You’ve looked at this book, and you’re reading this review because you want to start learning the guitar, or you’ve already put your hand to it but You Tube isn’t giving you the info’ you need in a way that flows into a sensible learning progression; yes?Me too.You’ve been reading the Amazon reviews of book after book with things like ‘Beginners Guide’ or ‘10 Easy Steps’ in the title, and so many of them have those worrying few comments like, “This is really too advanced for a beginner”, or, “I suppose some people have different ideas of what a beginner is”, and you’re just not confident about spending your cash despite the other four glowing reviews.I did that; window shopped for hours.In the end I picked, ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’, by Joseph Alexander. The reviews read about right, it didn’t promise that I’d be playing like Yngwie Malmsteen in just ten days (snake oil’s still oily, no matter how pretty the bottle). And too, perhaps I just got sick of searching, but I was given confidence by the number of positive comments on Joseph Alexanders books, and the range of well reviewed books focussing on modern guitar that Mr Alexander had published. I also noticed that the very few negative comments weren’t related to the course content.What a spot of luck. The book is a gem; easy to read, easy to follow with exercises that are genuinely at a beginner level and not discouragingly difficult. More importantly, the true basics are covered: How to hold your instrument; how to hold a pick, how to strum, how to place your fingers on the fretboard and where should your thumb go? All covered quickly and concisely in amongst the other lessons so you can get on with learning to play.I went from having to ask the shop assistant to audition an electric guitar for me because I didn’t know how to get it to make a sound that wasn’t discordant, to being able to put my fingers to about a dozen or so chords without needing to see a chord chart, knowing which chords they actually are, being able to strum several basic rhythmic patterns by seeing the standard notation, getting the basics of reading tablature and first steps towards hybrid picking, all in about 4 weeks at less than an hour a day.Sure, I fumble at chord changes still, but that’ll come with time and practice. I know this because I’m already seeing the improvements in my ability. My rhythm has a way to go before I make it up to just ordinary; I’m always pulling ahead of the metronome. Again, time and practice, but ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’ has given me the knowledge to get this far and the tools to practice with.Along with the book you also get to download a set of audio examples off Mr Alexander’s web site. These small downloads are short and simple, and have real value: I was practicing a strumming pattern on a D major chord the other day, and I thought to myself, “damn, that sounds ordinary; this can’t be right”, a quick play through of the example and, “whoa, that sounds just like when I do it; I must be getting it right. I guess that’s why there aren’t many pop tunes based solely on quarter note D major strums”. It gives a way to check yourself, it gives confidence and somewhere to go if you just need to hear an exercise to pick up what supposed to be happening.You’ll notice that there’s no mention here of picking away learning the notes on each string at the first three or five frets like those particularly dull books the guitar shop guys have in the rack. You know the ones; four weeks later and you can limp through a single string version of Mary Had a Little Lamb because you know how it’s supposed to go, not because you can actually sight read the standard notation you’re staring at while you do it. The ones that come with a free chord chart, but don’t actually progress to making a chord at any time before the book runs out.They sold me one too. I’ll go back to it and give it some attention at some point too. Maybe.Joseph Alexander’s, ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’, is nothing like that; it heads you towards playing music with real world rhythm and chord skills from day one. Sure there are one or two dull lessons, but by the time you finish you’ll actually want to go back and practice those properly, so you can try them out with the more advanced things you’ve learned.Sure, it’s going to be a while before my skill level grows into that Gretsch I bought, but I always knew there was no real way to go from music consumer to music maker over night. This outstanding book of true beginner’s lessons has me squarely on the path though, and hungering for more.Where’s the down side? I want more. I want the next step. Joseph Alexander has other books and that’s where I’ll turn next. Some of the diagrams are a bit of a squint on a Kindle, but they can be coped with and after a short while you don’t really need those tiny chord charts above the notation except as reminders; they’re visible enough for that without any problems (I might add I’m as blind as a bat and wear glasses, so you probably won’t have any trouble).If like me, you’re wanting to learn guitar and don’t know where to start, or aren’t satisfied with the start you’ve made, then ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’ is a great first step that will point you down the right track and get you moving. I thoroughly recommend it. If a middle aged guy with no prior knowledge like myself can do it, then with the help of Joseph Alexander’s book, you can too.

I'm not a beginner by any means, having played during my teens and twenties but falling out of practice in my thirties. Now I'm 39 and have found my passion for the guitar again. This puts me in a unique position, as I know where things are on the fretboard but am out of practice enough that things sounded like garbage whenever I tried to play! I tried a couple of the lesson books I 'used' when first learning, but couldn't stick with them this time either.Enter Mr. Alexander's Beginner's Guitar Lessons. The lessons are broken down perfectly for the new or returning player. Using the techniques he recommends for learning chord grips, fifteen to thirty minutes of practice a day is enough to see, feel and hear results. My chords ring more clearly and buzz and thud less, my changes are smoother, and I'm enjoying my time practice time more as a result. There must be something in Mr. Alexander's writing style, as I'm finding his suggestions to take things slow and always use a metronome easy to follow (where I had no problem ignoring them with other lesson books.. He writes confidently and knowledgeably without talking down to the reader. He is clearly a passionate teacher that wants to help the student succeed with their practice and playing goals.This book was an amazing find. I'm looking forward to finishing the lessons in it - but not too quickly - and studying with some of the author's other titles.Why only four stars? There is one huge omission. A book geared toward new players should definitely stress the importance of tuning the guitar very early on as the first step to a successful practice session. This is a must, as playing the right chord fingering on an even slightly out of tune instrument can make things go from musical to demoralizing mush in no time. So learn how to tune your instrument and/or get a tuner (tons of smartphone apps for this) and always tune your strings before digging into the perfectly sized and paced lessons you'll find here.

You will be gently introduced to the most important beginning chords and transitions between them. The approach used in this book really allows you to build a familiarity with the guitar. Perfect for establishing a strong foundation for further study.Also have to mention that the author is extremely responsive and genuinely answers questions you might have concerning his material.Do yourself a favor and start out with this book. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author

Billy Showell graduated from St Martins School of Art with a B.A. in fashion design, but was irresistably drawn to painting and illustration. In 1993 she set course for a career as an artist and now paints, illustrates and teaches botanical painting at her studio and art clubs in the UK, USA and Australia. She lives in Tunbridge Wells, UK with her husband and two sons. Billy has been awarded five Certificates of Botanical Merit from the Society of Botanical Artists and her first book on watercolour flower portraits has been hugely successful in the UK and abroad. Billy Showell had an eye for both color (in its smallest gradations) and composition. This book in particular shows her incredibly sharp talents. This book is very much a flower painting techniques book. While some 24 pages of basics about painting watercolor 'portraits' of flowers, the majority of the book is made up with step-by-step painting instructions on 40 specific and oft represented wild growing flowers. They include the following flowers: 1) Anemone 2) Camellia 3) Clematis 4) Freesia 5) Blue & Pink Hydrangea 6) Sweet Pea 7) Honeysuckle 8) Magnolia 9) Hybrid Tea Rose ("Rosa") 10) WisteriaAnd 29 other flowers. Her approach to the book is very straightforward yet extremely brilliant in its simplicity. For each new flower of the 40, Ms. Showell gives the palette vertically down the first page naming the colors she will use through the entire painting. Then numbered paragraphs state which colors to use on which parts of the flowers as you paint them onto your paper stock or vellum or whatever as your 'canvas.' Her palette is generous with colors, but not overly packed with colors that are not necessary.Likewise, with her directions she is not verbose, but fluid and intelligent. Painting any of her examples are truly terrific lessons in botanical illustrations. Ms. Showell has a great and wonderful talent and her books are particularly exquisite. I would recommend this book to watercolor painters of flowers in any place in the world. Ms. Showell's advice is universally applicable and wonderfully presented. I would recommend this book to any artist above the age of 14 years or as soon as the artist has a good understanding of light, pigment and coloration.

Billy Showell is an amazingly talented artist and I learned al ot following the tutorials in this book. I wish I had chosen another of her titles, however, as the reach required to get a flower for every letter of the alphabet results in my being totally uninterested in more than half the examples. I also found the colors to be poorly replicated in the book. There was simply no way to replicate the swatches and if you did you would not get the same flowers as in the illustrations. Not sure if this is the result of the printing process or ... ? It did force me to learn much more about mixing and blending as I used my own ideas to get the colors I wanted and then painted the examples. Of the 26 flowers I was only interested in producing about 10.

This book is excellent. There are 40 botanical compositions with step by step instructions in this book. Each composition focuses on a distinctive flower, the watercolors/color mixes are clearly charted, and there are also pencil illustrations you can use to transfer to your watercolor paper to practice with. She uses a fixed number of the same 14 colors throughout the entire book. Unfortunately, the colors are all from Winsor and Newton. If you are a follower of her online classes, she now uses Sennelier which I prefer. So if you do not own Winsor and Newton watercolor paints, or do not want to own them, you'll need to use her color palettes as reference only. She explains up front that her pallette is based on having a warm and cool color for each primary color which she then mixes for a "perfect" primary color, then does the same for secondary colors etc. So, with a basic understanding of color theory, and the ability to recognize a cool vs. a warm red, a cool vs. a warm green etc. then you should be able to find similar colors from whatever brand you prefer.

Another gift for my 91 year old Mother, who's a very good artist. She was amazed at the quality of the demonstrations in this book, and even being once an art teacher herself, she says she will gain a lot of insight from this book for future projects.

Billy Showell is an accomplished artist but she is also an excellent teacher. The two do not always go hand-in-hand. I have two of her books and she really gives the purchaser of her books a solid overview of the skills necessary to master botanical illustration in watercolor. Her videos are also first rate. As a former art teacher, I cannot emphasize enough how good of a teacher and author she is. This book was more than worth the money.

aside from the flower portraits that taught in step by step fashion this book also gives invaluable techniques that are difficult to find even in the best watercolor books. even if your goal isn't to embark upon botanical illustration the technique section makes this book worth the price on its own and I highly recommend it to even the beginning watercolorist.

It's easy for political activists to overlook their own victories. Activists are driven by a bold, transformative vision of change. That vision is indispensable and is the fuel of progress, but it can also encourage activists to adopt a narrative whereby organizers defeat evil and their positive vision of the future comes into existence. But the world is far too ambiguous and chaotic for that narrative; viewing change in those terms leads activists to see their work as resulting only in defeat, which causes burnout and cynicism while discouraging new people from joining a movement. Change is never easy to see and progress never moves on a clear linear path.Solnit outlines a different vision of change, one which is unpredictable, chaotic, improvisational. Total defeats lead to revolutions generations later; technologies produced by militaries become the engine of peace; supposedly lost causes are resumed; a speech to a nearly empty audience sparks a movement. These aren't just idle theories, Solnit provides real-world examples. Solnit interrogates the ambiguities and forgotten histories of movements and finds thousands of victories; some that only changed one person's life, some that overthrew dictators -- but all victories. It's our obligation to find and celebrate these forgotten victories in order to remind ourselves of our collective power to change the world and inoculate ourselves against the despair and cynicism that would lead us to willingly forfeit the collective power that all of human history clearly shows we possess.Solnit's history of activist victories is driven by a theory of hope as a discipline, not a foreign object one does or does not possess. Hope requires action and practice; action requires a belief that the world can be changed; believing that the world can be changed requires a knowledge and respect of history. The chaotic (ridiculous?) nature of the world makes it impossible to ever know the full impact of our actions; believing that actions driven by love can improve the world requires a leap of faith; all of human history indicates that that faith is the only engine of change and that it actively imposes new realities on the world, even if we can't fully predict or understand what those realities will be. That gaping unknown between action and impact is the 'dark' Solnit refers to; darkness like a womb, not depression. Changing the world requires giving up the idea that we'll understand what that change looks like. Absurd? Well... What did the dark look like to an abolitionist resisting slavery in 1814; a woman demanding equal political rights in 1790; an environmentalist opposing new pipelines in 2017?In these catastrophic times with the rise of the far-right, the corporate takeover of our government and media, the existential threat of climate change, and growing wealth inequality, despair and cynicism are easy. Every day corporate power aims to demobilize and alienate us further. Hope has never been a more vital and powerful discipline. Hope is a radical choice; a choice necessary to overcome the crises facing our planet. Solnit reminds us that choosing to practice hope isn't delusional or naive, it's a rational (though difficult) choice that has always been integral to progress. Hope is a choice that burdens us with responsibilities, responsibilities that enrich our lives. Hope requires action. Let's act.

I found this book useful as a way of re-engaging with an activist mindset. Much of what she writes about activism resonated with me, and was a reason I had turned away. So while I don't agree with her on everything, I do appreciate the intellectual entry point into hope for the future.

The introduction is inspiring and is sticking with me months after reading it. While the bulk of this slender book addresses an era several years ago, the act of reading and remembering how past woes have been overcome is in itself an act of hope. Highly recommend to anyone who cares about making change in their community.

i"m not finished reading this book, but it is the second Solnit book I've read, the first being "Men Explain Things to Me." Although, my first reading of Solnit was pointed towards Feminism this volume, "Hope in the Dark," is historical. It looks backward from the Bush Administration. It is pertinent to 2017 because Democratic voters are as depleted by the Trump election as the election of Bush, maybe even more. She uses some terms that have become obsolete for political readers but they are recognizable and easy to translate. I intend to read all of Solnit's books and catch her on Facebook, as well.

Heard a re-interview of the author on PBS radio during a morning-after of the political scene.Easy reading the essays one day at a time, and helped my brain readjust so I can better address situations than just bitch bout them. Thanks, Rebecca!

J. Bastow Wilson was a professor of Botany at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He taught ecology from 1971 until his retirement in 2013, when he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 1997, in recognition of his prominence and global leadership in plant ecology and vegetation science. In 1999 he joined the board of Chief Editors of the Journal of Vegetation Science (including its sister-journal, Applied Vegetation Science), and in 2000 he became the Chair of the Chief Editors until his retirement. In honour of his services to plant ecology, Wilson was made an honorary life member of the International Association for Vegetation Science in 2013. Over the course of his career Wilson made sustained, insightful and significant contributions to our understanding of how plant communities function, with his research published in over 230 scientific papers.

I was shocked at how absorbing this book was to read. Often I couldn't put it down.I didn't expect a book about the most recent iterations of the LA Dodgers to be quite this interesting, but what a beautiful mess that team is. Such an eclectic and discordant mix of talent, wealth, entitlement, immaturity, and insecurity.Year after year, statistical projections predict the Dodgers to be at the very top of the league and then each season unfolds into a melodramatic roller coaster ride for them. Molly Knight's book provides all the most intimate details of these adventures.Starting off with the story of the transition of the LA Dodgers franchise from bankrupt pathetic embarrassment under crook owner Frank McCourt to the financially flourishing Guggenheim ownership regime with lots of behind-the-scenes details, the book (paperback version) covers the period of 2012 to 2015 focusing on the human side of the game without ever drifting into the territory of hero worship or platitudes or cliches. Just lots and lots of fascinating, entertaining stories about very proud and powerful personalities trying to coexist.Knight certainly knows baseball and when she does discuss the play on the field or statistical performance, she handles it adeptly. But the heart of this book is its human stories---the peculiarity of pitcher Zack Greinke, the pouty star outfielder Matt Kemp, paranoid middle man manager Don Mattingly, the loose cannon polarizing rule-breaker Yasiel Puig, the focused and determined superstar Clayton Kershaw, and so much more.The style sometimes reminded me of Dan Okrent's classic book "Nine Innings" in which the description of a single ballgame sets off lengthy tangents detailing the history of this or that player, all the events of their career that led them to that point.My only complaint (a minor one) is that things seem to fade toward the end, as though she wasn't sure how to conclude this great book. I was really hoping for super in-depth detail and discussion of the organization assembling what Knight calls "The Best Front Office Money Can Buy" but felt that section was a little too truncated. That powerhouse front office, an All Star team of former GMs and sought-after execs, is (I think) the most fascinating thing about the current Dodgers and I hoped for more stories about how that all came about and how they managed to function. Was shocked to see Knight mention a few times that the team had missed out on a trade or a signing because the front office was too focused on some other matter. Sounds like exactly what this braintrust was built to avoid and completely contradicting the stories that were coming out during the 2014-15 winter meetings when all the ex-GMs in the front office were wheeling and dealing separately, divide-and-conquer style.But I guess all of that is a story for another book.

I'm a lifetime Dodger fan. first game: about 1960 or 1961 in the LA Coliseum, with my dad and big brother. we sat beyond the left field fence, about 700 feet from home plate. I believe Wally Moon hit a moon shot home run.this was an interesting account of the 2013, 2014, and 2015 season with a lot of inside, locker room and front office stuff that us Dodger fans like but non-Dodger fans will probably not find interesting. Molly Knight confirms that Puig is an arrogant punk, Zach Grienke is a tortured soul (and a great pitcher), Clayton Kershaw really is all that, A.J. Ellis is a bit of a nut, and Hanley Ramirez is talented but clueless.

i really enjoyed this book. It provides an in depth look at the Dodgers transition from embattled franchise under the McCourts to free spending juggernauts under the Guggenheim group. Knight chronicles every step of the way. My one complaint is that it is blatantly obvious that Knight is a Dodger fan. I would prefer a more impartial view, but it seems as though in her view no one associated with the team under the Guggenheim group can do any wrong. Still, a very well written, entertaining book that I highly recommend.

The author has the inside scoop on the "no expense spared" Los Angeles Dodgers and their "win at all costs" ownership group. She shared stories and quotes that I had never heard, and some of her player portraits reshaped my opinions of individuals I thought I knew pretty well. Dodger fans and Dodger haters both will enjoy this book. I dislike the Dodgers and enjoyed the inside accounts of the discord and dysfunction that have periodically plagued this assemblage of high-priced talent. Yet as a baseball fan, I can appreciate the narrative of how the image and fortunes of the franchise were so quickly recast by the new ownership group. The portrayal of Clayton Kershaw will appeal to any baseball fan that appreciates outstanding talent and character.The book probably deserves five stars for entertainment value, but the story lacks resolution. I feel like it was written too soon. We don't know yet whether the Dodgers will become "the best team that money can buy" or if they will become just another expensive disappointment. We should find out soon, maybe even this year. If the author could have followed through to a point of greater resolution, she would have a work of more lasting value.

If one is to write about a couple of seasons in the history of a sports team, you would usually want to have a number of years to separate you from the moment, to add perspective and clarity. Molly Knight didn't have that when writing about the 2013 and 2014 Los Angeles Dodgers, and yet she absolutely killed it. With her detailed reporting and views from behind-the-scenes, Ms. Knight makes you feel like you're right there in the clubhouse as these Dodgers struggle and succeed amidst the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles. In short, if you're a baseball fan in 2016, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

We pre-ordered the book and it arrived yesterday. We couldn't put it down. My 8 year old daughter and her little sister figure skate too, and they train and skate at the same rank and under the same coach Karen used to train with. So we can totally relate to her rink and her coaches.Karen is a talented skater, and it is fun to read what she has to say about her skating life. How she all started it, how she grew into loving the sport, and what I found most amusing into page 60 was how her little brother Jeffrey put down his video games and start training himself. I can't wait to read the rest of how she breaks through and challenge herself even more, and how she deals with all the up and downs in the next chapters to come.This is the first book review ever for me. I am glad I am giving it to Karen, the idol of my girls and mine very own. ❤️

This book was motivating. I was surprised in many ways--of course, at all the experiences and challenges she went through, but also at how short the book is and all the inspiration it gave.About the length--it's 216 pages long, but 45 aren't part of the story--instead, acknowledgments, glossary, and so on. Chapter numbers take up a whole sheet of paper. With there being 17 chapters, a prologue, and an epilogue, that subtracts another 38 pages! The book is only 133 pages of words, and the font is a bit large, too, with there also being brief, simple, and straightforward sentences.As for the inspiration, I know the book was going to be interesting, but I never expected it to be this moving. I honestly felt like pulling out a highlighter as I read some of the strong points the teenager made.After reading this short and simple, yet moving, book, I am more interested in the Olympian. Worth a read.

It deals with the ups and downs of a career most girls can only dream of. Chen's dedication and love for the sport shines through on every page. This is the story from her humble beginnings on skating rinks in California and Taiwan, about her perfectionist and loving mother, and about a shy girl that - through hard work - becomes the fierce competitor and winner on her turf (read: ice). A must-read coming from a champion and role model for anybody interested in sports - not just figure skating. The foreword is by no other than Kristi Yamaguchi!
