Haven't been there yet but the book was short and sweet. I think it is going to help. If you want a bunch of hotels and restaurants though; this really isn't it...though there are some. For me, it is more of what to do where to go.
The guide was well-written, and included an honest sense of humor. It was a quick and enjoyable read. The only downside, for me, was that I wish the author had shared more details about some of the beach/surf towns as well as San Juan. I would still recommend this book to any PR first-timers.
Length: 121 pages.Up front I want to state that I've twice been to Puerto Rico. Both times while a young sailor aboard the USS Beacon, a patrol gunboat equipped with twin Diesel engines and a jet engine for use in emergencies. But that was in 1971 and 1972, so, what I recollect from then is useless.Further, in 1993 I worked on a Voice of America project in Botswana, Africa on a construction project administered by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Chief Engineer was a Puerto Rican named Rick Alvarez, but I have no clue as to his relationship to this author, Bill Alvarez.I realize that mentioning such is likely a moot point, but feel it could be important in some eyes if Rick and Bill are closely related. It's called full disclosure.Meanwhile, I found the early pages to be of interest to understand some of the history and the culture of the inhabitants of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. I was surprised to learn that English is widely spoken, as my memory of times four decades passed differed. It's good to learn this from the writer.The book then shifts into a discussion of hotel and hostel accommodations, most expensive first, followed by least. Although this portion is not interesting literary fare, it is vitally important and useful.The second half of the book is a discussion of the beaches and points of interest, including a discussion of offshore islands. This portion is equally important and far more interesting for those soon to visit the territory that could soon make a choice of statehood or independence.Interspersed throughout the book are several nice photographs of various points of interest.All in all, this is a good book about Puerto Rico, written with care and the in-depth knowledge of a native of the largest island that is a part of he United States.

Easy to read and informative. Bill Alvarez's guide to Puerto Rico reveals all you need to know to get around and have a pleasant stay at the beach paradise island. Two thumbs way up!
