I like to think I'm fairly well-read when it comes to beer, but I was still fascinated and picked up several new and interesting beer facts. In fact, I teach a beer appreciation course at a local college and I intend to start using the book as my new textbook for the class!Originally published in 2009, this is an expanded and updated 2nd edition. The first two thirds or so of this book was very readable and entertaining, even when describing scientific subjects. The remaining part of the book is filled with information that will take me longer to process, such as information on styles, or does not apply to me, such as descriptions of draft systems and their upkeep. Overall, a very useful book for someone starting their exploration of beer.
This book, Home Brew Beer, Modern Homebrew Recipes, How to Brew, Brewing Classic Styles, and Mastering Homebrew: The Comple Guide are all you need for the rest of your life in homebrewing. Beyond the Pale: The Story of Sierra Nevada is also good while imbibing on a Saturday evening. Cheers! As a side note, I wish we did more with beer engines and casks in the US. Amazon should develop its own Homebrew store, too—I mean really develop it to compete with Northern Brewer and More Beer, but now I’m delving off topic. Cheers!
I have not finished this book yet but I am half way through, I am studying to become a Beer Judge later in the year (BJCP) and this book is a enormous help, so well written and keeps you wanting to read and learn more about the wonderful world of beer, if you are a novice or expert in craft beer it is a must read.
This is one of the best books for anyone who wants to know more about the history of beer along with the history of mankind. I came across this while studying for the level 2 Cicerone exam and it covers off on a good portion of the content from the exam. I bought the audiobook that is narrated by Randy Mosher and it worked out great given the amount of time I spend driving.
The first edition of this book provided an excellent basic education in all that is beer, and this edition just improves on it. This book helped me through the Cicerone Exam -- the book provides not only the basics for the most novice taster, but also some of the most in-depth information that even brewers and advanced tasters will reference on a regular basis. I can't recommend this enough.
This book got me started on the journey to Cicerone training. More of an introduction than anything, Tasting Beer gives you the basic knowledge you'll need to start delving deeper into the world of beer. It perfectly walks the line between in depth and cursory knowledge on each subject, as to leave you wanting more. I definitely recommend to anyone beginning their journey with this delightful beverage.
An excellent companion to his equally excellent volume on Mastering Homebrew. A book on beer from Randy is as safe a bet as a Ballast Point Sculpin if you're looking for an IPA.
