Grasses of Remembrance, the second volume of Edwin Cranston’s monumental Waka Anthology, carries forward the story of Japanese court poetry through its Early Classical period, drawing from sources dating from the 890s to the 1080s. These two centuries saw the revival of the prestige of poetry in the native tongue after a century of official preference for versification in Chinese. An anthology of anthologies, Grasses of Remembrance draws copiously from the first four imperially ordered collections, Kokinshu, Gosenshu, Shuishu, and Goshuishu, examining the structure and illustrating the content of each. In all, the book contains over 2,600 poems in lively and readable translation, including selections from Shinsen Man'yoshu, a late-ninth-century collection of parallel verses in Chinese and Japanese, and all 795 poems from The Tale of Genji.

The first book was wonderful. The commentary on the poems brought them so alive. Edwin manages to squeeze every little detail out of what otherwise, especially in the longer poems, the normal reader would have missed totally. So I looked so forward to buying this the second in the series, and wow, was I rewarded.The wonderful thing about Waka is that each person translates it in a different way, sometimes changing the emphasis of the poem its self. One translation can be "Off she went, trailing a long red skirt behind her..." while another translation can be "The glimpse of a lady in a carriage, wearing long crimson robes, before she left..." Now to me, the first one with 'Off she went' suggests maybe even a quarrel, a lover's row, while the second one is more of the longing for an unknown lady half seen in a carriage.And it here that Edwin comes of age. The first book had wonderful explanations, but for me the poems lacked the passion, the heart. The translation were good, far beyond workman like, but the spark was slightly missed. In the 'Grasses of Remembrance', Edwin gives us some masterpieces of translations, poems you will want to read and read again. A control of the language that Shakesphere would have understood. These are not just translations anymore, but poems that come in to their own, that stand side by side with the originals. Even compared to Helen Craig McCullough's 'Kokin Wakashu', (surely the last word on translation of Waka), Edwin's book surpasses it. The sheer beauty of his turn of phase, the sheer love that he invests in each line. After two pages you stop, take stock, wind down, and that start either the next page or re-read them. It's almost like some graphically intense pop video, instead of images assaulting your senses, here it is words, and the assault is beautiful, ravishing even.A new standard for others to try and follow.
