Review

A fascinating book of thirteen small classic quilts made with reproduction fabric, easy to begin and easier to complete. Follow the helpful tips on choosing and using fabric and expert techniques for accurate piecing. With the exception of one quilt, all are less than 36" square, the smallest being 12-1/2" square which is the delightful "Indigo Stars Doll Quilt". You may wish to make "Night Flight", "Sadie's Quilt" or the pretty "Star Flowers and Berries" wall hanging. Which ever one you choose, the instructions, diagrams, techniques and tips are easy to follow and offer countless ways to decorate your home. --Fabrications Quilting for You Magazine, Sept/Oct 2016

About the Author

Jo Morton is a quiltmaker, fabric designer, teacher, author, and lecturer. Her use of color and design, as well as her fine stitchery, give her quilts the feeling of being made in the nineteenth century. Using an antique quilt as a source of inspiration, she creates an interpretation. Her quilts complement both country and contemporary settings, and her work is included in private and public collections across the country. In 1980, Jo took her first quilting class, and in 1985 she created her first "made to look old" quilt. She determined early on that if she ever hoped to make all the quilts she wanted to make, they would have to be small, a size that works perfectly in her compact 1929 bungalow.Jo is well known for her "Jo's Little Women Club" patterns, available through participating quilt shops since 2003. Her quilts have appeared in numerous magazines, and she's made several television appearances: HGTV's Simply Quilts episode 603; PBS's Love of Quilting episodes 1408 and 1805; and The Quilt Show episode 808, which airs on the Internet via subscription.Jo lives in Nebraska City with her husband, Russ, and two kitties, Socks and Chloe. My attention has always been captivated by Jo Morton's fabric lines. But my imagination is flummoxed as to how to use them. The colors and patterns tend toward dark tones and lots of linearity. Even the brighter tea-stained prints can appear more coffee-stained, but without the added creamer. This is not a complaint, as evidenced by the piles of her fabric I've collected over the years. I guess it's just my own personal challenge.Enter Jo's Little Favorites to help combine those Jo Morton prints into lovely diminutive pieces that look pleasingly aged. The smallest finishes at 12.5 inches square. Most of the others have roughly 18 to 26 inch dimensions. Scant quarter-inch seams are used, and Morton is quite clear about what this means. Even though the projects are small, they contain many pieces and many triangles, so accuracy is critical in joining them into blocks and rows. The one "large" outlier is "Double X" at 40.25 inches square. Each of its 25 blocks finish out at 4.5" square. Each square contains 15 pieces. Add sashing strips and center posts and you can see how this small quilt adds up to a hefty project. It is a challenge in accuracy, but it's one of the best examples of how a bevy of dark tones can yield a pleasing effect. There is just one applique quilt. The remainder use traditional blocks like 4-patch, 9-patch, log cabin, courthouse steps, and baskets. The red and white "Bordered Toile" is a single delectable, but tricky, courthouse steps block. It looks easy, but cutting, joining, pressing (and repeating) those 1-inch sashing strips down to .5-inch finished strips can result in unintentional waviness. Any discrepencies in that all-importand scant 1/4 inch SA or deviations from a precisely straight line of stitching will be noticeably magnified.Morton provides lots of tips, and she uses that Flying Geese techniqhe that results in multiple units. Most interesting is she shows the BACKS of many blocks to illustrate a tip or technique. In this way, she shows how clipping into SAs results in a flatter block and how pressing can reduce bulk. The only real difficulty lies in choosing a first project. And deciding whether to splurge on more Jo Morton fabrics. Ah, well, a few clicks, a few "add to carts", and one submit took care of that latter challenge. And I did it while writing this review. Multitasking at its best. Now if I could just get out of my bathrobe, stop clicking "submit cart", and actually get dressed. THAT is hard.

Love all of the patterns, colors, and fabric choices used in this book. Beautiful book with superb photos. There are projects for everyone! Highly recommend!!!

One of her best, I've already made two little quilts from this book and will be making more. As usual, her instructions are clear and the samples inspire.

Like the directions. Easy to follow. Very disappointing that you do not offer yardage to go with your pictures. Miniature quilts are beginning to become more interesting. More of these ideas are needed.

I preordered this book a couple of months in advance....and it did not disappoint! I want to make nearly all of the minis in this book.

This book of little quilts is a little gem. Patchwork is simple, directions are clear and designs are beautiful! Jo hit it out of the park on this book!

Haven't created anything from this book yet, but it has many that are of interest.

As usual, well written........pattern easy to follow, beautiful color pictures.........loved it.
