Amazing book for the defense of Christ. Really helped solidify my faith back in the day, and would recommend to anyone, believer or skeptic or atheist. Great book to come back to for some apologetics learning.

Lee Strobel's "A Case for Christ" was highly instrumental in leading me to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior. Coming from a scientific background, I was also skeptical about this whole "religion thing". However, the methodical scientific approach and evidence he discovered in his search for the truth, convinced me it is far more logical to place my faith in Jesus than not. I can do nothing but highly recommend this book and the movie if you are searching for the truth about Jesus Christ.

Lee was an Atheist, and his wife, an Agnostic. What makes this book so interesting, even as a believer, is the fact that Lee, former legal editor for the Chicago Tribune, embarked on a 2 year investigation into the reality of Christ. Was Jesus who He said He was? Did He really exist in the flesh? Are the biblical accounts just made up? Were there eye witness testimonies to miracles that supposedly happened through Jesus? Can groups of people maintain eye witness accounts without those stories becoming totally altered after passing down through even the first 20 people let alone generations? The really great thing about Lee's "investigation" was that he set out to prove that his wife, who became a believer, and all the rest of us, were caught up in a huge scam. Experts in the fields where Lee's questions could be addressed were engaged in this quest. This book is not fiction! Also, the movie, if you see it, does a great job of summarizing the whole investigation, and you get to "meet" those who were called on to fully answer Lee's questions, and they are not actors.

It's hard to rate this book with only 5 stars. I was raised a Mormon. After leaving the cult due to the Mormon inconsistencies and contradictions I found myself in a state of limbo. I didn't know what to believe. I knew that a God existed but wasn't sure if it was the Christian God, the many many Hindu gods or maybe some deity that was unknown and impersonal. The Case for Christ was a critical look at Christianity from the perspective of an atheist. Lee Strobel left no stone unturned. He tackled the historicity of the person Jesus, the resurrection account, miricals and every objection to which I wanted answers.

Well written and logical. A must for anyone investigating the validity of the claims of the Gospel.

I am a christian. My parents were born again long before I was born. My father was immensely and I mean it, immensely transformed after receiving christ. We prayed three times a day, and I was a firm beleiver in Christ simply by reading the bible and listening to men of God. Mama always spoke vividly about the Kingdom yet to come. It is the happiest time of my parents lives, speaking about Christ. I therefore knew christ without reviewing the evidence. Reviewing the evidence in this book has given me a new drive and commitment to the cause and now I am altogether stronger and better grounded. I wish I had read this book years ago! I would definately have had better use of my time witnessing for christ.

Author Lee Strobel makes the statement quoted above at the end of this book. To him, the witness of the Spirit to us through an encounter with Christ is the ultimate confirmation of the truths proposed and taught by Christianity. Before this, he spends 14 chapters in the book looking at common objections some people present for why they do not believe that Jesus is truly God as Christians believe. Strobel--who was once himself a nonbeliever/atheist--refutes the objections and is convinced that the objections are baseless. His arguments convinced me, too, but not all of the chapters were as important to me as the others. We all come to acceptance or rejection of Jesus as God from different places, and unless we are set in our thinking against the truth of Christian revelation, it seems to me that at least some of Strobel's reasons should prove to be persuasive. I have known people, however, who are so set in their opposition to accepting the divinity of Christ that I doubt this book (or any others) will make a difference. (I had a friend in college who was so wounded by life while a child that he turned against God in anger and identified as an atheist. He refused to consider any arguments for Christ and the Church and had build up a wealth of reasons why he was correct.)This book should also be helpful to those who already believe in Christ because it presents many arguments and reservations by those opposed to belief in Christ. Knowing the arguments and sensible reasons against them can help Christians understand those opposing Christ and gives believers understanding of how to counter those arguments.I agree with Strobel about the importance of the Spirit revealing the truth to us. While I was somewhat catechized and taught about Christian truths as a child (as much as a post-Vatican II child could be!) and didn't have great objections to belief, my faith was not deep and wasn't really important to me. Confirmation of my belief came to me as I encountered Christ though Scripture, prayer, the Church and sacraments (especially the Eucharist), and the community of believers. My now long pilgrimage in seeking to know Christ and understand him has led to deeper faith and a more joyful experience of it. Over time, indifference and questions I once had melted away. At times the "melting" was quite rapid; at other times, quite slow. But I persevered and my pilgrimage continues and enriches my life more as time passes. And I think that through me, my faith is also enriching the lives of others too. As Sister Pat says, "Thank you, Jesus."

A must read for anyone with doubts.

Goblins and Snowflakes is the part charming, part creepy retelling of The Elves and the Shoemaker. The charming part is the actual fairy tale retelling. The creepy part pertains to the goblins who provide the magic to make the fairy tale. The novella length story is perfect for a couple hours of escape to the quaint village of Twickenham for a little adventure and a little romance. Every time I read another of Ms. Karsak’s steampunk fairy tales, I want to read more. Within Goblins and Snowflakes are some ties to other characters in Karsak’s steampunk stories, notably for me, the beginning of the Red Cape Society of the Steampunk Red Riding Hood series. Despite those ties, Goblins and Snowflakes is a standalone and can be enjoyed in all types of weather.

What a surprise gem I found in this novella. I was enchanted from the first chapter. I loved Scarlette and the steampunk aspect as well as the fairy tale aspect. I'm very pleased to have discovered this author and I'm looking forward to reading more!

A wonderful story, and the perfect timd of year to read it! I thought the characters were very enchanting! This is the first book I've read of Melanie's, and I shall definitely be purchasing more! If you love fairy tales and magic, this book is for you!

Melanie Karsak has created a steampunk universe where historical figures, like Horace Walpole, interact with fictional ones, and where — hallelujah! — women have career options and are treated with the same respect as men (at least by the men who matter.) It makes for a particularly delightful escape fantasy. This installment takes place a generation or so before the Clemeny (Little Red Riding Hood) series, and tells the story of how the Red Cape Society came into being, in a plot loosely based on the fairytale of the Elves and the Shoemaker, mashed up with Christina Rossetti’s poem, The Goblin Market. Our heroine, Scarlette Rossetti, the “niece” of Horace Walpole, is a natural tinker, and it is her work on the dolls at the local toy shop, to help out the proprietors, that drives the plot forward.Throw in some magic, goblins, a handsome young genius romantic interest, and the Rude Mechanicals, all in the few days leading up to Christmas, and the plot thickens and tension mounts. The best part is that Scarlette manages to save the day with only minimal help—it’s more of a team effort; no “damsel in distress” rescuing required. AND [SPOILER ALERT!] I love that the Red Cap Society owes its name to her!All in all, another delightful jaunt through Karsak’s magical steampunk universe. More! More!

I love these novellas from Melanie. Every time I read one I never want to leave. If you have read any of her other Steampunk Fairy Tales, you will love this. If you have not this is a great place to start as this happens before a lot of the other books. Scarlette is a great character with a big heart and a brilliant mind. Archie is a perfect match for her. It was also nice to get a pick inside R.M. as you only get a glimpse from the outside in the other books, you get more of inside look in this book. You also see how the Red Caps come to light.*I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.*

I really don't think you can get better then this author for amazing, safe, and fun reads. I loved this story based on the Elves and the Shoemaker. It was such a fun retelling. I loved the way the main character, Miss Scarlette Rossetti, was both intelligent, caring but also adventurous. Her heart was so big and it made the story that much more enjoyable. I loved the holiday spirit that was involved, but also the Goblins! It introduced the reader the the creation (in part) of the Red Cape Society, but only gave enough that I will need more. I also really enjoyed the town description and the hint of romance. I have never wanted to be a part of story as much as I am with this author works. Strong and fun characters makes this story worth reading.Any reader can start with this story and understand it without having read any previous stories. I look forward to reading more from Scarlette and Archie in the future. They could definitely keep me engaged for many more books to come (hint, hint...)! I received and ARC and am leaving an honest review.

I love Scarlette Rossetti, the heroine in Melanie Karsak’s Goblins and Snowflakes, and the marvelous steampunk universe that the novel inhabits. This is a wonderful holiday treat with a perfect plot and really beautifully crafted cast of characters. Truly enjoyable and just what any steampunk fan needs for the holiday season. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

Oh my! Talk about a walk on the wild side. I loved this little jewel. This is one exciting, action packed, fast paced, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning bombshell that's as riveting as it is captivating. All the twists and turns, unexpected circumstances and unpredictable surprises around every corner make for incredible experience. The drama, mystery, magic and suspense steadily increases and tension thickens keeping you frozen to your seat and sole focus on the pages. Melanie created a world around us until everything else ceases to exist. The characters are well developed, complex and believable with such depth you feel like your part of the tale instead of on the sidelines. Melanie has such a vast and varied insight as she graphically describes each scenario as they play off one another in a perfect balance. Melanie did a remarkable job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Incredible job Melanie, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.I received a review copy of this story.

#561,667 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

We learn from other readers' comments that it has been distilled from 800 pages down to 200. There are some significant flaws that could and should have been fixed in this heavy-handed editing. Despite all that, the gems of thought in this book are bright enough to shine through some plodding and repetitive prose.Zimmerman describes a universal progression of family organization from the "trustee family" through the "domestic family" and finally the "atomistic" family" in three separate eras: classical Greece, Rome, and contemporary Western civilization. In the broadest terms, in a "trustee family" the current generation is seen as only a trustee for an entity that exists for all time. The trustee family fills the roles that will be taken over by the church and state at higher levels of civilization. Specifically, the trustee family administers its own justice, fights its own wars, and keeps family members in line. Trustee families existed until recently in the feuding Kentucky hills, and they are our plague as America fights in Afghanistan and Iraq. The "domestic family" is the bedrock of traditional civilization, a mother, father, and children who view themselves as integral parts of a civilization: church, state, civil society, and a family structure. The key feature of a domestic family is a commitment to bearing and raising children. The motive may be somewhat economic -- children are certainly useful in an agricultural setting -- but it is equally religious. The parents of a domestic family feel an obligation, usually religious, to bear and her children, and the society reinforces the message that children should obey their parents. The church's call is to "proles, fides, sacramentum" or children, fidelity, and the sacred. Zimmerman goes on at length about the ways in which the Protestant Reformation, the counterreformation, the Enlightenment and then the English, French, and Russian revolutions undermined the domestic family. The "atomistic family"evolves when civilization reaches a high plateau, in which a wealthy, literate class emerges. These intellectuals are skeptical of received wisdom, especially religion, and dedicate themselves to the pursuit of individual pleasures. The morality which held the domestic family together comes to be held in contempt. The individual reigns supreme, and the traditional constraints on divorce, abortion, adultery, homosexuality, all forms of what is otherwise considered sexual but privately, and of course childlessness fall away. The worthier citizens feel they have better things to do with their time than raise children, and the society has to depend on immigration and the fertility of minorities to replenish itself. The move from country to city is part and parcel of the transition from the trustee family through the atomistic family. The apparatus of government works best in urban environments. Children are an outright burden -- they cannot help support the family, and they cost money to feed, clothes, and educate. Government in urban areas is able to promise to support people -- free bread in Rome, free health care in modern Western societies -- in exchange for their tax money and a surrender of freedom. In every exchange the government borrows against the future. When there are enough people without children, that is, with no stake in the future, the government promises are less subject to critical analysis.Zimmerman was well schooled in the classics, and I am grateful to him for several obscure sources. The Latin lawyer Modestius wrote that law's function is to "command, forbid, punish and allow." That sounds like a good synopsis of modern American government's attitude, whether Republican or Democrat. He provides interesting opinions on the writings of Plutarch, Erasmus, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Hume and others, from his unique perspective of family sociology. He provides some examples of retrogression. Progress got ahead of itself in the French and Russian revolutions, during which divorce at will became the standard, and after which the autocrats -- Napoleon and Stalin -- felt obliged to reinforce marriage so they would have some soldiers. Zimmerman was very pessimistic about the United States of 1947, failing to see the emerging baby-boom which would postpone his dire predictions by a quarter century.Still, however, after that quarter century the 1960s delivered every horror that he had predicted, and the ensuing decades have not diminished the plight of the family. The United States depends on massive immigration, legal and illegal, from the precise group that Zimmerman predicted -- Hispanics. Europe likewise depends on Muslims. Unlike our previous generations of immigrants, and those which populated Rome for five centuries, these appear unlikely to become assimilated into the dominant culture. They may indeed repopulate America and Europe, but they will not reproduce its culture.Zimmermann expressed a wan hope that his Harvard intellectuals would finally figure it out and embrace familism. We can say conclusively that that has not happened. Failing that, he projected that a religious revival would be necessary. We see something of a religious revival in the red state/blue state dichotomy. The one is somewhat Christian, the other scoffs at such primitive credulity. And there is mankind's problem. Thinking minds have difficulty embracing religion, but without religion we die out. A sweet dilemma.I'll close with a practical note on the book's shortcomings. For all that it is abridged to one fourth its original size, it is quite repetitive. The index is absolutely terrible -- most of the quoted authors and Latin terms to not appear in it. The essays by the conservatives do not add much. All that said, enough brilliance seeps through that I still give this book a very high rating.

Wonderful history, wow what an eye opener. Seems as though this should be a must ready for our representatives. Their policies, although with good intent continue to destroy the family.

Superb book - fast shipping. Very very nice.

It's amazing how far we as a sound country have drifty. This book is a well read type and enhances the importance of cherishing the value of family: between one man and one woman.

This book really gives you a great look into civilizations and how they would put family first to raise up their culture then when they are on top they allow for things like homosexuality and abortions into their civilizations and they collapse it has happened several times throughout history. We as western civilizations need to be cautious to this and not fall into the same pattern as past civilizations. Highly recommended read very informative.

This book captures what most all seem to fail to realize - that people NOT wanting to have children is the demarcation line for a civilization's demise. The history set forth in this magnum opus is so little spoken of. You will not be able to put the book down.

A superb survey of the family across history. I understand the full multi-volume edition is still out of print, but this abridged version is plenty scholarly, and very readable. It's important to remember while reading that this was written in the 1940s - and to realize how many of his predictions have come true!

Excellent.

This book is rather short at 172 pages. Its a Hewlett Packard sponsored book from around 1996. And it kind of reads like a sales guide or executive briefing on the three major PC Network file sharing services.Appletalk, Netware and LanManager from the three major vendors of the time [ Apple ][ Novell ] and [ Microsoft/IBM ]The author writes in a somewhat "amused" style from the Ivory Tower of a UNIX user. Each is treated like a foreign entity he likes to call a "NOS Program" adopted as a "UNIX process" that has a bilingual translator built in to handle file sharing services across the network. The goal of the book seems to be to provide a little history and perspective, and reasons why you would want to connect PC's to your powerful mainframes running UNIX.And finally a chapter that really seems to be a private joy to explain, the difference between Ethernet and IEEE 802.3, hint they're not the same.. and one preceded the other. This isn't a book about programming, code, or specifications. More a general discussion of history, values and over view of how things work and some encouragement to help a decision maker choose one of the "NOSes" over the other when choosing which of the "PC's" to support connecting to the big UNIX server.

The supply list and 50 painting tutorials in "Learn to Paint" are ideally suited to intermediate painters ready to loosen up, work a size larger (1/4 sheet), and increase their color vocabulary.WHAT I LIKED:1. The master supply list for the paintings as well as Freeborn's sketchbook kit is presented as a series of flat lay photographs with a list right at the beginning of the book. Will explains in several cases how his kit is streamlined to his work flow.2. Brief descriptions of common watercolor techniques with photos are given in the first chapter. I found this particularly helpful because my palette, techniques, and tools vary a bit from his.3. The paintings increase in difficulty from lessons 1-50 with new skills added sequentially.4. Will's lessons cover every major subject of representational painting: still life, landscape, cityscape, animals, figures, and portraits. This is an unusually wide scope for a single book.5. Each lesson is presented on a single two page spread. I found this format easy to use.~A gray sidebar listed the materials and palette colors needed for each piece at a glance.~Goals and techniques for each lesson are stated in the lesson title and then expanded in a single tightly written paragraph.~Five thumbnail progress photos with 2-3 sentence captions each guide you through each step from sketch to completed painting. These lessons are not the comprehensive, stroke-by-stroke type found in either beginner or advanced technique books, which I appreciated.~A final 1/4 size completed painting is included at the end of each lesson for reference.6. Freeborn provides dozens of little tips throughout the book that are usually the kind of instruction you receive in a live class as an offhand comment by the teacher.7. The palettes for each piece are sophisticated, elevating even the simple everyday subjects in beginning lessons.WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:1. I docked a single star even though I loved this book because the cover indicated it was aimed at "newbies." A brand new watercolor beginner would be unlikely to invest in the supplies listed or be able to understand many of the lessons in this book. The pieces included also require a solid set of drawing skills.2. I felt the United States publisher missed an opportunity to reach a large community of painters who have mastered basic techniques and are actively looking for material to continue growing their skills without specializing into a single advanced technique.2. Every single piece of art calls for a 10 x 14 watercolor block, even though many of the finished pieces are shown in square or landscape format.3. Learn to Paint, like many other UK art books I already own, felt like valuable author content shoehorned into a publisher template by someone who hadn't read the author's material. I had the same disconnect I used to get as a child when an illustrator gave a character in a book the wrong color hair or eyes.CONCLUSION:For an intermediate painter, 30 cents a lesson is an extraordinary value! I have admired Will Freeborn's work for several years and am excited to own a book that not only reveals his tools and work flow, but also seeks to teach his skills. If you are truly a "newbie", save this book in your wish list for after you've learned the bare bones of watercolor. It won't be long before you want to loosen up, paint larger pieces, and have the confidence to pick a palette that enhances and elevates your subject.

I know that the only way to improve my painting is to paint. A lot. But I struggle with knowing what to paint. Faced with that blank sheet of paper, my mind goes blank, too. It's a weird hurdle to get over. So I went looking for a book of painting prompts and found this. It works very well for what I want. The instruction is a bit odd in that it expects you will find your own subject matter but then instructs you in how to paint what the author painted. It takes a bit of mental translation. Instead of saying "When I painted my shoes, I used a light wash of Payne's Gray" (which is helpful just to know how the author got the effects he did), the author says "1. Find a pair of shoes to paint. 2. Use Paynes's Gray" which is weird if your shoes are purple. Basically, it's just enough information to get me started, so I don't feel like I'm floundering too much, even though it does require some interpolation unless you just want to copy his paintings. Copying is a valid choice if you are just looking for practice and not presenting it to the public as a completely original work.So far, I've done the first seven paintings.

This is an excellent review of watercoloring basics by a renowned illustrator and sketchbook guru. The scope of the book is very broad and it touches on a wide range of technical issues. See list of chapter contents, below. This volume is highly recommended for watercolor beginners seeking an accessible guide to the medium. It is also recommended for watercolor enthusiasts who want to see a compilation of Wil Freeborn's work along with his insights about watercolor painting and strategies to deal with its technical challenges.CHAPTER CONTENTSChapter 1: Getting StartedBasic KitChoosing you colorsColor mixingPaperWashesColor, light, and atmostphereHow to keep a sketchbookChapter 2: Simple Still LifesLively washesBackgrounds for still lifesWorking with a minimal paletteArranging a simple still lifeBasic drawing for watercolorGet confident with colorCompose as you goWatercolor with pen and inkSight sizingQuick watercolor sketchHard edgesChapter 3: LandscapesCreating dynamic contrastWashes for atmosphereSimple wash with gradationCreating a sense of distanceMasking areas of white paperBright colors in landscapesIdeas for compositionBold shapesFinding interesting shapesPure texture and subtle washesWorking with one colorReserving colorsTelling storiesAbstract patternsChapter 4: CityscapesSimplifying what you seeExploring granulationSparkling sunlightSymmetry and proportionPainting multiple buildingsPerspective for beginnersBuilding up a complex sceneFinding your interpretationIntroducing a sense of scaleChapter 5: AnimalsGrouping subjectsEditing outExpressing brushworkPainting a museum specimenPainting live animalsWorking from photosThree-color washesPainting a marine subjectLandscapes with wildlifeChapter 6: Figures, portraits, peopleAdding figures to landscapesSimplifying peoplePainting quickly in situGrisailleCapturing movementMixing Media

a terrific new watercolor book! Beautifully and clearly designed. Lots of new watercolor material to discover here. Perhaps for the more advanced watercolorist but worth buying whatever stage you're at. Love the double spread of all his moleskine sketchbooks on pages 26-27 (16 of them!). This artist doesn't sleep. Very specific details and watercolor tips included. Will you succeed in painting like Freeborn by the conclusion? Probably not and maybe a good thing. Will you have learned a lot of new valuable material? Definitely yes! Highly recommended to all serious watercolorists.Thank you Wil for a beautiful book.

No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive (Series Q)

From Publishers Weekly

Queer theory, a fairly recent academic discipline, has been commonly used as an analytic tool to deconstruct literature, film and art, although writers such as Judith Butler and Michael Warner have also applied it to philosophy and sociology to subvert accepted concepts of the "normal." EdelmanÂ’s slim volume takes this idea further than anyone else to date. Arguing that the traditional Western concept of politics is predicated on making the future a better place and that the accepted—literal as well as symbolic—image of the future is the child, he states that "queerness names the side of those not ‘fighting for the children.Â’ " Edelman argues that homosexualityÂ’s perceived social threat has to do with its separation from the act of reproduction, yet, he says, this non-reproductive capacity must be embraced as a social good. He illustrates his provocative stance by analyzing numerous cultural artifacts—Alfred HitchcockÂ’s The Birds (why do the birds keep attacking children?); A Christmas Carol (he favors Scrooge over Tiny Tim); the musical Annie (with its hit song "Tomorrow")—and by discussing the theories of post-modern writers such as Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Zizak, Jean Baudrillard and Barbara Johnson. While Edelman also focuses on recent events—the murder of Matthew Shepard, the bombing of abortion clinics, the Catholic ChurchÂ’s sexual abuse scandal—most of his book is densely written and theoretical. This is a notable contribution to post-modern theory, but EdelmanÂ’s knotted, often muddled writing will limit his readership to hard-core academics and students of post-modern thought.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. “The book represents a rigorous attempt to think at once generatively and against tropes of generation, to work at once in irony and in earnest to demonstrate the political’s material dependence on Symbolic homo-logy.”Whether we decide to follow Edelman’s example of rejecting the future or vehemently react against his polemic, No Future leaves no doubt that we cannot get around thinking critically about the uses and abuses of futurity.“The book represents a rigorous attempt to think at once generatively and against tropes of generation, to work at once in irony and in earnest to demonstrate the political’s material dependence on Symbolic homo-logy.” - Jana Funke, thirdspace"One of the great virtues of Edelman's thesis is that it restores the distinction between queerness and homosexuality per se. Edelman goes some way to returning the uncanniness attached to queerness which has been dispelled by the very signifier 'gay' and the cosy, Kylie-loving, unthreatening cheeriness with which it has become associated." - K-Punk"This is a book, I confess, that I would love to have written. Angry, eloquent, precise, beautifully composed, funny, over the top, and very smart, the four chapters . . . articulate a controversial and disturbingly persuasive figural and rhetorical diagnostic of a moment in U.S. political life." - Carla Freccero, GLQ“Edelman has certainly articulated a new direction for queer theory, making No Future required reading both within the field and beyond.” - Andrea Fontenot, Modern Fiction Studies“The book represents a rigorous attempt to think at once generatively and against tropes of generation, to work at once in irony and in earnest to demonstrate the political’s material dependence on Symbolic homo-logy.” - Carolyn Denver, Victorian Studies“No Future is a nuanced polemic, both ringingly clear in its aesthetic and theoretical explications and simply thrilling to read. I learn so much from the way Lee Edelman grounds a queer ethics and politics outside kinship and reproductive circuits, those spaces of assimilation that use the bribe of futurity to distract us from the ongoing work of social violence and death.”—Lauren Berlant, author of The Queen of America Goes to Washington City: Essays on Sex and Citizenship“In consistently brilliant theoretical discussions (for the most part, psychoanalytically inspired), as well as in strikingly original readings of Dickens, George Eliot, and Hitchcock, Lee Edelman argues that in a political culture dominated by the sentimental illusions and frequently murderous moral imperatives of ‘reproductive futurism,’ homosexuality has been assigned—and should deliberately and defiantly take on—the burden of a negativity at once embedded within and violently disavowed by that culture. The paradoxical dignity of queerness would be its refusal to believe in a redemptive future, its embrace of the unintelligibility, even the inhumanity inherent in sexuality. Edelman’s extraordinary text is so powerful that we could perhaps reproach him only for not spelling out the mode in which we might survive our necessary assent to his argument.”—Leo Bersani, author of The Culture of Redemption, Homos, and, with Ulysse Dutoit, Caravaggio’s Secrets“No Future is a highly imaginative, terrifically suggestive, and altogether powerful book. The question at its political heart is an arresting one, not least because it appears so counterintuitive: Must every political vision be a vision of the future? This is the first study I know that submits the rhetoric of futurity itself to close scrutiny. An intellectually thrilling book.”—Diana Fuss, author of The Sense of an Interior: Four Writers and the Rooms that Shaped Them“Edelman has certainly articulated a new direction for queer theory, making No Future required reading both within the field and beyond.” (Andrea Fontenot Modern Fiction Studies)“The book represents a rigorous attempt to think at once generatively and against tropes of generation, to work at once in irony and in earnest to demonstrate the political’s material dependence on Symbolic homo-logy.” (Carolyn Denver Victorian Studies)

I read this in two days. I couldn't put it down. Blew my mind and I have been trying to integrate it into my thesis. Amazing.

This is a smart, funny, and challenging book. (It does require fluency in theory-speak, largely of the Lacan dialect. So Edelman is writing largely for academics of a certain ilk. Fair enough, but I wonder what these ideas would look like if they were written with a larger public in mind--it seems to me Edelman's challenge to the child-driven purity politics of the US will never reach those who operate most within its languages and symbols.)Edelman makes a compelling case for refusing the "futurity" built into the rhetoric not just of conservative politics but also much of liberal or progressive politics. He acknowledges that in calling for this refusal, he is proposing an "impossible politics," a politics that will sidestep the trap by which one or another group (queers or an equivalent population deemed deviant) has to be sold down the river in order to rally everyone else around future improvement and greater inclusion. This is also an "impossible politics" because it won't suppress the death drive that structures every identity or political vision (this is the Lacanian part of the argument). But once you stipulate that any and every kind of politics (except Edelman's impossible politics) is built on suppressing the death drive, you have painted yourself into a corner--an impossible politics, indeed. Once Edelman has shifted the site of politics to the deep structure of the human psyche in this way, It's hard to see how one could think or act in any purposeful way that might count as political. There is only the act of refusing, but no hope or even historical possibility for imagining social and power arrangements that operate otherwise. In the meantime, political change will happen, for better or worse, and those who refuse have just taken themselves out of the game, and also limited their ability to even diagnose the change that happens. What is missing is any speculation from Edelman about what his politics of refusal would amount to, how it might play out in the world to affirm rather than suppress or deny the death drive. Other theorists have taken up the challenge of thinking about how we might act or at least think politically once we give up the idea of a self-directing political actor and a self-governing political society. But Edelman seems content to plant himself at the paradox of an "impossible politics" and expose the delusions and ill will that suddenly come into view from that standpoint. The book is brave and often brilliant, but I find I want to refuse the impossibility of this picture of impossible politics.

Awesome thoughts from a brilliant mind...but it gets a little repetitive. This really shakes the fabric of social structuring around the our precious constructions of the child.

Author is widely respected though his argument fails to impress. It feels heavily married to Lacanian structures of thought, which have been taken up by an array of authors. He puts significant work into defining "the Child" as a Symbolic projection, yet his strongest cultural examples talk about actual children (not just the idea of the Child).Overall, his argument is a great example of highlighting the limits of Lacanian logic. Beyond that stylistic inquiry, we're left with an unsubstantial exploration of "straight time" vs "queer time" and a polemic reading of American politics.

fascinating

It might seem harsh to say that the problem with Lee Edelman's account of queer theory is that there's no future in it, but according to its own logic this would be highest praise. Edelman's title says it literally and succinctly: "No Future." And as the back-cover publisher's blurb tells it, queer theory is also "a fairly recent academic discipline." If I read this statement correctly, it means that in addition to having "no future," queer theory also has "no past." Leo Bersani, himself a distinguished academic with a past, a present and a future, writes in his blurb: "The paradoxical dignity of queerness would be its refusal to believe in a redemptive future, its embrace of the unintelligibility, even the inhumanity inherent in sexuality." It is true that the ancient Gnostics renounced sexuality as a way to subvert the demiurge ("an artisan-like figure responsible for the fashioning and maintenance of the physical universe") and to guarantee themselves: No Future. Might their "demiurge" equate to the neoliberal proponents of heteronormative pronatalism--child-lovers--so compellingly denounced by Edelman? Fortunately, however, I believe there is at least one kind of future for the most excellent queer theorists, or at least for the radically subversive, pro-unintelligibility (-ist?) Lee Edelman: a tenured position in Gnostic academe.

A supercilious, elitist, pseudo-intellectual with not much to say.
