of Israel. Without the personal sacrifices of these men and many thousands more, the nation of Israel would have been stillborn. Thank God for these men!

The biblical history of the Jewish people is one of peaks and valleys, the valley of Egyption bondage, peaks of King David and Solomon, and the valley of the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities as recorded in the minor and major prophets. Then the oppression under the Romans followed by the diaspora. But where there was judgment and attrition, God always provided a remnant, and it is the renmant, the survivors, of WWII that made their way to Palestine. The Jewish Brigade was in the right place at the right time. By accident or fortuitous coincidence? I think not. Read it and decide for yourself.

A masterpiece of journalistic excellence written like a novel and utterly compelling. It takes you through a painful and depressing period and tells an ennobling tale about those who fought back against the atrocities of Nazi Germany and restored the pride of the Jewish people and made the seminal moves that led to the creation of the Jewish State. I have read a great deal about World War II & the holocaust but I was unaware that Jewish soldiers actually fought in the last battles & were stationed there after the war. I was surprised that this helped their effort to create the nation of Israel by transporting people & weapons to their country. It was both tragic & inspirational to be a witness to the amazing events that transpired to the birth of a new nation. It took courage & desperation to achieve what they did. It was an honor to be a silent witness to this great event.

It outlines the reason why the British formed the brigade, where and how the brigade fought, and its instrumentality in the formation and early defense of the State of Israel. It is very interesting to read of how the Brigade transported many displaced Jews at the end of the war and how the wartime experiences of members of the Brigade caused them to become extremely vengeful and how they overcame their morale dilemma.
