The author of this book has an eminent academic background, so I was surprised to find a glaring error early in the book. Dr.Dowling states that anyone who lives to past 80 will eventually get Alzheimer's disease. But it's well established that Alzheimer's disease is a pathological process, not a normal consequence of aging. Indeed, nearly all those who live past ago 100 do not have any signs of Alzheimer's disease, Nor did Jean Calmet, the longest-lived human who lived to age 122. I was very surprised to find such a glaring error by a man who taught neuroscience for over 30 years.

I am writing a review mostly because I am irritated by the lonely 3-star review written to date, which is obtusely, foolishly (pettily?) in error and stubbornly maintained despite comment and correction by the author himself.Also, I have just this morning broken down and ordered a copy of this book and will return my library copy (1/3rd read) because I feel this IS a very valuable book for me to "master" and understand and so I think I need to annotate and scribble in my own copy as I go along.However I am knocking a star off my potential approval because of two problems I am having.Firstly, contrary to all the assertions of the rave blurb reviews, written by Professors Emerita and Emeritus and such, this is NOT an easy book to read. I feel it could have been written more clearly. But, probably, given the deeply complex subject matter, namely the most profound creation (by evolution) in, perhaps, all of the known Universe, such a topic simply cannot be dumbed down beyond a point. So despite my ancient non-Ivy MA (Botany) and my lifelong reading (mainly in physics, cosmology, evolutionary biology and natural history) of the latest scientists and science writers, I am having a fair bit of trouble absorbing the text. It helps, some anyway, to have numerous illustrations of many of the points developed. But there is a lot of jargon to remember and concepts to grasp as one goes along. On bad days, my eyes simply glaze over after a bit. At best I am reading just maybe a score of pages an hour - slow going.Secondly, I am knocking off the 5th star because of the opening sentence, which is simply not (exactly) true: "What makes us human and unique among all creatures is our brain."I had to get over that sentence and give the author the benefit of the doubt in order to proceed and not just close the book. I can scarcely believe it but I THINK the author has gotten out of touch with the most recent studies on the evolution of brains and intelligence. I am not and never will be the expert he is but I have read again and again in recent years (popular literature) that what makes us Homo Sapiens so special is not so much our brain but the discovery of language AND EXTREMELY CRITICALLY our hitting upon CULTURE and cultural memes as THE means to allow us to evolve (culturally, not biologically), literally, without limit (as in potentially infinitely), beyond any other creature on the planet.I would urge the author to read Yuval Herara's "Sapiens" and "Homo Deus" (and David Deutsch's "Beginning of Infinity") and ponder the "cognitive revolution" of some 70,000 years ago whence cometh the utterly vast distinction between humans and ALL other creatures. It was not so much our brains; it WAS so much our discovery, for whatever reason, of culture and later, of agriculture and then of science (the beginning of infinite explanatory power, as Deutsch* asserts) that have gotten us to where we are today.Anyway.I await my copy in the mail. I DO think this book holds essential insights and will leave me a lot smarter about how our brains work and how the heck they could have gotten to this point. Interesting stuff, to understate the case.________________* I still hate his "Many Worlds" interpretation of cosmology/quantum physics but think "Beginning of Infinity" is a must read and, well, pretty amazing.

I write this to counter some very unfair criticism of this book made by earlier reviewers. John Dowling is a highly regarded neurobiologist of the visual system, and has written a serious introduction to the workings of that most wondrous product of Darwinian evolution—the human brain.The book is admittedly not an easy read for the uninitiated, but its serious study will ultimately prove highly rewarding. The number of different components, cell types, and mechanisms involved is astonishing, and yet one gets the impression that the surface knowledge of neurobiology has hardly been scratched yet.Dowling takes us step by step through what is known about the brain and its appendages. He starts with the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the nervous system; the cells involved, how they signal one-another, what molecules are involved, how drugs affect the process., and how the five senses organize their inputs to the brain. Then he outlines the complexity of neural control centers which help organize inputs and outputs, and often the behavioral influences controlled by these centers. Finally, he describes what (little) we know in going from the brain to the mind—language, learning, memory, and finally consciousness. At each stage in the exposition, clinical cases are presented which illustrate how defects in one or another of the various processes may cause problems.The reader is left, finally, to wonder at the remarkable progress achieved thus far in neurobiology, and also at the multiple hints of how much further the science of the brain has yet to go.

Overall, Seductive Interaction Design manages to be both informative and entertaining, proving Anderson can make full use of the tricks of the trade even when his technological medium is old-fashioned paper.

Stephen Anderson does an excellent job introducing the questions that we ask ourselves when we visit a website, open software, buy physical products, and gravitate toward certain people. The book's psychological approach to explaining the catalysts and triggers of human behavior is thorough and provides good examples of how to use those triggers to create a lasting and impressionable experiences. There are 25 chapters which are grouped into four sections...see section descriptions or skip to the bottom line.Section one (Aesthetics, Beauty, and Behavior) covers topics like gestalt principles/psychology, perceived affordances, product credibility and personality, affect, cognition, and association. Anderson makes plenty of references to other quintessential UX books such as Designing with the Mind in Mind by Jeff Johnson, Visual Thinking for Design by Colin Ware, and Emotional Design by Donald Norman. Section two (Playful Seduction) covers ways to engage audiences with positive affective states such as humor, the mystique of unexpected behavior, and `delighters'. Anderson also uses specific phenomenon such as the information gap theory to explain alternate methods of eliminating the feeling of deprivation in users seeking information. Section three (The subtle Art of Seduction) covers some of the covert ways that our behavior is influenced by revealing topics such as the endowed progress effect, default options, and the many interfaces that offer suggestions such as Twitter's `Who to follow'. Topics such as loss aversion were clearly outlined and empowers users to be more aware of the influences we encounter while online. Section four (The Game of Seduction) takes a gamification approach to explaining the intrigue of certain user experiences. Anderson explains the power of `fun' by introducing the elements of game design (challenges, choices, and conflicts)BOTTOM LINEThis book provided so many examples and references that even a proficient UX specialist would learn something new or easily be referred to other helpful sources of information. Rarely have I found so much information packed into such a short book. I highly recommend the book for newcomers to UX, but I also encourage experienced practitioners to grab a copy for reference.

This is a helpful book for people begining to read about ux and game design. No new insight, it's only a summary of other popular books and research. It serves more as a pitch to the author's deck of cards summarizing the jist of this book. The book of lenses by Jesse Schell is more useful in terms of game design and there are a ton of more useful books in terms of behavior; made to stick, hooked and persuasion are just a few mentioned in this book.

I'm not a UX expert, but rather a web developer with a huge desire to take an existing interface and make it more compelling to users. For me, this book was exactly what I needed, because it helped me to better understand the psychological triggers that lead to delight and encourage us to come back for more.For other developers who've maybe read or try to adhere to the concept of 'don't make me think', this should be the next step along the path to understanding and growing your audience. While an interface that is functional and unobtrusive is great, this book will teach you how make your experience one that will leave a lasting positive impression on its users.

Although there were nice recommendations in some of the topics, I felt I got more out of reviews from source websites and the dollar amount on hotels and restaurants was way off. This book definitely caters to travelers with money to burn. I think I prefer Eyewitness travel books because I love the color photos and the attention to architectural details and self guided walking tours.

I love Fodor's Travel Guides. I buy them any time that I can when traveling. This is my third or fourth travel guide and it didn't disappoint. It contains all the information I needed to have a great trip in New York. I realize that much of this information is online and I usually go check that out but Fodor's gives me a place to start. I try to make it to most of the Fodor's Choice locations and am never disappointed.

 This is perfect and includes all Burroughs also restaurant reviews, where to stay, what to do with kids, detailed reviews of landmarks and a pull out map.

I bought this for my upcoming trip to NYC with my daughter. I have never been and this looks like it will be great helping me plan where we want to go. There are a million choices for literally everything so this should help me narrow it down to the good places so we can get the most out of our trip. I'll update after our trip

Guide is divided up by location, so wherever you go, you have detailed information on what to see, where to eat, and how to get there. Spent hours going through the guide before we left home. I bought several different guides before taking this trip. This book was by far the best! Worth every penny...

Packed a lot of helpful information into one book including transportation tips, etc.Got a good sense of the differences per neighborhood that helped with which ones to target.Restaurant recommendations - along with Hotel, etc. were at the end of the book instead of integrated with the neighborhood - which caused me to jump back and forth.The detachable map was helpful as I could highlight restaurants and then hand-write in ones that were at the end of the book (so when I get hungry, I have a quick snap shot of what is nearby).

Wife borrowed Fodor's from library - she liked the book info - going to New York in July with our daughter. Very fast delivery-product in good condition.

I have used different guides for different trips but I always come back to Fodor's. Good summaries of the main attractions, lots of food and hotel recommendations, contains a great map to take with you while you are exploring, and general practical tips. If it's missing anything, it is probably the lesser-known attractions. If you are going for a short trip and just want to see the highlights, this is all you need. If you are going for a long trip and want to see some more unusual things, you might want to pick up a second guide, maybe a Lonely Planet.

I would give this book 5 stars if all of the ingredients in the recipes were listed. There are several recipes that list ingredients in the directions but not quantities in the ingredient list. Hard to make a recipe correctly with missing ingredients. Disappointed that I paid $30 for a small paperback that is missing key items.

Law school is a WHOPPING big decision. This book (along with several others) helped me decide NOT to go - and I've not regretted the decision. While there are other books like this, this one was one of the better ones (I read almost a dozen).

Comprehensive book

Having had a chance to meet the talented Mr. Niewoehner during one of his recent autograph session/book reading at my local Jimbo's Bookwormania, I must confess that I was overwhelmed by is wonderous outlook on life and on law school. I found him, much like his book, to be an inspirational journey into legalistics. I, too, would someday love to attend that institution of institutions, Harvard Law School, and I believe that reading Mr. Niewoehner's book twice or perhaps even three times will start me in the right direction. It is, indeed, what I like to call a "must read" for the lawyers of the future!Yusuf Paradisi

I thought the book, notably the law school section, was superbly researched and written. A true must-read for anyone considering law school and a legal career.Currently attending a top law school myself, I thought some of the earlier reviews characterizing the book as "generic" or "common" were way off the mark and likely written by dumb poo-poo heads who went to state schools.

Agree with previous reviewers this is a total ripoff. I didn't check the reviews before purchasing because my minecraft-loving son really wanted it. We have other hard-cover handbooks and thought this would be a nice add to the collection. It is not. Compared to the classic hardcover handbooks, this one is 1)paperback 2) 40% more expensive, 3) less than half the page count 4) font size is 3 times bigger, 5) spacing (white space) is more than double, and 6) only black and white.It looks like the publisher just turned on a photocopy machine and churned out copiesI can only hope that there are "secrets" in this "handbook", but as a paying parent, this is complete ripoff.

Do not buy. This is not authentic minecraft book. It looks like something my fourth grader could have made by herself. It is a very thin, black and white,lage print, short book full of information that anyone who is already a minecraft player will already know. It does not contain any useful secrets of the game. I paid more for this than I did for the official good quality book and am extremely upset with the quality and contents of this "book". I wish I could just return it but shipping it back just isn't worth it financially.

This "book" is seriously a joke. I skimmed through this book that I purchased for my nephew's birthday to find that the font is massive. Then I noticed that the grammar is horrendous throughout. The printed black and white pictures are distorted. I will be contacting Amazon to request a return. There is no excuse for this being an item for sale, especially $9.99! I'm extremely disappointed and hope others will read the reviews before purchasing. That was my mistake. I won't be making the same one, that's for sure!

FAKE!! this had to be copied off a scanner or something. its cheap nothing secret about it!

Poor quality. Basically the entire book is photocopied. "Color" illustrations are horrible and look all black. Waste of money. If I could give zero stars, I would.

Bought this as a gift for a 9 year old. I was surprised when I opened it to find something that looks like it was run off on a home copier (in black and white) with brief captions done on on a computer. Very elementary. I went to the book store and bought two beautiful, hard back books with glorious easy to see pictures with good explanations for just a little more. This book was a huge disappointment. Maybe it was written for a 5 year old. Keep looking. I do NOT know why this is a top seller. Maybe others feel as I do: I should return it, but it isn't worth the hassle.

A detailed but somewhat dry text on Australia's economic history. Tracing from the enforced convict labour of the early days to 2010. Few personalities enter into this narrative. Rather, the authors study why over the decades and 2 centuries, the standard of living rose to one of the best in the world. Exceeding in fact Britain's after world war 2.Readers who are already aware that Australia has had 24 years of growth to date [2015] might want to peruse this text for a look further back. The resources of the continent are vast and by good luck Australia has largely had competent government. Largely avoiding the resource curse that caught countries like Brazil and Nigeria.

This book does a very good job at providing an overview of Australia’s economic history and development. It covers Australia’s economic history from the era just before the English and Europeans arrived to the previous decade (2000s). It not only provides a very good historical narrative of this period but also answers quite a few questions that readers may have regarding Australia. For example, why despite Australia’s mineral wealth were no other important sectors of the Economy such as manufacturing deeply (and negatively) impacted through what economists call “Dutch Disease” (damage resulting from currency appreciation due to very favorable balance of payments)? Answer: despite the mineral wealth it still, historically, amounted to relatively small percentage of aggregate economic activity (unlike, say, the oil sector in the gulf states). This is not to say there were not negative impacts. These came through different channels. In particular through the impact in the labor short market (i.e., raising incomes). The book also answers the question of why the presence of such mineral wealth did not lead to the growth of related industries like in the US and Canada? In those countries, for example, the discovery of large iron ore depots lead to the development of significant steel production. In Australia, on the other hand, large iron ore deposits did not lead to the production of steel on a large scale. Answer: Australia, unlike the US, did not have a large population (and hence market) for steel, it was located far from international markets and Australia did not have a transportation infrastructure, especially natural, that facilitated cheap transportation of iron ore to population centers. US iron ore deposits in Duluth, MI, for example, could be easily and cheaply transported to Chicago for transformation into steel and distribution to other parts of nation thanks to that city’s status as a major rail hub. The situation was different in Australia.The book also does an excellent job (5 star here) of serving as a literature survey of the Australian economy. The author does an excellent job at summarizing nearly all this literature in a very coherent manner.This is not to say that the book does not have some minor weaknesses. One is that it is a bit dry. However, considering that it is a book published by an academic press and a professor, this is no surprise. A more serious weakness is that the book is, ironically, weak at discussing the impact of Australia’s mineral wealth and mineral exports on the economy over the past decade or so (at least compared with the historical past). These exports have definitely increased dramatically over the past few decades, as even the author admits, but there is not an in-depth analysis or discussion as to how this has impacted the economy recently (as opposed to historically). There is also little discussion as to what can be done to try to mitigate the problem.Nevertheless, despite these relatively minor weaknesses the book provides a very good overview of Australia’s economic development as well as an excellent literature survey of the topic. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the topic.
