Revolutionary!! I have read this over the years. I have given this book to people who have faced abuse from sinful people who attend church. I have seen the Lord use this book many times to bring healing in the hearts of people.It should be titled, "From Legalism to Grace" :-)

Freedom in Christ is the only true freedom there is. Many search for it in fleshly realms or think if they could just be perfect they would be deserving. Neither of those leads to freedom, but disappointment and many brick walls. This book leads you down the path and places mirrors along the way for you to examine Gods grace for you and your grace for others. Did this book one chapter at a time with my best friend who moved states away and we grew together as the Lord revealed His grace through the pages.

I have always loved Chuck's teaching - I find him approachable yet theologically sound and this book is my new favorite of his. He compels the reader towards a new way of looking at grace;both by the gift that it is and by the "offensiveness" of it. I loved this book and his careful examination of the topic, as well as the human soul's thirst for God's mercy.

First, I could mention that my normal reading is along the lines of R.C. Sproul, Francis Schaeffer, John Piper, etc. So I'm used to pretty dense, challenging, "meaty" content. So with that qualification I suppose it should come as no surprise that I found Swindoll's light, vernacular style frustrating. Like others who have reviewed this book, the lack of depth, practical guidance, and clear scripture exposition was annoying. In general, this book reads more like a "Daily Bread" devotional than a treatise on grace from a multi-credentialed pastor and former university chancellor.That said, the content here is good especially for those who skew toward legalism and a lack of compassion due to temperament or bad teaching from well meaning but misguided Christian leaders. I'm going to recommend this book to new Christians trying to understand the biblical doctrine of grace and old Christians who prefer lighter fare who have fallen into legalism. However, for anyone looking for a deeper, meater, more fully rounded treatise on the subject I'm going to refer them to R.C. Sproul's Grace Grace Unknown: The Heart of Reformed Theology or John Piper's Future Grace, Revised Edition: The Purifying Power of the Promises of God on the subject instead.Bottom line: If you're looking for depth, look elsewhere. If you're looking for poignant stories, anecdotes, and a good conceptual overview of the biblical doctrine of grace you've found your book.3.5 Stars

This book deserves 5 stars because of the beautiful message of our freedom through the unselfish gift given to us by God when His Son, Jesus, died on the cross for our sins. Grace is given to us, not because we deserve it but because of Christ Jesus' love for all of God's children. At the end of 2012, GRACE was the word I chose for my journey through this year. In January, Chuck began an 18-week radio broadcast of this book. I downloaded all the broadcasts from his website Insight for Living. They are based on the book. With the broadcasts to listen to & the book to re-read, I will learn to walk in 'freedom' throughout the rest of my life. I pray that you will accept Jesus into your life & experience the freedom of GRACE. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

This book gets straight to the heart of the matter as to why I struggle as a Christian. Selfish pride, legalistic attitudes, being a people pleaser, among many wrongful attitudes I have. The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Perhaps, at least this historians version, and to me it seemed right. It is more what I would have imagined him to be like, than the Hollywood rendition. He lived in hard times, under bad and contrary rulers, often murderous and corrupt ones. The character here is not particularly likable but he was a man of his times and certainly interesting, and to use a phrase I do not particularly like 'larger than life'. A good book and a good read.

Limited actual history of El Cid. Far more detail than needed on the cultural and political issues of the age of El Cid and Spain. Found the reading to be dull and boring.

I have quite a few historical books on this period and I must say that to date this has been the best book on Rodrigo de Bivar that I have read. Lots of good details, not just on the man himself but also on those around him as well as descriptive details on the times and customs. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is essentially two biographies in one. First is a biography of El Cid’s life based on contemporary-ish sources, while separating fact from fiction in later sources. Second is a biography of El Cid’s myth, examining how his story evolved into legend over the centuries and is still evolving today. In effect El Cid became a Spanish version of King Arthur: a person based in some amount of reality but mostly a literary creation. The 1961 Charlton Heston movie El Cid (back when epics were truly epic) is frequently mentioned in the book as almost the pinnacle of the myth, even creating new material for it. I wasn’t looking for it but happened to find a library copy of this movie while reading the book, and thus got more out of the book than otherwise. Best to view it between reading these two biographies.Both biographies are excellent, with careful and comprehensive scholarship. If for you like me, El Cid is somebody you’ve vaguely heard of and want to know more about, this is definitely the book for you! If for you like me, truth is important to you and you’re tired of conspiracy theories/hoaxes yet can’t help wondering just how it is they come into being, again this is definitely the book for you!However, the book terribly, sorely, dreadfully needs a proofreader! Mostly for many places where both original text and revised text inhabit the same sentence. Five-star scholarship, two-star editing.

The narrative is VERY dry and goes mostly into the background of the ere. Not much is given to the telling of the life of this great man. If you expect a stirring historical novel of the sort that Collen McCollough writes then you will be disappointed.

A beautiful and heartfelt musical. If you liked the musical, this is a great addition to your library. A wonderful behind the scenes look into the musical with beautiful pictures of the cast and the full libretto included. Made me feel I was at the musical all over again. Definitely worth it for all musical fans!

Never Ever Ever has Broadway presented a play like this that reaches out to a "very specific" audience that turns out to touch everyone in the world! The dialogue on the subject matter is spot on. Excellent writing! The music will reduce you to tears, male or female, young or old. Excellent composers with SUCH HEART and understanding. I am Jennifer Laura Thompson's sister, Laura Thompson Cerrito. It's no coincidence that we have a play on our names! She plays Connor's mom. I may be biased but this play dropped my jaw, broke me to tears and made me wake up to the real world that our children live in. Whether you choose audio or coffee table book (kindle too) You will be overwhelmed with the subject/contents. Thank you Steven Levenson /Justin Paul /Benj Pasek and the entire cast. You blew my mind and my heart exploded!!!!

I purchased this for my theatre loving daughter.She loves it. She can't stop pouring herself over it.I only have one wish..is that it came with a clear dust cover for it.It already is showing some smudges on theall white canvas cover. Other than that...she is in LOVE with it.Now to find Ben Platt to sign it for her ;)

Bought this book as a gift for my Girlfriend as kind of a last minute gift expecting it to be a basic musical book, but it is so much more than that. A full script detailing every scene, beautiful photos of the cast and the staging, and a wonderful gift for anyone who loves this show.

If you’re like me and couldn’t get tickets to see this on Broadway, this will help to satiate your disappointment until the tour comes to your town.Do yourself favor: grab a box of tissues, some water and your iPhone and lock yourself in your room with this book for a few hours. The book contains the entire libretto (script) of the show with amazing footnotes by the creative team. Read through and let Siri play you through this beautiful, important, and cathartic piece!

Purchased this book used, and it was definitely an old (?) library book, which is fine. I question why this book, which is pretty new, is being taken from a library already!! Lol, but I’m happy with it. Shipping was fast. Few marks here and there outside, I was able to remove the outer stickers and the inside looks as if no one even flipped through it (sad). Beautiful book. Beautiful show.

If you loved the broadway musical, you will LOVE this book. It's the whole script -- the words, the lyrics, complete with awesome photography. Best part is the "commentary" on each page, giving awesome insight to what Levenson, Pasek & Paul were thinking as they play came together and evolved. I pick it up daily. It's a beautiful book!

With its Oklahoma setting, there are plenty of moments that showcase small-town life and numerous friendly residents. When it comes to the romance in the story, there are ups and downs which drew me into the lives of two people who deserve some happiness. Their path to a joyous future is portrayed with realistic circumstances and lots of conflicted emotions.The decision made by Dr. Paxton Samuels to take a leave of absence from his career at a clinic in Boston would hopefully give him some peace of mind after a recent stressful incident. While not working at his current place of employment, his skills will be useful in an Oklahoma town which presently has no doctor. His first task for the community arises even before he gets to his destination, and it concerns an accident plus Lauren Wilson, the only nurse in the area. As Paxton and Lauren get to know one another during the short time he is in Last Stop, their feelings become unexpectedly involved.It was entertaining to watch Paxton be introduced to life in a town with no stoplight. Since I live in a place not much bigger than the rural community in the story, it was fun seeing his reactions to how things were done. The charm of Last Stop was very appealing, as it is a place where folks care about one another. Their pleasure during the holidays was also evident in how the town celebrated as a group. One of the medical emergencies in the story was truly heart-pounding, as Susan Carlisle depicted the situation with much realism, causing me to worry about the outcome.Though Paxton was raised in Boston and lived amongst the rich, he has compassion for his patients, and this fact had me admiring him from the start. I also liked how Lauren let her opinion of him be directed by his actions. How this couple reacted to one another, regardless of the situation, was always convincing. They are honest and sincere with each other, and the times when her young son was with them often put a smile on my face. This book is AMAZING! There's definitely a shortage of prehistory books for children and this is one of the best! The pictures in the book are just STUNNING and the words to go along are perfect for an elementary grade level. It really breaks down the topics of The Big Bang and evolution to the level of a child. If you only buy one prehistory child's book, THIS IS THE ONE!

I've been reading this with my 5 year old. He doesn't get everything but he still enjoys it enough that he keeps asking to read more. It may be best for and older child but when your 5 year old asks how humans came along you have to start somewhere.

Illustrations are outstanding and I like the time frames which accompany each photo and explanation. It is hard to imagine the amount of time between each evolutionary change. Though I bought this for my 9 year old grandson, it blows my mind and I am an adult.

My 4 1/2 year old loves this book. Objectively, I would recommend this book for kids starting at around age 8 or so. My little guy happens to be extremely interested in this topic so he hangs with me when I read it with him. He has requested this books several times since it arrived. There is a decent amount of text on each page. The explanations are kept simple and include a nice amount of detail.

This is about as good as it gets for explaining these things to a child at the level for which this is written. It can still be slightly challenging, nonetheless, but I don't think it is really possible to make it any simpler without oversimplifying. The presentation is excellent.

I know it is geared for children, but I found it very informative and interesting. I love the common sense approach. Very attractively done, and I love the method--"how WE looked 590 million years ago, etc." A companion piece or work to Richard Dawlkins iPad app "Magic of Reality".

Amazing! The artwork is beautiful, the writing is wonderful especially the use of the word we, and so much information. Love it!

Great book. My son asks a lot of good questions and I wanted him to get good answers. Beautiful illustrations, clear, concise explanations. I learned quite a bit reading it to him. Would recommend to any parents that can use help explaining the science behind evolution.

I finished this magnificent, life-changing book 1/2 hour ago, and I hope to read it again soon. Powers takes on the single most important topic of our time: the effects of humans on the planet and the possibility of a future. Through 9 varied characters, he brings to life the old forests, the lives of individual trees, the quest for AI, and the love people are capable of, among other themes. It's a tour de force of creation and, at 500 pages, it could have gone on forever and I would have been happy. It will also break your heart, but it's not completely without hope. Highest recommendation.

When looking for a literary analogue, The Overstory is almost something of a Dostoevskian novel. The themes are different of course—-Powers is not interested in discussing God or the basis of morality—but one does get the sense in reading the Overstory that the plot, characters and various literary devices are all at the service of the author’s philosophical vision. And by philosophical I don’t mean esoteric fine points of metaphysics but the larger question of the future of life on earth—in both Powers and Dostoevsky there is almost a return to the themes of ancient apocalyptic writings.While Powers certainly doesn’t need authentication of his narrative power—he has already won a National Book Award among many literary prizes—I can vouchsafe that he is an excellent storyteller. Similarly, his ability to create characters that may stretch the bounds of believability but still generate passionate sympathetic feelings in the reader is also beyond doubt.Thus, I found myself reading the Overstory with every free moment I had over two days and loving nearly every page.The overarching philosophy of the work is that human beings, either willfully or not, do not understand the amount of destruction they are causing to the world’s flora. Plants and trees, one of the oldest of the earth’s kingdoms, are only now beginning to be understood as beings that communicate, learn and in some instances even care for their own offspring. The human caused biocide of the world’s flora is a tragedy not only because these trees may have medicinal or other useful properties for humans but also because each one is a beautiful product of nature fashioned over millions of years. In the author’s view, we seem to be destroying some of the most important parts of creation, so that everyone can, so to speak, have a bigger projection screen TV.Nor are biofuels, renewable energy or other technological fixes likely to stem this downward spiral. Even virtual reality is only going to be as interesting as the humans who create it and so cannot be a genuine substitute for the complexity of what nature provides for us gratis in the real world.The author seems to envision only two scenarios: either humankind will wipe itself out and the earth will generate new, unforeseeable solutions to life or artificial intelligence will impose a solution on a humanity which cannot save itself.To those who have read optimistic works like Steven Pinker’s Enlightenment Now or related perspectives such environmental pessimism is somewhat startling. I can’t say that I am fully persuaded by Powers’ perspective but I can appreciate the accuracy of his science, the literary craftsmanship that went into embodying these ideas and the importance of his overall message.So, if you are willing to endure a literary punch to the stomach and put on apocalyptic glasses then you will thoroughly enjoy The Overstory. But, though a love of trees thoroughly permeates the book, it is hardly a walk in the park.

A wise, deep, moving epic by an exceptional writer. I was totally entranced. There are fabulous stand-alone set pieces, engaging characters, glorious prose and a soul-stirring look into the inner lives of trees. It’s one of a handful of books of which I can say I was a different person when I finished it. Bravo, Mr. Powers. This may very well be your masterpiece.

The first chapter alone is worth the price of entry -- if it were a stand-alone short story, it would be the best short story I've ever read. I have read a number of this author's works, and mostly enjoyed them, but there was always something missing. This book has it all.

How have I lived and read this long and not known of Richard Powers? What a writer and what a book.If I were still in my 20s or even 30s I would be buying copies of this book and thrusting them all on my friends and telling them it is a must read. Now that I'm considerably older than that, I'm not so naive. You have to come to it of your own. The trees themselves will call you do it, just as in the book.Of course, it's a clarion call to our species to stop wreaking havoc on the earth and all its species, including our own. And, of course, it is a cry in the dark. We will destroy ourselves and then the planet can begin to recover. It's happened many times during the earth's long history and will happen many times again. Too bad for us. Let's hope some of those magnificent giants out live us to help heal earth after we have destroyed it.Nevertheless, read this book and try to change the "live only for today and the next dollar" ethos.

I'm half way through it and I am finding it very hard to put down. This differs from his other novels in its accessibility to the average reader- I hope it will bring him the popularity he so richly deserves. This is an immensely readable novel- he seems to have improved his ability to communicate his rather esoteric ideas to an audience that is not necessarily well versed in science and/or music. His characters are well drawn and compelling- I find myself thinking about them often, and not wanting to end the book, because I will miss all of them. It is a uniquely American novel in many ways, and yet, of course, its themes are universal. Powers writes a lot about the connections between art and science; this more than most of his books, is about humans and our connection to nature. It's a common subject, and yet he gives it his own special twist. It's his most accessible novel since In The Time Of Our Singing. I have to say that the phrase "Great American Novel" keeps coming to me- I'm not sure if I am being hyperbolic.
